Dropping from advance maths to standard maths

Hi, I am in Year 12 and I'm currently doing Advance Mathematics. I've recently received my mark from my recent tests and I am ranked 17/19 in the course, and my teacher is repeatedly trying to manipulate me into dropping to the standard course. Although I am able to understand the content of Advance Mathematics, I stress when it comes to exam time leading to bad results. My parents and my mathematics tutor is insisting that I should stay in Advance. Any advice on what I should do, who should I listen to? (I want to study Accounting/finance at uni)

Hey baran.ata-onder,

This is definitely a difficult decision, and you'll need to consider your own unique goals and situation when choosing - I would recommend not putting too much weight on peer pressure without knowing why they're giving the advice they're giving.

Particularly with your teacher, having a chat with them and asking them why they think you'd do better in standard would probably be helpful, as well as if they're aware as to why you want to stay in advanced.

That being said, accounting and finance in university would benefit greatly from having some of the knowledge in advanced depending on the specific parts you specialise in. You should definately look into the prerequites and assumed knowledge for your degree and see how much maths is assumed/required. Personally, I would recommend trying to stay in advanced because of your major and because I think it would be much harder to learn this outside of a high school environment.

However, the choice is ultimately yours and there are always other options, like maths bridging courses, tafe certificates, or additional math electives you can take in university. However, these come at the trade off of costing more time and money, although it's good to be aware that they do exist.

Good luck with your choice!
