Title: Tips for 1/2 subjects in Year 10 :)
Post by: geminii on November 17, 2014, 10:42:22 am
Hey everyone!
So some of us are starting Year 10 next year and being thrown in the deep end - I personally have to complete three Unit 1/2 subjects next year and have absolutely no idea how to start preparing! I was hoping this could help me - and all you soon to be Year 10's out there!
Thanks!  ;)

Just actually pay attention in class basically! Make sure you listen, understand everything and do all the homework! If you don't mind me asking, what subjects are you doing?
Good luck :)

Oh wow, physics! Our school doesn't allow us to do physics in year 10!

Doing a 1/2 prior to year 11 is a really good opportunity to try out various study techniques to see what works for you. :) If I could off you any advice off the bat, it would be to complete all of the prescribed holiday homework. Also, be aware that the 'step up' from previous years can be quite confronting for some at first but just be aware that everyone has been there and survived.

Basically this.

Whether or not you feel the jump from yr 10 to 11 is solely dependent on you as an individual. I felt it but a lot of my friends really didn't.
As for study tips the best thing I can advise is to learn to love your subject(s), at the end of the day in yr 12 it's passion which is going to fuel dedication and hardwork, get a  feel for how how much work you need to do to score well and just generally enjoy the thrill of learning something new. Yr 10 is one of the first years where you can begin to prioritise the stuff you're interested in/care about so revel in the joy of that; focus in all your classes, try different study techniques and enjoy your work.
Good luck for next year! :)

In addition to it being a good way to experiment with study techniques, it also gives you an idea of the difficulty that a subject may bring. Of course, Unit 1 and 2 subjects are basically samples of the Unit 3/4 equivalent, so you can chop and change for the 3/4 subjects accordingly.

I've never been fond of strict study timetables because events can change the schedule and therefore knock the timetable out of whack. What I would say though is, complete all your work in a suitable timeframe. For example, if you receive an assignment and it's due in 2 weeks, don't leave it until the last 2-3 days to do it. I know many people love to procrastinate which is why I've included this.

Don't feel stressed though because for Unit 1/2 subjects, a pass is all that is required. I would suggest to absorb the information and make summarised notes. Write detailed notes for topics which you find difficult to grasp.

Take advantage of your teachers too. They are paid to help you, so ensure you ask PLENTY of questions.

In terms of the option on the poll 'Complete all set homework on the day it is given out'... If you have no other homework, then sure if you want to do this, that's fine. But I would suggest that if you have multiple pieces of work to do, you prioritise.

Finally, leave room for leisure. You'll go mental if you study study study.
