Title: subject selections help
Post by: siqing on November 21, 2019, 08:04:19 pm
so basically i'm going into year 11 next year and stuck between a couple options:

1. 1/2 chem, 1/2 methods, 1/2 spesh, 1/2 english, 3/4 physics, 3/4 glopol
2. 1/2 chem, 1/2 methods, 1/2 bio, 1/2 english, 3/4 physics, 3/4 glopol
3. 1/2 chem, 1/2 methods, 1/2 spesh, 1/2 english, 3/4 physics, 3/4 bio

definitely doing chem, methods, english, physics

considering that i would be picking up 3/4 bio and glopol without the 1/2 if i decide to do them, what would be the best option? also am looking into engineering for uni, which is why i'm thinking about spesh

or maybe i should just do 5 3/4s in year 12 instead of 4? (our school requires us to do 6 in total so dropping one would not be an option)

What do you see as the advantages & disadvantages between bio, chem & spec?

i guess chem has always been a given, it's a prereq for a lot of the courses i'm considering. for spesh, it's just that i'm very heavily considering engineering and i heard it's very helpful to have done spesh in vce. it also matches well with physics which i'm 100% doing and you can't just completely ignore the scaling for spesh too. for bio (as well as glopol), i guess it's just something i'm genuinely interested in although i don't know how well i'll do jumping straight into 3/4.

maybe it's better to do only 1 3/4 subject in year 11 then? i'm not too sure what the advantages of that are.

you could always do 2 3/4 subjects in year 11, and if you don't perform your best in one of them, then you can repeat the subject again in year 12.
Also, keep in mind that in year 11 you have more time to dedicate towards your 3/4's so if you can handle it than it could be a huge advantage doing 2 3/4 subjects, but if you feel more comfortable doing one than that's fine as well.

Hey Ernie,
For a question like this, you might want to start a new thread as this thread is specifically about siqing choosing between bio, chem and spesh. In terms of you deciding, do you think that you would find it hard to learn and practice a language by distance ed? ;D

unfortunately our school doesn't let us repeat, which is the stupidest rule i've ever heard but it is what it is.

also i'm trying to decide between bio, spesh, and glopol, i'm definitely doing chem lol. at this point i'm almost certain i'm gonna do spesh instead of bio (like just drop bio completely, unless they let me jump straight into bio 3/4. not sure if that's a good idea tho), and plus i can always switch out of spesh if i don't like it but i can't switch into it at 3/4 level.

Dropping into bio 3/4 without 1/2 is generally pretty manageable - there's not much knowledge you're expected to have from 1/2.

just another question:

i'm not sure if i can switch to unit 3/4 bio for next year (due to timetabling issues and full capacity classes). is bio worth doing 5 3/4 subjects in year 12 for? i've heard a lot about how only doing 4 in year 12 is a huge advantage, but i'm really not sure how i will do in global politics 3/4 without the 1/2 (this is the subject i have currently), so is it better to just do:

1/2 methods, 1/2 spesh, 1/2 chem, 1/2 bio, 1/2 english, 3/4 physics in year 11?
