A bit of a random question here... When using quotes with profanities from texts in essays /short responses, what is the best way to write them?
a) Omit the profanity altogether
b) Write the profanity normally, as if it were just another word.
c) Write the profanity using asterisks.
E.g. “You know more about Shakespeare than any f***ing scholar.”

I would probably omit the word altogether unless you were using that word as part of your analysis. English is quite a conservative subject in this aspect so I would try to avoid using profanity in any situation. However, if you were going to analyse it then I'd suggest using the asterisks :D

Jusr providing a completely different perspective here but I personally just wrote out the word as it is. Like for my Billy Elliot practice essays that I submitted to my teacher, I would always use the quote “Boys do wrestling and boxing.... Not fucking ballet” all the time. My teacher was a HSC marker as well and she really didn’t mind and wasn’t too fussy about it at all. English really shouldn’t be a subject that uses censorship imo because the use of profanity kind of reflects our society and the type of language we use today.
But do whatever you feel comfortable with :)

I agree with Bea - I always wrote out the word. The profanity is a part of the text and an aspect of the authors representation! ;D
But like, you won't lose marks for putting asterisks if you are more comfortable with that on a personal level :)

I think I will probably just go with writing it as per normal, just because it is the easiest, and I won't have to consciously think about editing it. :)
