I've been browsing around this forum and have noticed that La Trobe University's Dentistry course has not been able to gain much public recognition.
I just want to introduce the course here for all those interested.
First up, for those who did not do well on the UMAT, do not panic. La Trobe's Dentistry course only takes into account your ATAR/ENTER; with the exception of special entry, transfers and rural entry.
First up a little introduction on the course:
University: La Trobe University
Location: Bendigo, VIC
Bachelor of Sciences in Oral Health/Masters of Dentistry
It is a 5 year Bachelor/Masters program. Upon completion you will be granted a Masters degree & a fancy Dr. in front of your name.
YEAR 12 UNDERGRADUATE ENTRY
2011 PREREQUISITE

Biology (35) and Chemistry (35) - yet to be updated on the La Trobe website. Source: La Trobe Dentistry Coordinator.

2nd/3rd round offers: THERE WILL BE NO 2nd/3rd ROUND OFFERS THIS YEAR - confirmed Health Science Faculty La Trobe. (90.00+ for rural)
You must complete all 5 years to be a qualified practicing Dentist. The full course, including the Masters is CSP. Upon completion of the Bachelor you are guaranteed entry into the Masters program. In a sense, it is a single course split into two "certificates".
While the course content is not set in stone, La Trobe focuses to address the apparent lack of technical skills of Dental graduates from other schools. As such, La Trobe dedicates a large number of hours to Clinical Practice. It is a very hands on course.
1st Year Subjects
Semester 1:
Dental Science A
Oral Health Science A
Clinical Practice A
Public Health A
Semester 2:
Dental Science B
Oral Health Science B
Clinical Practice B
Public Health B
2nd Year Subjects (similar to 3rd Year Subjects).
Semester 1:
Dental Science C
Medicine A
Dental Practice A
Dental Science:
Health science subject related to Dentistry. It involves the study of embryology of the head and neck, histology of dentition (teeth), anatomy, physiology.
Dental Practice:
Study of procedures and practical training. Exposure to different dental specialty including Orthodontics, Periodontics, Pedodontics, Endodontics etc.
Medicine:
Study of medicine. Exposure to different medical specialty and how it affects dentistry, including: Cardiology (Heart), Neurology (Brain), Oncology (Cancers), Nephrology (Kidneys), Haematology (Blood) and more. It is the study of diseases, manifestations and treatment including the use of pharmacological drugs.
NOTE: You will be required to study cadavers (dead bodies). You will be up-close and personal with cadavers starting first year. Do not worry if you are afraid. It is amazingly fun! Even those who are petrified get use to it within 2 to 3 lessons.

Overall atmosphere:
The Staff
The lecturers' are highly qualified and friendly.
Since our course is so small, we are all friends to them! (They attend our balls and dance as well! Hehe)
The students
The benefit of such a small cohort is that everyone knows ...well, everyone! We are all friends. There are heaps of outings planned by the Dentistry and Oral Health Club. Movies, bowling, laser wars!!! FANTASTIC.
Accommodation
Everyone boards except for those who are local.
I live with 7 other Dental students. We have dinner together, cook, do grocery shopping and gym together. Awesome fun.
--------
Overall, the course is new and exciting. Feel free to PM me, or post here if you any questions or comments. I'm happy to assist in any way that I can.
Hope to see many of you at La Trobe University.

What can a Dentist do?
A Dentist is the GP of teeth. They are the first port of call for all dental related inquiries. As a Dentist you are trained to:
Surgically treat dental defects.
They are qualified to:
Perform radiography
Use anesthetics (Injection, nitrous oxide etc)
Prescribe (literally no prescription limits as long as it assists the procedure. i.e. prescribe anti-psychotics if you believe that the patient requires such drugs to assists treatment. Yes, Morphine as well, however, it would be hard to see why you would need such a drastic prescription.)
-
That sounds fun as.
The ENTER is still really high.
-
Also need >= 35 in bio or chem. Although if you're getting ~99.7, I imagine you've already met this prereq.
-
lol.. i rekon this guys is a lecturer @ La trobe!
-
::)
I forgot, yes there are pre-reqs.
English 35 or ESL 40
AND
Bio 35 or Chem 35
Lecturer? Ahh I wish, my grades are far too low to be a lecturer Haha!

I believe thats going to change. Refer to attached, bottom of first page.
-
Oh my Holy Lord.
That is a huge error!
The website has still not changed!
http://www.latrobe.edu.au/oral-health/dentistry.html
A lot of kids chose only one of biology or Chemistry for 2009! "La Trobe administration is completely ridiculous" - quote Anonymous Dentistry Lecturer.
I'll email the faculty and see what they say.
Unimpressed. >:(
-
TO CLARIFY
2010 will still only require ONE of either Biology 35 or Chemistry 35.
2011 however, will require both.
I have just received the email from our Dentistry Coordinator.
-
omg! are u serious?? i wanted to do dent at latrobe but after looking at those amended pre requisites(i only did bio), i dropped it off my list! i doubt putting in an irregular offer will give me much chance even if i make the clearly in? damn this really sucks =x
-
If you pass the clearly in then you can still apply for an irregular offer.
Having Bio is enough.
Best of luck.
-
Where else can I do dentistry other than La trobe? (undergraduate) I guess I will be able to move out of state.
-
a friend last year called up latrobe (after he changed mind) and asked whether he can put in an irregular offer. They said no unless he got a 99.7 enter. Otherwise no chance for an irregular offer to be accepted. It may go even higher this year because more ppl will know about latrobe dent and no requirement for umat.
-
Thats higher than Med?
-
goddamn, this course sounds hard to get into

NSW:
University of Sydney
Charles Sturt Univesity
QLD:
James Cook
Griffith
University of Queensland
SA:
University of Adelaide
WA:
University of Western Australia
VIC:
La Trobe
Melbourne University
And yes...last year's clearly in was 99.7 and to make an irregular offer, you needed above that ENTER.
Best of luck ><
-
Melbourne is postgrad isn't it? Btw, how did you find that?
-
Oh yes, sorry I didn't filter out the post graduate courses. Those are all the Universities within Australia offering Dentistry.
How I found that? A bit of research here and there, other forums as well.

YEAR 12 UNDERGRADUATE ENTRY
2010: Entry 1st round cut off 99.40 | 75 places TOTAL (approx. 55 Undergraduate, 6 Transfers, 14 Rural)
2nd/3rd round offers: THERE WILL BE NO 2nd/3rd ROUND OFFERS THIS YEAR - confirmed Health Science Faculty La Trobe. (90.00+ for rural)
The contrary - it's a very well known course as it does not take the UMAT, hence, the high ATAR cut off.
Do you happen to have the confirmation in writing from the Health Science faculty?

Regarding the 2nd/3rd round offers. Wow that is quite shattering.

That was in reference to 2010 entry, so the stream that has just completed first year. Doesn't have any implications on 2011 entry (which I assume you are applying for). Re: evidence that there was no 2nd/3rd round earlier this year for 2010 entry...it happened. There actually wasnt any offers after round 1. (vtac giude should say as much).

Ah, sorry that was quite an embarassing misunderstanding. I guess it will probably remain around those standards but then again Griffith..

^ not sure what you mean by that, but if it means what I think it does, I only just decided to do it because I just found out I was financially able to, and had a last minute epiphany about pharmacy at monash not being for me.

Yes I'm fairly sure you can HOWEVER... you have to sit the UMAT and reapply and attend an interview. If you get in you'll be a first year student again.
