Hi guys,
For Mod A we've studied 1984 in class and i was just wondering if in an essay i could write the title in numbers "1984" or would i have to write "Nineteen Eighty-Four?"
Thanks

This received much dispute. My teacher told us for our trials that it was permissible to write '1984', however she could not provide the same reassurance for the final HSC.

I wrote the long thing out because it didn't really waste time for me, however you might want to ask your teacher before the exam (or now by email) what he/she expects. Regarding the final exam, however, I can't comment further

Hey Alize! Welcome to the forums!! ;D to be safe, write "Nineteen Eighty-Four (1984)" in your Thesis paragraph, then use the numbers from that point forward  ;D

Tiny problem. The brackets are usually used to state the year of publication of the text

Hmm, if the original poster would like to include that (and it is a good inclusion for a Module A essay, not so relevant elsewhere) then perhaps integrate it throughout the sentence.

EG - This notion is explored in George Orwell's 1949 science fiction novel, Nineteen Eighty Four (1984)  ;D

But surely they're not gonna be marking the essay and see '1984' and instantly be like "No! Minus one mark!"

Oh of course not, definitely not by itself! But it plays to the overall idea of academic style and proper setting out of your ideas ;D

To make it completely clear, whenever I used acronyms/shortened versions of longer phrases, I  write something like

... as discussed in Nineteen Eighty Four (hereafter '1984')
ATAR: 99.80

Mathematics Extension 2: 93
Physics: 93
Chemistry: 93
Modern History: 94
English Advanced: 95
Mathematics: 96
Mathematics Extension 1: 98

This is the best way in my opinion! It is also worth knowing, for anyone who is browsing this thread, that the notes from the marking centre last year said that students can improve on "referencing texts appropriately instead of relying on unwieldy acronyms."

Weird call - I didn't expect it. But, keep it in mind!

Generally HSC markers don't want to take marks away, so i wouldnt stress. Though it an look smarter to write the words

I always wrote the words too ;) I don't think it's smarter per say, but it does flow a little better in my opinion. Using acronyms in conjunction with other less than ideal choices can culminate in a more difficult read for the marker ;D
