Title: Class of 2021 General Discussion
Post by: JerryMouse2019 on September 29, 2019, 08:08:36 pm
Hello there,

Allow me to introduce myself, I am a fellow Queensland class of 2021 student.

Since I could not find a thread where class of 2021 students were able to converse with other class of 2021 students, I thought that it would be best for me to create a thread for everyone graduating in 2021. This thread is for general conversation regarding the new QCE system and anything else that comes to your mind :)

My only question for the many people that are graduating in 2021 is, how are you all feeling about this new system?

Kind regards
JerryMouse2019

Hey JerryMouse2019! I'm also class of 2021, albeit Victorian. How are you feeling about transitioning from Year 10 to QCE?

Hello laura_,

It's quite daunting to think that in only a few years I will have graduated high school albeit under a new system that I know very little about. Since we don't know what the scaling will look like for any of the subjects, it's been hard to think about how the scaling will affect my potential ATAR rank. I've heard a lot about how much of a huge transition there is between how hard year 11 is compared to year 10 since a single unit lasts one term and a half (15 weeks of studying for one subject). I can only think of ways that I can prepare for my QCE, so this is why I am planning to study a little in the coming holidays, so that I can cover some year 11 content ahead of time.

Even though English is the only compulsory subject in the ATAR system in Queensland, my school in particular also makes doing a Maths subject compulsory as well. Due to this I have to do a Maths (and I'm not particularly great at Maths even though I've been doing the Pre-Methods course in year 10 this year). The course I was looking at before needed Methods as a prerequisite (this course was at UQ), though now I've found a similar course at QUT that only requires me to study English and one of General Maths, Maths Methods or Specialist Maths. I'm hoping to do Methods in my QCE but due to my falling grades, I'm starting to think that I should do General Maths instead since that is easier and less stressful (and also because it also fulfils the requirements of the course I'm potentially looking at doing). I also wanted to point out that I'm thinking of doing either economics or finance with information technology at university (through a double degree).

I also have a friend that I made this year who moved from Victoria to Queensland, he tells me a lot about how relaxing and different he finds Queensland from Victoria. He tells me how strict the VCE is (since they use your English results in your ATAR) (though in Queensland, English is only used in your ATAR if it is one of your best 5 subjects). I feel quite unlucky sometimes since I'm a part of the second group of year 12s who have to go through this new system, though I do find it relaxing to understand that the new system is more fair to us students than the old system we had in Queensland. It's also quite amusing to think that we stole some subject names from Victoria (we renamed our English and Maths subjects to match Victoria's). I think that we can finally say that the QCE is more comparably to the HSC as well as the VCE (in terms of rigorousness).

Well that's all I can say about my thoughts on the transition from year 10 to the QCE.

How about you though, how are you feeling about moving into the phase of the VCE in Victoria?

Thanks for replying,

Kind Regards

Hello,

I知 also graduating as part of the class of 2021 in Queensland. Honestly, year 11 and 12 seem pretty daunting to me, as they seem to have a way higher workload than year 10.

I知 going to be taking Literature, Maths Methods, Maths Specialist, Physics, Chinese and Modern History. Initially, I thought of taking Chemistry (as a pre-requisite for Medicine) but found that it wasn稚 for me. Now, I知 struggling to find a uni course of interest so my subjects are a bit all over the place. We値l see how it goes.

Pleasure to meet you all!

Great to have you here! :)

It's great to think about, but try not to stress too much about uni degrees and the like. You still have a lot of time to find something you're interested in and passionate about, and even if you don't, no stress! I didn't know what I wanted to do even right at the end of Year 12, and even through uni itself. It'll all work out.

How are you finding your subjects so far?

Thanks for the wise words, Joseph41!

I知 actually quite excited about my subjects; its great to (mostly) be able to choose the courses I can study during my senior years. Though the external exams for some subjects, such as Chinese (my third language), seem slightly daunting, I think all the preparation from this year will serve us well.

Just wondering:

What subjects did you take in high school? Would you recommend taking uni course/s in high school?

Hello Ereh,

You should only take uni courses while you are at school if you can handle the extra work load and considering the fact that we don't know exactly how much harder year 11 and 12 will be currently it wouldn't be a good idea to do so. Though if you can handle the extra workload and if you are interested in it then you should go for it. I'd also like to point out that some scholarships at some universities may not apply to you if you did the uni courses at school program. Also if you have no idea of what career you want, then have you tried doing any career quizzes by any chance? If not then have a go at these ones below:

https://match-my-skills.qut.edu.au/

https://joboutlook.gov.au/CareerQuiz

https://myfuture.edu.au/

Also if you didn't know already, if you want to find out which uni gives you the best experience in terms of your chosen career field or degree then check out these websites. They use official survey data taken from students annually to rank universities in terms of teaching quality, learning resources, learner engagement, student retention rate, graduate salary etc. These surveys are conducted by the government annually.

https://www.qilt.edu.au/

https://www.gooduniversitiesguide.com.au/university-ratings-rankings (This website uses the QILT data and ranks the universities accordingly and it awards 5 star ratings to those that are in the top 20 percent)

I hope you find these websites helpful.

Thanks for replying,

Kind Regards

Just wondering:

What subjects did you take in high school? Would you recommend taking uni course/s in high school?

A bit of a range! I had an English subject, a maths subject (General), a science subject (Psychology, if you want to count it as a science), a creative arts subject, and a couple of humanities. Certainly not subjects that scaled up overall!

Uni courses - good question. I didn't do one myself, and have no regrets about that. If in your position, I probably wouldn't personally, but that's absolutely not to say that you shouldn't. Does your school have a careers counsellor or anything along those lines? :)

Hey everyone,

I thought that it would be a great idea if I shared this code magazine with you :)

https://issuu.com/refractionmedia/docs/cwcode19_01

It's free to read and it tells you about some amazing ways people are using technology to solve global problems.

I hope you enjoy reading it :)

Also I wanted to point out that apparently they are delivering 50 copies of this magazine to every high school in Australia and NZ for free :)

Thanks,

Hello everyone,

I haven't started unit 1/2 yet since unit 1/2 begins when I start school next week (which is why I haven't had any homework to do over the holidays).

However, I have started doing some work on the unit 1 part of the QCE General Maths syllabus.

Going into Year 11 still feels daunting as I sometimes still can't believe that I'm in my 2nd last year of high school, albeit with only 3 terms of Year 11 (since Year 12 begins in term 4 of this year for me).

I just hope that I can focus and do my best in all of my subjects this year (even though the ATAR period doesn't begin until term 4 for me).

Thanks for reading this post fellow 2021 grads,

Kind Regards

Hey elmobluey,

Judging by your subject choices, it looks like to me that you're aiming to do something in science, engineering or medicine after you graduate next year.

Is my observation right?

If it is then please up-vote this comment :)

Yes! Haha, in 2 years. I aspire to be a vet one day. But I'm happy to do anything science-y really.

This feeling hasn't caught onto me quite yet. It probably will on the first day. I've heard classes go through so much more content compared to year 10 and it's overwhelmed some people.

I love animals of course! I've always wanted to help and heal them. I always want to learn about them, ever since I was really young. We don't deserve animals to be honest  :'(. Ever since early last year, I got an amazing science teacher that pushed me and motivated me so much, so my love for science has grown a lot too :))

Not really, at least I don't think so. Some schools do "early commencement" (or headstart ect.) like our school, so we start our subjects at the end of the previous year and get set lots of homework. Then, we finish in about week 2 of term 4 and exams start shortly after that.

Oooh I see. I see a lot of people in year 10 doing unit's 1 & 2 subjects? Is that just a VCE thing? Maybe my school is really small, but we only had a small handful of year 10's students that have completed u1&2 methods last year.

Yes. I've done some studying on it throughout the holidays. There's so much content!! Even in the first few pages of my textbooks. Such a giant leap from year 10, but I find it very interesting.

From what I've seen, units 1&2 early is significantly more common in Victoria than other states (e.g. I did bio early)

textbooks are notorious for having heaps of extra content so try not to stress too much about all of it - use the syllabus as your guide.

Bio is quite content heavy, but the textbook definitely has more information than you need!

What are you finding interesting?

Hey,

Hope things ease up for you soon. I understand why you would pull an all-nighter but unless you absolutely must get the work done tonight I recommend you get some sleep instead. People work, learn, and remember better when they aren't sleep deprived + being rested makes it easier to have self-discipline.

Good luck!

Hi JerryMouse

Not a moderator, but after hopping onto the QCAA website, it seems that you need 20 credits to obtain a QCE. General subjects are usually one credit per unit with the requirement of passing both units 3 and 4 to obtain any credits. In your situation, you could obtain 24 credits in total by passing your 6 general subjects. Hypothetically, you would be able to fail 4 entire units (not that you would want to :o) while still being eligible for a QCE. Also, one unit could be made up of multiple assessment pieces, so no, your QCE wouldn稚 be in jeopardy if you happened to fail one assignment.

Hope I could help and if I've gotten anything wrong, someone please call me out on it :)

Hey 2021 grads,

Please answer these questions:

How did term 1 of year 11 turn out for you?

Was unit 1 what you expected it to be?

Since you've completed one term of year 11, do you believe that this term has prepared you well enough for the coming months of year 11?

Good luck to everyone for their QCE,

The online learning session was hard, i couldn't focus on my zoom meeting and keep distracted.

I want to ask you question about subject change.
I am studying the subjects in the profile.below,
You can see that there is an odd subject.

I want to change Japanese to Biology

I reckon it would be helpful to contribute my ATAR and career.
I want to study Veterinary science or agricultural/animal science in UQ.
Thus I wish i want to drop Japanese which does not contribute for my career neither.
i know it is a late period to change subject but the reason of subject is because of career change.
When do you think it will be the best period to change the subject maybe end of the unit 1 of Biology?

Cheers I hope you study online learning great.

Hey!

Welcome to the forums :)

Heads up that unit 1 content is important for understanding bio so I would recommend if you do plan on swapping in that you do some prelearning to help you catch up. Usually it is easiest to swap in between units, but this still means talking to your school before then so that you have time to go through the process of convincing them and they have time to do what they need to for the shift. If you're confident that this is what you want to do I would start talking to them about it asap.

Good luck!

Hey! As your opinion, I determined to study bio when unit 1 ends,
I'm scared that I have to study unit 1 as well but doesn't matter haha
I'm doing English/Math B/SOR/Chemistry/Physics/Bio(Japanese)
Should I drop from SOR to R.E to study focus in other subject?
SOR/RE is mandatory for our school but do you thing SOR can make ATAR Score better or not?
I find that Atar is calculated as 4 subject + extra subject.
I am planning for Atar higher than 90, focus on 99

Unit 1 bio has heaps of resources available online for it. I would recommend taking a look at free notes, videos etc. before you swap to that class to help you be prepared and not overwhelmed. That being said, if you don't have the capacity to do that atm that's ok.

I probably wouldn't make a decision about dropping a subject given remote learning and everything unless you really feel like you need to. It can be hard to predict what your top 5 will be (for example, I thought I'd do better in chem than physics but it was the other way around) especially since scaling is a big unknown. Some students find that dropping a subject they use the time effectively on their other ones but many don't. If it was me in your position, I would prefer to keep 6 and have the safety buffer of knowing that if I underperform in one then my other 5 an be used for the calc.

SOR is a general subject and thus can contribute to your ATAR in the same way as other general subjects. RE is an applied subject and can also contribute to your ATAR but it does it differently; your ATAR is calculated from either your 5 best general subjects or 4 general subjects + 1 applied.

That all being said, this isn't about what I would do it's about what's best for you. If you are struggling with having a 6 subject workload after things have been normal for a while it might be worth revisiting your decision about how many subjects you take.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for your help!
I should not drop SOR, as you said we don't know which subject will contribute.
I think it can be a way to stand big amount of tasks and chance to increase the efficiency of using time
Thanks!

Hey guys.
I am aseem and am a class of 2021 student.

I am wondering how you guys are preparing for the term 3 science 50% exams for unit 1 and 2.

Can anyone point me where I can find questions for my subjects for my 50% exams.

My subjects are: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths methods, Specialist mathematics and English.

Hi aseem,

Check this out:

https://atarnotes.com/notes/?pag=1&state=3721&subject=0&unit=51011&key=&sort=date

This is where you can find notes for QCE subjects.

Good luck with year 11,

Kind Regards

I am also a student currently in year 11! It really is quite scary to me.
Right now I am having the dilemma of switching Chinese to Visual art but I have no idea about the scaling. I really want to go into Medical imaging and are doing the subjects: Maths Methods, Literature, Physics, Biology, Design and Chinese. Apparently 2 extra points are given for Chinese. But to be totally honest although i am getting A's I don't enjoy the subject and feel I will be failing it soon. There is so many characters to remember how to write and read. Reading and writing are my worst fears. I don't enjoy Chinese that much and would rather do Visual Art which I did until Yr 10. I received straight A's in the subject. But because I want to get into medical imaging I'm scared Visual art might scale me down.

Could anybody help? Thanks :)

Hi sealtheseal,
I recommend doing the subject you enjoy most, which sounds like Visual Arts. Scaling will not effect you if you enjoy one subject more than the other. In terms of Medical Imaging, you will not be disadvantaged as long as you meet the prerequisites (I'm not sure about pre-reqs for universities in Queensland but at Monash you need a 25 in methods and a 25 in bio or physics).

Always do subjects you enjoy, you will never regret it :)

Hey! Thanks for the reply!

I am now just worried if it will impact my QCE or my ATAR. Since I have just completed unit 1 (Term 1 and 2) of Chinese and now am starting Unit 2, not knowing when I will be able to switch over. Hopefully, I still have a chance

Hey :)

The point of scaling is to make things level for cohort competitiveness, so like eloisegrace has said it's better to make subject decisions around what you enjoy rather than based on scaling. There's a post here explaining scaling in the new QCE system which you might find useful.

You're going to find it easier to study for a subject you actually enjoy rather than one you've forced yourself into for scaling - not to mention that being happier is important on its own.

You also might be interested in this univeristy journey journal by someone studying radiography and medical imaging.

Just a quick note here that Queensland subjects aren't on a 50 point scale; 25 in VCE is better than 25 in QCE.

Best of luck!

Units 1&2 don't contribute to the calculation of your score, you'll be fine :)

Late reply but in Victoria (at least in my school), you are a "Year 12" for the last 3 or so weeks of term. It's scary that it is coming so soon I am a bit sad about it tbh  :'(

EDIT: This is the second time I have mistakenly though this was a national board not just for Queensland lol! Anyways hahaha some Victorian insight for all of you Queenslanders.

Hi All! I hope you're all doing well!
Just wanted to make a post here in regards to some group chats on Facebook for the 2021 students.
I currently have ones starting up for Methods, Spec, Chem, Bio, Jap and English.

Feel free to shoot me a message if you want to join! I'm hoping that this can be another great tool along side the AN Forums where we can collaborate with one another, send resources, etc.

Thanks guys! :)

How are you feeling about it? :)

Pretty stressed.

I got two IA1 assignments due tomorrow and an IA1 exam.

It feels like I'm about to enter my own version of Avengers: Endgame.

It feels like the final chapter of a phase in my life story.

However, I do keep wondering how people enjoy themselves during a year when everything they do matters.

To a greater or lesser extent, this is true of every year. :)

Advice from a graduating year 12: I'd say you enjoy yourself by trying not to stress and working hard at your subjects - you get to enjoy them if you work hard enough. :) And stack up stuff you'll do at the end - a good incentive :)

Thanks for that awesome advice The Cat In The Hat :)

How do you get through setbacks? You know, those times when you don't get the grade that you want.

How do you keep yourself from worrying about what your ATAR may turn out to be? Or is it not possible to stop thinking about what your ATAR may turn out to be?

I have a feeling that I'm going to have some setbacks but I just hope that in the end I'll reach my goals.

How do you get through setbacks? I find to get through setbacks what I do is... keep on working. Didn't get the mark I wanted this time? I get more determined to do better next time. (That may just be because I'm a stupidly stubborn person, but still.) Also, the pleasure of my parents is a pretty good incentive. :)

And keeping myself from worrying? Hmmm. While the pressure was really on (I have just one exam left) I had no time to worry about ATAR. It's not smart to keep constantly worrying, but I don't think it's really possible to not. It is good incentive to keep working, though. Don't let stress get in the way of your performance. I found if I was too stressed, I would do my best to take a break, generally by merely reading through notes etc. without really trying to specifically learn, and listen to bagpipe music. :D It made me feel I was still doing something useful and yet not feeling too much pressure. This especially applied directly after SACs when I felt exhausted but still felt I should be studying; also in the leadup to exams, I did do a lot more of just reading to avoid procrastination. It really did help.

A small tip, though: if you're a relatively musical person, don't underestimate how long a song you listen to will stay in your head and bug you during exams/SACs! I made the mistake of (somewhat accidentally) listening to 'Thank You For The Music' (ABBA) the night before one of my exams, and then during the exam it was difficult to concentrate on it since that song kept intruding, along with others I'd listened to even some more than a week earlier (without my wanting them to). My advice would be either restrict yourself to music in other languages you don't know how to pronounce/sing or something, or just instrumental. (That said, be aware of instrumental or otherwise music that has associations with yourself; for example, I made sure I didn't listen to Beethoven's Tempest movement 3 for a while beforehand, because it had associations with a certain scene in the novel I'm writing, to avoid that novel coming into my head during the exam.)

Hope this helps! :)

Would instrumental piano music be good to listen to?

Probably, if you like listening to music while you study/want to relax. (It's what I listen to, though not when studying.) That said, do avoid ones that will elicit certain thoughts/memories that may interfere with an exam if you remember them during the exam.
(This is, remember, all just my personal experience....)

It's not that long if you think about how much longer HSC (NSW) people have to wait compared to us.

Besides, the results have always come out in mid-December.

Also, it's actually 21 days (or 3 weeks) starting from tomorrow.
