... do you want to be in the future?
So what are your preferred courses for tertiary studies?
-
Aerospace Engineering/Science @ Monash University! :D
I will settle for nothing less. :)
-
B Commerce/concurrent dip. mathematical sciences at melbourne :D :D :D
-
I'm going to study actuarial science while I learn mathematics on my own. =}
-

at melbourne yeah? wouldnt you be taking a heap of maths subjects as part of that course? what about your breadth subjects, would you do some maths there? or is 3rd year maths a bit boring for you :P :P
-
Melbourne is the only university in Melbourne that has an actuarial program. So yeah :P.
There's a fair bit of maths in actuarial, it's sort of like an application of maths. I've said this before, but I'm going to try to attend maths lectures (that I'm not registered to). I've only become interested in maths about 1.5 years ago, before that I was a computer scientist ^^
Do you guys learn anything in your spare time?
-
Maths, but not to the level you do. more picking up a random 3/4 textbook every now and again, taking a look and doing a few questions from a chapter review
-
My dream:
Praveen, BCom (Hons) Majoring in Actuarial Studies. FIAA.
Actuarial studies FTW!
Basically, as I heard a professor say in the Actuarial Info session in open day: Actuarial studies is basically the application of probability and higher financial mathematics.
For example, you do Contigencies, Modelling, Fin Math 1,2,3 and advanced Fin math 1,2, prob, math [a] advanced, scientific computer simulations, alot of programming, and not to be forgotten.. good ole calculus! :)
-
Well here's something different I'm hoping to get into teaching :)
Bachelor of Education at either ACU or VU
If not then possibly a Bachelor of Business at Swinburne :)
-
Hmm...
I wanted to become an architect then I changed my mind.
I wanted to become an optometrist then I changed my mind.
I wanted to become a physicist then I changed my mind.
I wanted to become an aerospace engineer then I changed my mind.
I wanted to become something. Then I died. :P

Either Bachelor of Arts, Arts/Law, or Bachelor of Philosophy (Arts) at ANU.
Ultimately, I think I want to be either an academic or a writer (or both).
-
is there a particular degree called actuarial science or is it a major studies in commerce..? im considering comm/sci if the whole med thing doesnt work out...which might not (im being as realistic as possible.)
-
It's a specialisation of Commerce @ UoM.
-
i wanna be a meddie!
-
i wana beeeeeee.. working for an ngo, as a human rights lawyer, possssibly as a diplomat, something along those lines. i want to do arts and transfer into law (cos i wont get into arts/law directly if it jumps up to some crazy score at monash lol)
-
I want world domination or a commerce degree
-
Bachelor of Commerce at UoM. Hopefully.
-
Bachelor of Commerce at UoM. Hopefully.
Cool cool :)
If worse comes to worse Ill be doing a bachelor of commerce at deakin uni lol... but yeah um its like my last resort
-
Engineering/Commerce baby!!! I hope. Heaps of engy wannabe's put Monash instead of Melbourne, so i hope it doesn't go up from the 95 needed last year. *shakes fist* Dan and me might be in the same engi course for the first year I'm thinking!!!!
-
I suggest you stop advertising this thread or else the mass media will attack you :P
-
Yah.
I want to do engineering/commerce...majoring in either chemical or civil or software engineering....
if not that...engineering/science
and if not that...engineering as a single degree at melbourne...
and if not that, well...a science degree will just do fine...
I was thinking about pathology but what do you have to study in university to become a pathologist (you know..the people who takes blood samples out of people or something...)?
-
I am really hoping to get into:
Bachelor of Arts/Education at Monash Clayton.
failing that
Bachelor of Arts at Monash Clayton.
failing that
Bachelor of Arts at Monash Caulfield.
failing that
hide under a rock.
I plan to Major in History and minor in either Politics or International Studies.
I want to be a teacher. (i took Sir Thomas More's advice! lol..)

Why don't they want you going to Monash?!!
Monash is a brilliant university... well i might be biased but for me it is the best due to the quality of its History department (I would prefer ANU but thats not an option).

medicine ... but since its so freaking hard to get into ive managed to convince myself that i dont wanna do it THAT much
ive also applied for arts/law ... if i ended up doing that, id probably major in international studies and german, and minor in politics or something :)
tbh i dont actually know how majors and minors really work, but whatever :P
-

lol thats like me! I want to major in HR and minor in marketing but how you do that? I have no idea!

There are plenty of courses like that.. :)

why law?
-
cos i wanna go into international law :)
-
fuck i regret this year so much. why didnt i actually try and get the score i could have gotten :(
anyway im still thinking ill get into arts. but now i cant decide between monash and melbourne arts? is it easier to transfer into monash law internally if you're doing arts at monash rather than doing it at melb? how does that whole thing work

are you the girl who made that thread asking if she should try for the rest of the year, cos she only needed a enter of like 55 or sumthing??

Lol that was me :P
I said I needed something like 70 though :P

Tbh, i still don't get how Uni works >_>;
Lol. Ahh, anyone wanna, you know, go through it ^__^
-

Lol. Ahh, anyone wanna, you know, go through it ^__^
That's my problem as well ;o (oldest sibling ftw? =/)
It is on my to-do list after exams, to try and work it out. Eg what subjects to choose next year, when you choose them, how many you do etc xD
Aren't first year meant to be really broad anyway to deal with people that really don't have a clue what they're doing ie me? ^_^
Oh btw, because I don't think I've posted on this thread yet, science at monash, mainly because it's close, want that deans scholars thingy but that needed 99.3 last year so there is a big chance I won't get that :P
I have decided I don't like engineering since Structures and Materials in physics xD
-
Mmm...........I want to do Accounting, but i've heard that it would be smarter to do something more broad like commerce so i'm not tied down. And possibly i want to chuck in law. Then i thought, oh yea, the new melbourne model would be good for me because i can do commerce as an undergraduate degree and then law and my graduate? Or something...I don't know what i'm talking about ><;
-
here we go
this will knock your socks off
it's not science!
wishing to do secondary teaching/arts majoring in drama at deakin burwood
or drama at deakin
or performance studies or arts at vic uni
then i have a couple of acu chucked in their for gosh know's sake
and hey presto
top 12 uni courses

I put down Engineering at Melbourne uni as my first and Science (new gen) as my second, both of which will be accompanied with a diploma in Music

cos i wanna go into international law :)
ah you might like to read this if you are keen:

thanks brendan! what area of law are you hoping to go into?
childofbodom: can you tell me how the diploma of music works? what it entails etc. cos I'm thinking of taking one next year.
either that or a diploma of modern languages
-
either that or a diploma of modern languages
Did anyone end up finding out whether we can have a diploma of modern languages as our 'breadth' sub if we are doing an arts degree?

There must be some way around the damn breadth subjects

Monash. XD

i reckon the melbourne model is great. but it screws arts people over though. the best thing to do would be to take general law subjects and maybe some visual art kinds of subjects

Lol... someone needs to get intouch with their VTAC guide Razz or get in contact with their careers advisor
My careers counselor is useless :K Our old one is on long service leave this year.
My interactions with her have been relatively alright.
Term 1: me 'hi I do these subjects' her: 'you should do engineering' me: 'i want to do science'. her: 'here have all these pamplets about engineering' me: 'give me some science ones' so I get a few
Term 3: me: 'hi I've already done my vtac application already i don't want to be here kthxbye' her: 'what were your preferences' me: ' 1 science, 2 science, 3 science/engineering'. her: 'if you think you're going to get an enter score that high, you should try for an engineering scholarship. Here's the booklet for it'
I'm not that bad, some people she suggests they do something based on a subject they didn't like they did in year 10, or on their hair colour etc (that last one is a serious point, she suggested someone should do marketing or something because they were blond).
The vtac guide is really helpful :)
I should stop being lazy and look on the interwebs how uni works. After exams.

.....I like the fact taht she was still recommending engineering :D at least she didn't lose hope XD

As far as I know, it's mainly practical, not sure if it's something that qualifies you as a music teacher (something I'm looking at doing..) but I think after completing the diploma, you can add another year of studying music to get teh full degree.. something like that
and just re-reading the info page again, I think it might only be available alongside a new gen course, which isnt what I'm wanting, eh :?
-

LOL Mel. And don't forgot the person she told to be a florist because he/she does art or something :P also the person she told to be a careers counsellor just like her.
She was really mean to me :( every course I said I was interested in, she said I probably wouldn't get into *shattered*

Ah ok, thanks. I'm planning to do some piano teaching after my exams, but I'm not doing a diploma to get qualifications to teach (plus apparently I already have some) - I know quite a few people younger than me who have students. Of course I would only be teaching lower grades :)
I'm thinking of doing a diploma so I have an excuse to have extra music lessons = make my teacher very happy bunny :P

I forgot those ones, especially the careers counselor one xD I remember laughing so much at that one when I heard it.
For some reason she has full confidence in my ability to be an engineer, as in I am one of the select few people at school to be able to get into melbourne or monash xD So yeah, I have a future :P
Oh and you'd be an awesome teacher, seeing as you are insanely awesome at it :D

Bah it's going to be sad this year to have my final lesson with my piano teacher :( I think I've been having lessons with her for about 10 years now. Time for a change, maybe...
I wonder how high the standard of lessons will be at uni, I hope they give us diploma students as much spotlight as the straight degree students have.

Aww how come you're changing teachers? Just needed a change of scene?
What kind of music do you play? Cos if it's classical ... I can definitely recommend my teacher ... he's really good, works at VCA and Melb uni music faculty as a lecturer. I know I'm biased, but still :P

I'm hoping to do Computer Science at Melbourne Uni, but if I don't get the ENTER needed (~87), I'm going to do Professional Software Development at Swinburne :)

Well, since tuition comes with the music course at uni, I'm thinkin one teacher at a time.. And this year and last year I had the occasional lesson with one of the Monash piano teachers and it was by far the most productive lessons I had had
I play classical, your teacher wouldnt happen to be Glen Riddle?

How on earth did you guess that? *scared*

Bahaha no way! He set up some sort of masterclass a few weeks ago for vce music students, and I played chopin for him (as did most of the others there..), and he said he taught at the vca and did a bit of work for melbourne uni... He seems like an awesome teacher!

Lol yep, he's very awesome :) and funny in the he-doesn't-mean-to-be-funny way.
Yea he runs VCE masterclasses. When I did music I forgot to tell him I was playing at the masterclass ... hes the kinda teacher who gets annoyed if I don't tell him every single lil music event in my life ... I turned up ... didn't know he was running it ... saw him ... awkward. Heh.
-
Well, I've put down biomedical science as my first preference @ Monash Clayton, but if I don't get into that (or change my mind when the change of preferences open up again - which I might) I'd be happy just doing a standard science degree and do maths, chem, (maybe biology), computer science or physics in it. I dunno, we'll have to see.

Would've been a tad awkward lol..
Yeah, he came across as a funny guy, which is so much better, imo, than having a nonstop serious/stern teacher

my fingers are crossed for monash pharmacy
i'm not sure if i should change my preferences of pharmacy/commerce though...hmm
back ups are pharm sci/chem eng @ monash, plain old pharm sci @ monash, biomedicine @ melbourne, chemical and biomolecular eng @ melbourne, science @ melbourne
-
anyone not going to uni?
-
Me.
-
y?
-
Well I originally wanted to do Med, and applied interstate but did really poorly on the UMAT though, so didn't get offered an interview anywhere.
But Biomedicine/Law at Monash looks like a good course and I believe I can achieve the ENTER required, so yeah....
-
Music (as I was saying elsewhere), then choose between Masters/PhD, DipEd or a Masters in Architecture, you know, just for a change haha.
Sorta tempted to get back into the whole CFA thing on the side at some stage too... I dunno.

You do not need UMAT for Biomed/Law, so yes with a 98.6(i think) ENTER you can get in that course.
-
wanted to get into med but stupid umat effed me up. oh well. not fussed as i'll probably move into biomed and later do a law degree. sounds cool doesn't it biomed/law
-

yeh it does. You could probably do biomedicine at Umelb undergraduate degree and then transfer into med.
-
yeh it does. You could probably do biomedicine at Umelb undergraduate degree and then transfer into med.
it'd be damn hard though. and competitive. and don't you have to do the graduate version of the UMAT? ugh.

well you are going have to pick a profession when you get out of uni. why law though?
