Title: VET Hospitality Question Thread
Post by: ssarahj on August 08, 2016, 06:50:50 pm
Calling all fellow Hospitality students!!

Welcome to the brand new place to come and discuss all things Hospitality, no question is too small or too large! I'm here to answer any questions I can and look over practise responses! I have extensive knowledge about the Food and Beverage Stream in particular as well as the other core topics. But don't fret if you have a question about the other streams, someone else might be able to chime in and help you out!

Hospitality can sometimes be a confusing topic (Legislation - I'm looking right at you  ;)), BUT also awesomely applicable to the REAL WORLD which makes it all worthwhile.

Make the most of this thread to ask any last minute questions before the Catholic Trial tomorrow afternoon!  ;D

Before you can ask a question, you'll have to make an ATAR Notes account here. Once you've done that, a little 'reply' button will come up when you're viewing threads, and you'll be able to post whatever you want! :)

Hey in terms of legislation. Would you have to know them word for word? Also, are there any good resources for past papers (food and beverage stream) considering the change from last year.

Unfortunately yes  :P So that means the name of the act or regulation + the year, e.g. Food Act 2003 (NSW). There could be multiple choice questions that try to trick you, and they're also great to boost short answer/extended responses and show the marker you actually know your shit. I have a document with all the legislation we need for pretty much all topics (Hygiene, Safety and Working in the Industry) which I'll upload to the Notes section of ATAR Notes soon if you're keen  :)

In terms of resources, I haven't been able to find a lot at all.... all I have is last year's HSC paper and my Trial paper that are specifically Food and Beverage. My understanding is that the questions haven't changed dramatically there is slightly more focus on Food and Beverage stuff (like service, customers etc.) so obviously the older papers are still super valuable. But who knows what they'll do this year, its still quite a new format!

When I meant word by word I meant the specific steps. Would you have to know the steps word by word.

What do you mean by 'specific steps'? Maybe give me an example....  :)

Like for Work Health and Safety Act 2011

1. Protecting workers and other persons against harm to their health, safety and welfare through the elimination or minimization of risks.

Also is the Excel book good to make notes off because I've been doing that.

Moderator edit: Merged double post

What is the best way to do exam revision/last minute study for Vet Hospitality?

I find that its really helpful to go through past exam papers and look at each question and ask yourself "Could I answer that easily" and possibly write down some dot points. If there's a question that you have no idea about then check out your notes and then write a full response to the question.

Useful things to memorise that could come up in an exam could include:
- Legislation (especially Food Act 2003 and Work Health and Safety Act 2011)
- Food contamination bacteria (e.g. listeria, salmonella)
- Role of WorkCover, Safe Work Australia and any other organisations/bodies like that for safety and hygiene

And don't forget to include industry examples in longer responses! This really lifts marks. :)

Hey guys,
I thought I'd bump this old thread, especially considering there's only a month and a half until the HSC exam.

If you have any questions about Hospitality feel free to ask, and I (or someone else) will hopefully give a detailed, helpful answer!!  ;D
