I'm in year 11 and I did 2 subjects this year, Maths Methods and Music Performance

Methods: 45 -> 49 (?) I've only checked the scaling report for this scaling, and since I don't have enough subjects to complete my ATAR, I can't see what the actual scaled score is. Still, very happy about this result as I put in work for this subject and really wanted a 45.

Music Performance: 41 -> 41 (?) I thought I'd actually do pretty well in Music, but I guess my SAC marks were dragged down cause my cohort didn't do so well as a whole. However, still happy to get a 40+ score cause most of my cohort got below 40.

Overall its a pretty decent start to the VCE journey, still have Latin, Chem, Specialist, Physics and English next year, which is a lot of work, but I feel more prepared and more confident.

Honestly I’ve got a lotta respect for you, mate. 40+ in both and you’re in Year 11? Phenomenal. I only did Methods this year and I couldn’t even manage a 40, so you should be super duper proud of yourself! 🤩

Got a 37 in Methods…I’m so disappointed, I worked so hard this year  :'(
I understand, I got 34 in economics and was expecting much higher.

Disappointment is really hard! I remember feeling the same after getting my early bio score. Hope you've got some nice summer plans before you have to knuckle down next year!

I get you, I was following your VCE journal and knew how high you were aiming. But alas, God’s will is God’s will, it was all meant to be…🙃

Hi everyone,

I am a year 11 student and finished biology this year with a raw 34. I was not expecting something this low and was instantly demolished. I know these aren't my full capabilities at all.

Is it still possible to get a 98+ atar?

I was in a similar situation to you when I was in year 11. First of all, after taking bio units in biomed, I can assure you that you shouldn't beat yourself up about it because VCE bio isn't an accurate reflection of your biology knowledge at all. It's all about kissing up to VCAA and memorising their pedantic stock responses ad verbatim. In uni bio, you don't get marks stolen from you just cuz you wrote "polypeptide" instead of "polypeptide chain".

I scored a 38 raw on VCE bio myself in year 11 which I was not happy about, but I noticed where my study habits for bio were lacking (ie I didn't bother memorising those stock answers, rote learning these sucks but it's the only way to do well in VCE bio), so I brute forced explanation questions in the short answer section for chem, this got me a 40 raw in it. In the end, my ATAR was just above 98 which you said was your goal, so it's certainly very doable. Just think of your year 11 bio experience as an imperfect draft that you will improve upon next year. BTW, since you did bio 3/4, half of unit 4 chem will be very easy for you cuz it's all on the biochemistry of food ie enzymes, macromolecules, digestion etc

Hi there!

Firstly, I’d just like to say that I’m sorry you didn’t get the score you were expecting. It was a tough year, so you should just be proud of your efforts, regardless of the number.

Of course you can still get a 98+ ATAR, depending on how many subjects you’re doing. If you’re doing 4 altogether, I’m not really sure about it. But 5 or 6 then hell yeah, just make sure that Biology is in your bottom one or two so that it only counts as a 10% increment. Work harder next year so you can achieve your goals, and don’t lose motivation. I did a 3/4 subject this year and I didn’t get what I was aiming for, but I am just trying to move forward so that my other subjects are not affected. Just keep trying! You’ll get there!

CONGRATS TO EVERYONE WHO RECEIVED A STUDY SCORE/ATAR

My results:
English: 41 ( A+ A+ A+) Thought I cooked the exam but turned out to be my best raw score.

English Language: 39 ( A B+ A+) Literally SAC Attack to the extreme. It's such a good score but for the whole year I was aiming for a 40+. Thanks SAC scaling. Even my teacher was surprised by my result.

French: 25 scaled to 35 B B C+. Eh, it is what it is.

Music: B D+ C+ 21. HAHA we do not discuss this one.

Philosophy: B A+ B+ 34. I am content with this.

ATAR: 90.85. I am overall very happy.

Okay sooooooo

English Language: B+ B+ C+ 30 -- 32.67
I'm pretty happy with that since i didn't like eng this year

Chemistry: C A C+ 29 -- 32.90
Yeahhhhhhhhhhhh unit 4 was good but then flunked the exam so :/

Biology: B B+ C+ 30 - 30.34
Again can't complain

French: B C C 22 - 31.76
We don't need to talk about it

Maths Methods: B+ A A+ 38 - 43.39
I am so proud of myself for this especially since it matches the 38 i got in further in year 10 plus i want to do maths at uni

Further Maths A A A+ 38 (2019) - 35.82
pretty good for year 10 me

ATAR 87.90
Can't say I'm surprised but I'm not disappointed either because it hopefully gets me into science at monash next year and that's what matters
Gotta say too I was relying on french to pull up my score but it didn't make it to my top 4 in the end soooooo just gotta laugh about it

Congrats everyone on their results this year !!!
2019 | further maths [38]
2021 | maths methods, english language, french, chemistry, biology

From my students who got 45 in Methods this year it scaled to 48.69 btw and grats! Great start

Congratulations everyone on your results!

English: 45 -> 44.90
Incredibly proud of this one! English has always been my worst subject, but I worked so hard for it this year, so I’m glad it paid off.

Chemistry: 48 -> 49.13
Absolutely shocked. I’ve always been reasonably good at Chem, but I was expecting high 30s to low 40s. I’d never had any papers properly marked before (only by myself), so had no idea if I was even answering the worded questions correctly. I just can’t believe it 😂

Physics: 48 -> 48.87
I was hoping for a score like this in Physics. I actually found the exam this year decently challenging, so was a bit unsure to how high I’d actually score, as I wasn’t fully confident in a lot of my responses to the extended questions. Very pleased though.

Spesh: 45 -> 53.56
Wow. I loved Spesh, it was my favourite subject by far this year, but to get a 45 after that second exam, I am absolutely shocked. I did reasonably well on the first paper, but the second one was a whole different story. I was a complete mess, unable to answer large parts of the questions, and I even left a few marks blank, which I have never ever done before on a Maths exam. I was so disappointed in myself, since I thought I lost like 20+ marks, and was definitely expecting high 30s. I’m over the moon with the 45, and I’m interested to see the statement of marks for this one 😂

History Revs: 41 -> 41.14
Very pleased. I never expected to do this well in History, it was really just my ‘fun‘ subject. Again, I’d never had anything properly marked, so I wasn’t confident that I’d answered the questions properly. Thankfully it all seemed to work out though!

ATAR: 99.80
I am honestly still in shock with this ATAR! I was really hoping for 99+, but thought that I was more likely to score in the 98s after my exams. Methods (which I did in yr 11) wasn’t even in my top four, which was very surprising 😂. I’m very, very happy :)
2020: Methods [45]
2021: Specialist Maths [45], Chemistry [48], Physics [48], English [45], Revolutions [41]
ATAR: 99.80

English: 33-31.16
Methods: 32-36.91
Spesh: 28-39.19
Chinese SL (2020): 34-44
Chem: 28-31.80
Physics: 31-32.96
ATAR: 90.80
Lowkey feel like I finessed the system because I did literally nothing throughout the year...

Hi all
I'm a year 11 student and got a raw score of 39 for Bio. I am really disappointed, I thought I was going to get over 40.
Does anyone know what a 39 in Bio equates to in terms of percentage of students that achieved this (a 40 is around the top 9%)? I know that this is unknown at this stage (the VCAA said they won't have the data for this until next year) so does anyone have an estimate, maybe based on last year's data (which I can't find)?
Also, I'm really annoyed as I think my performance in the GAT has affected by SAC scores (I think they might've been scaled down in the final check, based on my GAT marks). I didn't realise until I started reading more about it today, how much the GAT can affect your SAC scores (not sure about the exam mark?), I thought it was mainly if you couldn't do your exam. I didn't even try in the GAT (didn't finish it either), I was too stressed at the time and thought it wouldn't affect my results. My GAT results were pretty average (which is bad for me - not a true reflection of my abilities).
Anyway I have moved on already, am already thinking of how I can do better next year but it would be good to get some answers on the above....

In mathematical notation, study scores are distributed such that X~N(30 ,49), in other words, with a mean of 30 and a standard deviation of 7. If you integrate the Gaussian distribution function from negative infinity to 39, the area would be 0.9, meaning that you’ve beaten about 10% of the bio cohort
