Title: Become an ATAR Notes Moderator! (Applications/Nominations)
Post by: jamonwindeyer on June 26, 2017, 03:28:11 pm
We are looking for our next set of amazing state moderators!
Interested in applying? Click here!

The ATAR Notes Moderator Team are what keeps the site moving smoothly. They facilitate discussion, keep things organised, contribute content, and just generally make the forums a better place for everyone. Being a moderator is an amazing opportunity to help steer AN in cool new directions, it looks great on resumes, and you'll get access to sections of the forums no one else can see (it is mostly just lots of banter).

What are the Criteria? There are no hard criteria for becoming a moderator, but we'd expect users to have an established history of contributions and helpful posts on the forums (particularly in the area they want to moderate), and be able to continue this into the future. You should be able to bring ideas for improving the forums and be able to help make those ideas a reality.

You do not need to have graduated to be a moderator, and you do not need to be a genius in your subject area to be a moderator! :)

What are the Responsibilities? State moderators should be doing two things. First, they need to be keeping their section(s) of the forums clean and organised. Getting rid of spam, ensuring that all new topics are in the right place, making sure that resources are organised with mega-threads if required – Etc, etc.

Secondly, and definitely more importantly, moderators need to be promoting the positive culture of ATAR Notes, making their section a better place. This is totally up to interpretation, but a few awesome things that State mods have done that meet this description perfectly:

- Legal Studies Exam Question Competition – An awesome thread where students post responses to exam questions, and get marked, earning points along the way! Even standard essay marking threads like this are awesome.

- This Week in Chemistry – A news thread where news stories are shared to promote wider understanding of the topic area.

- Essay marking threads like this one started in HSC Business Studies.

Guides on content, studying, skills – Pretty much anything content related, like the ones here and here, are also amazing.

Do you need to be writing a guide a week or hosting a huge competition 100% of the time? Absolutely not, but the most effective state moderators will be doing things like this, even just on occasion. At the basic level, we expect state moderators to be encouraging questions and/or responding to questions in their relevant section. In general, just create good vibes – It goes a long way to making this site the amazing community it is :)

How Many Moderators Will We Choose? We don't have a threshold we want or need to meet. It will depend on the applicants, the sections they are passionate about moderating, and where we feel people will be able to contribute the most :)

Know someone who would be perfect? Give them a shout out below!! It might encourage them to put their name forward. We'd hate for a deserving member of the community not to apply because they feel intimidated by the process.

If you are sitting on the fence thinking, "I don't know whether i'd do a good job" or "I don't know whether i'd be a good fit", take the leap and apply anyway. We'd love to hear from everyone. A diverse range of experiences and backgrounds is so important for any team.

Plus... who wouldn't want access to the mod section?  :P

You should apply! You've made some awesome contributions this year, you are definitely the sort of user who we have in mind :)

This should re-enforce for people reading - I know there are current Year 12's reading this who don't think they meet the criteria for mod. Totally not true. This is about participation and good vibes, not content knowledge (though you might have a heap of that too) ;D

Food for thought: Of the new NSW state moderators last year, I was the only one that was at uni already. All of the rest were in their HSC year.

Just out of curiosity.

Is one able to be requested to be de-modded at any point in time? Eg, they lose interest in the forum. Whilst I don't feel like I would be somebody who would abandon this community straight after HSC (you guys are too nice ;) ) I can see people who may. Are there any other conditions for de-modding? Bar any inappropriate behavior or breach of rules.

Just a thought~

You can voluntarily step down if life gets too overwhelming and you really feel you can't fulfil your moderator duties.

The rest probably won't be disclosed until you actually are a moderator.

That seems reasonable enough.

Being a moderator isn't like having a job, it's not like we're checking your clock in and clock out times. If in the future you have other priorities and you don't end up having time for AN anymore, you tell us and that's cool :) we'd prefer that scenario than having you vanish without warning and wondering where you went ;)

 Hey

I was wondering what is the role of an AN moderator for the forum. What tasks and duties would they be assigned to? I feel as if this is an amazing opportunity but do doubt myself a tad if I'm good enough for the role.

Thanks a bunch!  :D :D :D

Hi kiiaaa,

The role of a state moderator is quite simple -> to take care of and contribute to their assigned section. Each state moderator on ATAR Notes is given 1 or more sections of the forum to look after. They would be required to:

a) contribute and maintain an active presence
b) take action on posts/threads where necessary -> move threads, close threads that get out of control, merging of double posts.. things like that.
c) update resource + other stickied threads.. so ideally someone with up-to-date knowledge in the subject board/area they are interested in being a mod for.

For new moderators who aren't familiar with SMF (our forum software) moderation actions and so forth - we will assist you with getting used to these.

For those interested: Please make sure you read the first post by Jamon. It is really important you understand what it involves :)

That's as simple as I can go really :) Have a go if you're interested.

If there are any other queries about what being a mod involves, feel free to post here and one of us will respond to you.

Hi friends  :)
I would like to nominate Swagadaktal. Although his humour is a bit bland and he still dabs, he has defs made a significant contribution to AN in the past few years + very approachable.
