UCAT Resources, Info and Links

Hey everybody!

As you may be aware, the UMAT, which has been difficult for literally thousands of students in the past numerous years, has recently been replaced by the UCAT. This is a pretty big change, and one that wasn’t widely anticipated.

It’s pretty likely that existing UMAT groups will re-market themselves as leaders in the field and experts. Some might even just change “UMAT” to “UCAT” on their websites and the like. But in reality, the best thing you can do at the moment is to not panic, and to assess your options carefully (very carefully) when it comes to resources and the like available to you. Indeed, to quote directly from the UCAT website (it’s very important to read the quote below):

Quote from: University Clinical Aptitude Test
Please note, although new to Australia and New Zealand for 2019, the UCAT has been used for over 12 years in the UK under the test name UKCAT.  The following preparation materials, although referred to as UKCAT represent the exact content of the UCAT ANZ test and may be used to familiarise yourself with the test format and to prepare for the test.  These preparation materials will be re-published in December 2019 to reflect the new international test name of UCAT.

Candidates should be aware that whilst there are many commercial companies publishing books and offering coaching for our tests, the UCAT ANZ Consortium does not work with any of these companies or endorse the use of their materials. Taking advantage of these opportunities can cost candidates a great deal of money and we would advise you to be sceptical about claims they can help you do well in the test by coaching.
Commercial organisations will be using items that are not necessarily of the standard you will encounter in the UCAT and this may distort your performance whilst practising.

The purpose of this thread is to introduce the UCAT, and then to collaborate in order to provide a comprehensive list of resources. If you know of or find a UCAT resource, drop it in the thread below for all to benefit, and we can add it to the opening post. :) Please note that, as outlined in our forum rules, we definitely do not condone illegal distribution of copyright materials in any way, shape or form.

Part 1: what is the UCAT?
Spoiler
The UCAT, or, more formerly, the University Clinical Aptitude Test, is the test used to assist tertiary institutions consider applicants for a range of degrees, including medicine, dentistry, and some other clinical sciences.

It’s used by a range of universities across Australia and New Zealand. You can find more information on this here, but the list is:
Quote
•   The University of Adelaide
•   Curtin University
•   Monash University
•   The University of Newcastle/University of New England
•   The University of New South Wales
•   The University of Queensland
•   University of Tasmania
•   The University of Western Australia
•   Western Sydney University
•   The University of Auckland
•   University of Otago

It was announced in September 2018 that the UCAT would replace the UMAT for 2019 and beyond.

Part 2: what are some of the changes from the UMAT?
Spoiler
Whilst the basic premise of the UMAT and the UCAT are similar, there are some fundamental changes.

Structure
The UMAT had three sections: Logical Reasoning and Problem Solving, Understanding People, and Non-verbal Reasoning. The UCAT, on the other hand, has five sections, as follows. The numbers in brackets indicate how many questions there are per section.

1.   Verbal Reasoning (44)
2.   Decision Making (29)
3.   Quantitative Reasoning (36)
4.   Abstract Reasoning (55)
5.   Situational Judgement (69)

You can find more about the time breakdown for each section here.

Length
The UMAT went for three hours; the UCAT is two hours long.

Actually sitting the test
Everybody sat the UMAT on the same day. For the UCAT, however, you have more flexibility. In fact, testing runs for the entire month of July – from 1 July to 31 July (for 2019, at least).

Part 3: UCAT resources
Spoiler
So where should you be looking when it comes to UCAT resources? Over the years, many UMAT resources have popped up, but many of these were very expensive, and inaccessible to many students for that exact reason.

Luckily, you actually have a bunch of free and low-cost UCAT resources available to you. This is largely due to the fact that the UCAT is, to my knowledge, the same as the UKCAT, which is the equivalent test used in the United Kingdom.

Official UCAT website
UCAT’s official website offers some really fantastic resources at no cost; you can find several of them here. For example:

Practice tests: click here.
Question tutorial: click here.
Question banks: click here.
Tour tutorial: click here.

Part 4: UCAT resources located on the forum
Spoiler
UMAT REPLACED - WHAT IS THE UCAT? - new to UCAT? start here!
UCAT QUESTION COMPILATION/FAQ - got any questions? ask them here!
UCAT EXPERIENCES THREAD - share your experiences here!

There are also loads and loads of existing threads with a huge variety of questions - if you've got a question, it may have already been answered! Use this opportunity to explore the UCAT board (and perhaps even the rest of the forum?? 🤔🤔🤔)

Again, we will update this thread with additional resources as they come. Please feel free to contribute any of your own below! :)

Monash has not yet indicated how they will be assessing UCAT results. With that being said it is possible they may have an equivalent of the 50/50/50 rule in place, requiring a certain score in each of the five sections.
