An overview of the AN AMA series can be found here
Instalment #1 of the series with Orb can be found here
Instalment #2 of the series with vox nihili can be found here

Welcome to the third instalment of ATAR Notes' Ask Me Anything series! How does it work? Basically, each week (roughly), you'll have the opportunity to ask a different user whatever you want! School-related, uni-related, favourite-Bachelor-contestant-related, life-related, sport-related, *whatever-you-want*-related. The potential benefits are many, the potential downfalls are few.

Next up we have (pretend it's not in the thread title)...

My early pick for the AN MVP 2016! More:

Quote from: jamonwindeyer
Hey! My name's Jamon, I'm a second year Electrical Engineering Student at UNSW! Beyond the obvious circuit stuff,  I've done a whole bunch of math and physics at university, and a LOT of coding (really want to actually use it for something interesting outside my degree one of these days). I work as a private tutor as well as doing lecturing/content marketing for ATAR Notes ;D I'm into everything technological and I spend way too much time on Youtube. At school I did a pretty weird mix of subjects: English, Math, Legal Studies, Physics, Music and Studies of Religion. Not much for sport, but I'll watch League if it's on (League > AFL, sorry Melbournians). Oh, and of course, love long walks on the beach. That's super important :)

So, over to you! :) Try not to flame him *too* much for not being Victorian.

Hey - thanks for doing this, despite not being from NSWlucky me , I always see you pop up to help people on the forums.

Anyway, what is your favourite thing to watch on YouTube, and what's the worst thing you've stumbled onto on YouTube?

Hey! Thanks for saying so ;D

Hmm, I suppose it depends what I'm in the mood for. If I need something mindless in the background/corner, I don't mind some gaming videos (NerdCubed probably being my favourite). I keep up with all the tech news with CNET, and call me a nerd, but I do love V-Sauce ;D besides that any music/news etc that tickles my fancy.

I've stumbled on some weird/bad stuff, but what took me most by surprise was probably Happy Tree Friends (WARNING: Cartoon violence). It escalates very quickly... Probably not the worst thing, but the most unexpected thing :P

Is it hard living in Australia's second most liveable city?

I even live 1.5 hours away from Australia's second most liveable city, so downgrade me further ;)

Sydney is great though, in different ways than Melbourne I think (only been to Melbourne twice, seems way more chill...)

Jamon, you achieved a near-perfect ATAR despite living in basically rural West Sydney and going to a low-tier school, and you've spoken before about how volunteers of the Law/Med faculties would become disinterested in you at uni Open Days after hearing where you were from... Can you talk a little bit about any self-doubts you may or may not have experienced through Year 12 and what it was like for you aiming so high despite having the 'odds' seemingly stacked against you?

What advice do you have for people in a similar situation who may be experiencing some of the things you did?

Yeah, that was a pretty big turning point for me motivationally to be honest. Like, it's the moment I really got my butt into gear.

So I remember I went to a Careers Market thing, and at this stage I was loosely set on Engineering, but was considering other options, so I talked to everyone, specifically Law and Medicine (probably leaning more to Law out of the two). I was talking to people about options in those courses, and eventually in the flow of conversation would come, "Oh, where you from? What school?" And I'd say my school and that I lived way out West...

Well God, you'd think I'd contracted leprosy on the spot or something.

Immediately, conversation shifted, they would be like:

"Oh, we have a great Arts program, and you can specialise in Criminal Law there (or something)"
"Oh, you can do a pathways program to get in."

Or one person (was definitely a student) flat out said (and this is what did it):

"You might want to look at Arts instead, I don't think you'll get an ATAR that high, it's pretty hard."

I was like, seriously? Granted that student was an idiot and most people were more subtle, but the fact remained; no-one expected me to do well coming from Western Sydney. This was really depressing to me, and I did doubt myself afterwards for a fair bit. I was confused, like, I didn't feel limited (and I would never say I was disadvantaged), I felt like I was doing really well. Why could I not do well, it seemed absurd?

I realised pretty quick that it seemed absurd, because it was. And it made me even more determined to get a really high ATAR and rub it in to everyone who said that I couldn't. Because screw them! Why should where you are from or the school you attend or the money you make, make any difference to your potential?

I come from an area where there was virtually no additional help available for students who needed it. I was lucky in that I had amazing teachers who would always go the extra mile to help their students, I would never have traded my school for anything. But some people need the extra help, and there were very few tutors (to my knowledge), no tutoring centres; nothing of the sort. Why? Again, because the stigma exists that academic drive stops at Blacktown, which is utter crap to be honest. Every student should have the tools to excel.

Whew, okay, ranting over...

To anyone who is feels like there is a ceiling above their heads that restricts how high they can jump (be that cultural, economic, social, etc): That is bull. It is a construct of the prejudices of others and has absolutely no bearing on your individual success.

To anyone who feels like they don't have access to the resources they need to succeed, well, that's what sites like this are for. It's why I work for ATAR Notes in the first place. Like, the prices you can pay for notes/help in NSW is disgustingly criminal. I'm happy that I can help be part of something like ATAR Notes, because I know that resources like we provide could be the big difference for someone who wouldn't otherwise have access to the tools they want and need.

Don't spend your last year of high school conforming to the expectations of others, or thinking "I can't get those marks because XYZ." It is your efforts and your hard work that define you, and absolutely nothing else  :)

Hmmm: I do regret not taking Maths Extension 2, it would have made 1st Year of Uni way easier, but then I wouldn't have wanted to drop any of my subjects, so maybe not?

I regret not exercising more during my HSC too (put on a decent amount of weight)  ;)

Hmm, these are all NOTS... Oh! I do regret going to my Year 12 Formal and staying up until 4am the morning of a scholarship interview (not the one I eventually got, but another). That was... Not the smartest move ;)

The idea that you live in a place less chill than Melbourne seriously frightens me, mate. Melbourne's nuts. (I'm not from the capital either).

You've spent a lot of time around these fora, and presumably along the way have learned a little bit about VCE, what's the weirdest thing about it compared to HSC?

Also, what does HSC have that you're surprised VCE does not?

These aren't phrased well, but you're a pretty smart guy so I'm relying on you to make those questions look less shitly said with a good answer :p

The weird thing is how you guys arrange your Year 11/Year 12 subjects. Like, you do certain subjects in Y11, then others in Y12, or something. That just doesn't happen in the HSC, you pick in Year 11, and you don't ever add stuff (very rare), though you can drop units. Very strange :P

You guys have Psychology though! That's awesome ;D I'd say you have better subject choices overall actually :)

I don't think the HSC has anything that VCE doesn't to be honest! It just seems... Strange :P

How was your day today? :)

Busy! Woke up at 5:30am to get on the road by 6:00 (2 hours to Uni in the Sydney traffic), at Uni from 9:00am-9:00 pm, only got home 20 minutes ago ;) but very productive thanks! ;)

As someone who can't look at Ohm's law without getting palpitations, I commend you on choosing electrical engineering! Why that over the other streams?

And it only goes downhill from there ;)

To be honest, I was leaning more towards Civil initially. But I went to a Civil Engineering lecture at UTS Open Day and was bored senseless (nothing against anyone, not my thing). I walked out of the room and Electrical Engineering was in the lecture theatre next door. Rest is history ;)

I'd considered Electrical before then of course, but I never really know what it was about! That lecture showed me just how broad it was, just how much you could do with it, which was really attractive to me. I'm really into my Math, which helps immensely with some of the disgusting things I'm asked to do for some of these subjects. Plus, I've always been into my technology. Once I'd made the decision to go to Electrical, it just seemed very natural. Should have been my aim from the get go ;D

Perhaps it is an electrifying experience?  ;)

Here's a few more questions for you, Jamon.
1. What's your best study tip, particularly for younger students?
2. What's your favourite motivational quote?
3. Would you rather live in the ocean or live in the sky, if both were habitable and just as equally accessible?

1. Practice, Practice, Practice. It's boring, but it works ;) also, record video lessons after big sections of content (or whatever), then watch them back for revision! Who better to teach you, then yourself? ;)

2. Succesful people don't try to succeed. They work hard and then succeed on purpose.

Or alternatively, for a chuckle, this gem supposedly from Einstein:

Two things are infinite: The universe and human stupidity. And I'm not sure about the universe.

3. I would definitely much prefer to live in the sky. The oceans got some pretty messed up stuff ;)

Jamon, do you have any advice for students struggling to stay motivated toward the back end of their VCE/HSC?

I'd say to keep some specific goals in mind. ATAR goals, degree goals. Even just mini personal goals, either immediate (EG - I'm going to do a past paper this morning) or long term (I want to do every Math past paper from this decade before the exam). The point being, give yourself specific targets and goals to meet and achieve. If you lacking motivation, you can't just fly "on a whim," you need to have achievable tasks and reasons that you want to achieve them.

Having a long term goal is best to keep yourself feeling optimistic. Many people would have degree goals by now, do some research into those degrees! Go to Open Days! Immerse yourself, and remind yourself why you are still doing the HSC in the first place. Everyone has a reason, find yours ;D

First off VCE students you are so lucky you can do pyschology in Yr 11/12.

Secondly, I would just like to ask you how much time did you actually spend studying? Be honest, and take the hour/s of "books out but on youtube" procrastination please.
Also where did you study, how did you do it, and did you make it fun or was it horrible but you just suffered through it. As a HSC student (soooo much better than Melbourne lol- would prefer not to have 4 seasons in one day) i would like to know these!

Thanks for the help!

I didnt know your HSC backstory, but thats so 'cool' (for lack of a better word right now) that you smashed the HSC despite the """"disadvantages"""" and people being little shits when you talked to them. Your ATAR was so good, and you managed to rank in the state for legal, i had just assumed you went to the school that ranked pretty high. I now get why you're so quick to bust any school rank rumours  :)
i wish that you had been able to personally rub your atar in that stuents nose (because im petty like that hahaha)

Anyway, Formal is getting closer, and i wanted to know how yours was? Did you take a date? Did your tie match her dress? hahaha

Hmm, I probably spent between 20-30 hours extra time doing school work during an average week (during term). That was homework, assignments, and study (it was about 2-3 hours a night during the week and then about 5-6 hours per day on weekends, something like that). Not much of that was Youtube filled, but if I'm doing easy homework then yeah I might have had a video on in the background :) In September and October, I did 9 hours a day fairly consistently (3 past papers per day was always my goal). I was a bit nuts ;)

Studied at my desk almost all of the time, sometimes I'd relax and go out to the Kitchen table or even just sit on the lounge while writing notes, or whatever. Never went to the Library much, though when I did, it was actually really good. Maybe I should have done it more often ;D

I've written heaps about the ways I studied, I tried so many I barely remember them all. Past papers heaps. Writing study notes. Recording video lessons to myself (which I dropped off later in the year, but they worked really well while I had the time, I wish I kept them going). Lots and lots of stuff, but in the HSC period it was all practice papers. It did suck a bit at times, but I was motivated to succeed, it got me through ;D

At least in our physics subjects we don't have to talk about sociology ;)

Another reason why VCE Science is way better than HSC Science: At least until the syllabus changes in 2019 ;)

Ahaha thanks for saying so! It's okay, I don't consider myself a petty person, but I would have loved to do that too, just this once ;)

My Year 12 formal was really cool! It was at a really fancy place whose name eludes me, food was amaze, music was fantastic, we got our Principal to dance with us which was fabulous. It was nice to just hang out with them as human beings and friends rather than teachers and authority figures ;D

I did indeed take my girlfriend (together 4 years at the time, 5.5 years now) and yes, my tie matched her dress ;) buying that tie was a bloody nightmare mind you, her dress was this weird pink colour, and literally no-one had this colour in a tie. We went to three different shopping centres before we found a match. It was like an $80 tie, but at that point I didn't care ;)

Tbh looked at one of your exams on the BOS site, as well as the question thread, I really like the difficulty of the questions. They're harder than the VCE ones and the concepts explored are really cool (more in-depth than vce)
Also - the part with the medical physics and stuff? I'd love to do that they're so cool!

but put in sociology and that outweighs all the positives tbh :(

I totally agree, I'd love to see HSC concepts explored in the more mathematical framework of VCE! I love the HSC content, just not how they test our knowledge of it. Like, how much easier would my degree have been at the start if they taught us about circuit analysis properly in Year 11? I take issue with the huge jump between HSC Physics and Tertiary Physics :P

I did Medical Physics, some of the most interesting stuff I've ever studied, and actually fairly technical! ;D

Hmm, well let's do this logically. The NSW Natmods know where I live, so not banning them. Maybe the Victorian natmod with the lowest post count (whoever that is, I assume no responsibility) ;)

Edit: Can I permaban Brenden or would that be inappropriate? ;)

I know my AMA is over, but if I were hypothetically put this question, I'd ban jamonwindeyer for what has to be the biggest cop out of the century (see above ^) ;)

srs question though. Someone asked earlier about league and union, and which was better. Controversial, but do you also labour under the delusion that rugby league is somehow more appealing than this nation's great sport, AFL, or are you of sound mind?
Just interested to hear your views, I'm not really biased in any way.

Coop Program has been great to me! It is a big commitment for sure, and sometimes losing your summer holidays isn't the best thing in the world, but the experiences and the networking is massively worth it! :)

I know that out of 20 people who interviewed for Electrical Engineering, 4 got positions, but other streams and programs were more interviews and/or less acceptances. Totally depends on the amount of sponsors in that area. I know that in total, there are less than 100 Coops in my year, and that many more than that were interviewed. I'm not sure how many people applied, but I'd wager only a small fraction got through to the interview stage :)

Super cool! It was a lot of the typical stuff (why do you want to be in this program, why are you applying for this course, how long have you been interested, etc), they asked me stuff about my results (they were surprised my Extension class was so small), the rest was personal quality stuff and asking about things in my application (Part time job was a big one, given that it is a Coop scholarship that makes sense) ;D

I chat a bit about the interviews here, if it interests you! ;D

Hey hey! In the entire HSC period I did 3 past papers a day; one in the morning, one in the afternoon, one in the evening. Right now I'd probably be having my lunch break though!! ;D

I have two questions to ask you.
How do you recover mentally from a bad 1st term of yr 12 (well only maths..which is 4 units/12)?
Is aiming for a high atar a bad thing? I have a feeling that aiming too high and not achieving it would lead to a disappointment..and aiming too high can possibly seem a guaranteed disappointment.

Mod Edit (Jamon): Restored on request, happy to answer this last question :)

Hey! I have two answers in that case! ;D

So my first half of Year 12 (for Maths especially) wasn't great. My marks in my half yearlies were decent (certainly nothing horrific), but definitely not up to my standards. My rank slipped pretty harshly and that was a hard strike in the gut. What you need to remember is that these assessments are just fractions of your assessment mark, which is a fraction of your HSC mark, which is a fraction of your ATAR. By themselves, they are insignificant.

Your job will be to use the setbacks constructively. Learn from mistakes. For me, those less than ideal results in the half yearly exams were a kick up the backside. I worked so bloody hard to avoid that happening again, like, far beyond anything I'd done in Math before that. And it worked - I didn't lose another mark in 2U before Trials, and I think I got a little string of 100% in Extension tests too.

The point is, I used the loss and made it a gain. It motivated me to do better - It should do the same for you ;D

Aiming for a high ATAR is never a bad thing. You should always be aiming high! If you want to aim high though, you need to be making steps towards achieving that goal. You can't aim to be a professional soccer player and then never go practice - That doesn't make sense. It is your responsibility to work hard enough to live up to your goals.

Inevitably, people set goals that they don't achieve. Of 77,000 students who sit the HSC, some are bound to be a little disappointed. But fear of disappointment should never dissuade you from setting goals and taking action! :) but remember to take happiness from even the smallest accomplishments. Say you set a goal of 99+, but get 97.5. You have every right to be disappointed about not getting 99+, but you should still be happy about your 97.50.

Aim high, but don't forget to be happy about achieving the smaller goals along the way as well :)

Note: This Q+A has finished, but answering this last question before the thread is locked. If anyone has any more questions for me feel free to PM or post them in a relevant forum section! ;D
