Title: REALLY DUMB CHEM QUESTION
Post by: I.09 on October 05, 2021, 09:53:13 pm
Hi Guys,
I am just going over the different qualitative tests for cations in solution, and I was wondering how to distinguish between Ag+ and Pb2+?
Would them with Iodide work? Cos Pb2+ will precipitate to be yellow in colour and does Ag+ precipitate with Iodide?

Any clarification will be greatly appreciated. I feel like this is an easy question but I am so stuck :)

Both will precipitate with iodide although silver iodide is considerably less soluble. Best way is to add hcl so you form agcl and pbcl. agcl will darken in uv as it decomposes to silver and chloride gas, whereas pbcl won't. Hope that helps!
