Hi all!

First thing's first: I've actually graduated from uni. In fact, I finished up my Honours year at the end of 2016. I felt like I was missing out on the fun, though, so please accept this journal for what it is, even though it isn't strictly a university journey journal. ;)

I completed a Bachelor of Arts at Monash University, majoring in Linguistics and International Studies. I preferred the former, and went on to write my thesis in the field of sociolinguistics. More specifically, I considered the linguistically gendered media portrayal of Julia Gillard and Kevin Rudd throughout their respective Prime Ministerships. I absolutely despised uni through my first semester and to a lesser extent first year, but ended up loving it. I think I'll go back to academia at some point in my life. If you're interested, you can read more in the following threads - or simply ask below!:

- Studying Arts at Monash: a guide
- [GUIDE] Writing a fully sick and hektik essay
- Studying abroad, student exchange: what, why, how

I now work full-time, which you can read about here:
- How I Work For ATAR Notes - And How You Can Work For ATAR Notes

But what's this journal all about, punk?

Great question. This journal will be for random musings, things I've realised about school/uni in hindsight, and things I learn about stuff on a day-to-day basis. Am I going to make the first of those musings now?

No. No, I am not.

There will be many Avett Brothers references. I'm a bit disappointed in myself that I didn't include one (or several) in the opening post.

Excited to hear about these work shenanigans.

And the other thrilling realisations?

I think this year has helped me to realise the importance of breaks.

I've always been big on the whole not pushing yourself too hard philosophy. Like, if I didn't want to study, I wouldn't study - and that worked for me. I've written fairly heavily on things like keeping certain times of the week free, trying not to get drawn into working 24/7 (with varying success), and so on. I've taken breaks when I've needed them.

But like, that's always really been on a day-to-day basis. Don't work too long for any given period of time, make sure you get your sleep each night etc. What I've realised this year is that you also need breaks on a wider level. Stress, fatigue and shit like that really can accumulate without you noticing - and if that happens, you're not going to have a fun time.

Next year, and from now, I'm going to try to more actively take care of myself. Not that I'm an unhealthy person (I don't think) - but I could certainly go out of my way more to, y'know, make sure I'm sweet.

What's your advice on sticking to taking breaks when you should and making that a new habit, instead of procrastinating? (I feel like you've answered this before and I've probably missed it. Sorry if this is so.)

What's your advice on sticking to taking breaks when you should and making that a new habit, instead of procrastinating? (I feel like you've answered this before and I've probably missed it. Sorry if this is so.)

I think the most pertinent thing here is to make sure your breaks are simply more enjoyable than procrastinating.

I'd usually set myself a target - so like, perhaps watch a lecture, or spend half an hour summarising notes, or an hour working on an essay. For me, time constraints work(ed) better than quantity constraints, if that makes sense. Saying something like "I'll work until I get this introduction done" is to me when you become most vulnerable to procrastination; you could, theoretically, be working on that introduction for hours. Until you finish the introduction, you don't feel like you deserve a break or whatever, but obviously you can't keep concentration levels high that entire time. As a result, you (well, I) tend to start doing other things - checking Facebook, thinking about other shit. Just generally not being productive.

By setting time limits, on the other hand, I knew when the break was coming - and that motivated me to be more productive in the time I had remaining. When the break came, I tried to do something I genuinely enjoyed. So like, not just scrolling through social media. Usually this involved walking to go and get coffee. ;)

In general, I've been pretty cognisant of my marks and the like. If I'm not doing anything of note, I feel like I should be, so my go to was usually to read the essay one more time, or do one more reading etc. Having these time constraints really helped, though, with both productivity and making sure I wasn't working too hard.

Not 100% if that answered your question or not, but I hope so! :)

Nah all sweet - thanks for the question!

How do you usually deal with it?
Title: Re: J41's work shenanigans and other thrilling realisations
Post by: AngelWings on November 30, 2017, 06:21:46 pm
How do you usually deal with it?
Depends on the circumstances.
If it's urgent, then I will go use variants of the Pomodoro method. Try for 15 minutes, stop, take a break (e.g. walk somewhere, drink a glass of water, check my phone), get back to it. I extend that as time progresses to an hour.
If it's not urgent, I might multitask until I feel ready to do the work I've allocated myself. (Basically, I bore myself as quickly as I can and will end up studying.)
Sometimes, I'll write out a to-do list and work from there, encouraging myself by using music or a motivational video before I study.
Over the years, my methods have changed a lot. These are only three of the methods I can remember off the top of my head.

Today is (virtually) my last day of work for the year.

It's been a pretty big year for me personally. This time last year, I'd just got results back for my Honours thesis. I'd just been employed for 2017, and was about to go overseas for a month. Since then, I've done a lot of stuff I probably didn't think I would have by this point.

I think one thing that has made itself abundantly clear this year is the importance of people. Specifically, those with whom you work on a day-to-day basis. Colleagues would make such a huge difference in practically every domain, and I'm very, very lucky to be surrounded by a freakin' amazing group of people.

Days like today are weird, too. Oddly nostalgic. ATAR day always makes me think back to when I received my own results, and what's changed since then. It's funny looking back at the whole process - in hindsight (and probably also at the time), it all seems so unnecessarily stressful!

I just want to say that I am extremely thankful for my job.

In all honesty, I had a pretty tough end to last year and start to this one. I was in a bad headspace for reasons I won't go into, but I'm feeling well and truly back now, and living life. Loving each day.

I don't think many people would have the opportunity of doing work about which they're so passionate that a lot of the time it doesn't feel like work at all. That's what I have, and I'm very cognisant of what a privileged position I am now in.

Good times. 👍

I feel so uncomforable because I can't quote a section of video

If you drink the tea quickly, it's fine to leave the teabag in because the flavour will get to a nice level. If you drink it slow, it's barbaric as the tea will get overly strong and make you crinkle your nose in disgust once you get to the last few drops

I have a cavoodle! I'll let you judge his cuteness for yourself...

That first photo is the only time we got his fur cut properly. He's totally chill but my other dog (a schnoodle) is very...excitable. Now we cut his fur, it's very thick though so the blade keeps going blunt.

He's a really relaxed doggo, especially compared to my other dog. He doesn't really bark much, except when there's someone he actually thinks is trying to break in or I fight with my siblings (he takes my side though so it's all good haha)

He's 9 (ish) and hasn't had any health issues or anything - except we reckon he's getting arthritis because he's started refusing to go outside in the morning when it's cold and he'll snuggle up next to us instead which isn't normal.

Glad to see you've joined #teamdoggo

See you at RMIT (although I won't be there long, just coming for the English lecture and freebies)

Also one of my teacher's has a spoodle which she's brought into school and they're super cute too.
