English to Latin tips??

Hi everyone,

Decided this section of the forum was a bit dead (almost as dead as the language-) and that made me a bit sad, because I love Latin so damn (my favourite word is vendidi. You can't fight me on this, it's just a word that's so fun to read/look at, and even more fun to say aloud).

Anyway, what I actually wanted to ask was, does anyone have any tips for doing English to Latin translations? It's a unit 1/2 outcome and I don't feel great about it, even though my teacher's already given me a few resources. How did everyone else cope with it?

English to Latin translations are very tough, and thankfully you will never be assessed on them in SACs or the exam. This means that you shouldn’t spend too much time focusing on this outcome, but it can be a fun challenge and definitely solidify your understanding of the language. I do remember getting a few of these as bonus questions on my tests.

I wouldn’t say you explicitly need any specific or unique skills to translate English to Latin, but it takes more knowledge of grammar and structure. I’d certainly recommend having a grammatical resource you can refer to along with your dictionary if you are planning on doing any of these translations. Also stick with bracketing and labelling so you can fully unravel the sentence and understand the clauses and roles of each word. Just remember to get your teacher to check your translation as you want all your mistakes to be picked up.
