Has anybody on here done it before? Is it interesting? What does it mainly comprise of? :S I see its under the mathematical sciences, is it very math orientated??
-
isn't that for if u want to become a meteorologist or something?
-
yes i did atm1030 and 1020... highly recommended... but thats cause i liked how the lecturer taught the subject. but yeah i was interested in how we get weather and how it all works from the start so eh. yeah its very i would say physics based.
well ill just list what the topics are for atm1030 from last year- weather
-cloud classification
-properties of the atmosphere
-energy
-pressure
-rotation
-wind
-thermodynamics
-cloud microphysics
-air masses& fronts
-ocean swells & tsunamis
-mid latitude weather patterns
-numerical weather predictions
-lightning& thunderstorms & tornadoes
-tropical cyclones
-local circulations
and the tutes were
-contours and maps
-satellite and radar imagery
-mean sea level pressure charts
and labs
-synoptic analysis
-clouds and rain
yeah so that was just atm1030, if u wanna know atm1020 then let me know
-
yay awesome, thanks a lot.
-
People I have met that have done it have almost always enjoyed it :)
I personally do not know much but I would assume they keep it light on maths until the 2nd year, based on how all other uni subjects work :P
-
ah heck might as well post it, cause its right here
atm1020 topics- climate
-global change
-daisyworld: an intro to systems
-global energy balance: the greenhouse effect
-radiative equilibrium with an atmosphere
-atmospheric circulation
-ocean circulation
-current climate patterns
-modelling the atmosphere-ocean system
-carbon cycle
-long term climate regulation
-pleistocene glaciations 1.8mya to present
-short term climate variability
-present day climate variability
-anthropogenic global warming
labs
-daisyworld
-radiation nudget
-the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ)
bucket are you planning on doing ATM ?
-
Ahhh awesome that's helped a heap!
I've put down ATM1030 for semester one. I don't know why but it appeals to me more than the climate unit, I was going to do both but I want to give Astronomy a go as well. :P
Hmm, which of the two units did you enjoy more?
-
i liked atm1030 first semester more than the second... i dunno more interested in weather rather than climate, and like climate million of years ago...i like to know about the present rather than the past in regards to weather... lol atm1020 is good too like u learn bout el nino and all that, ocean circulation was pretty cool but eh atm1030 was better i reckon... do astronomy in second if u want or if it doesn't have prereq but that didn't interest me, might interest u though.... but anyway first start the class and uni! lol oh u might get a different lecturer as well mmm which would suck cause lyle was real good ...
-
i've put down both the atmospheric science units for semester 1 and 2.
to major in ATM, you need to hit the maths subjects pretty hard yeah? take a look at some of the pre-requesites for the 2nd/3rd year ATM units.
-
no u dont need to hit them hard, all u got to do is pass lolz. yeah u need mth1030
-
that means i'd also need: MTH1020 and MTH1010
although i dont think i'd actually need to do MTH1010, but its a pre-req for MTH1020. are uni pre-reqs 100% must dos? or can you get around them.
ie: i'm pretty OK at maths, and have done the methods course, but dropped it right towards the end of year 12. will i be able to talk my way into a unit that requires methods? or no-way-jose
-
yes uni pre-reqs are a must do
ah haha yeah so much maths, but then if you want to do a major in atmospheric science then u have to do it.... u need MTH1010 or VCE maths methods 3&4 avg C in exams... if you didn't complete 3&4 methods i would say there is a very or no chance of talking urself into it because science faculty ppl are stingy lolz. so yeah... u have to do MTH1020 or vce specialist maths to do MTH1030 lolz ... but u dont have to do all of those subjects in first year, u can spread them across the three years if u want or second yr... they just have to be done...
-
Uni prereqs are *not* must dos. I personally have completed a unit I did not meet the prereqs for at the time. You need to get someone from that school to approve it and voila. Of course its very circumstantial as to how important the prereq is, if you plan on actually doing the prereq at some stage, your capacity to do well etc. The people in the science advanced/science scholar programs avoid prereqs all the time :P
However you would pretty much need to do MTH1010 if you want to do MTH1020. If you really want to do maths then you could probably ask and be able to do both of them in semester 1 to catch up, but otherwise I don't forsee yourself escaping that one.
-
the thing is, i dont need to do MTH1010.. because i have actually done Methods units1/2/3/4.. i just dont have a study score to prove it. thus doing MTH1010.. 'an intro to algebra basically' is useless. so im assuming once i speak to a course adviser or something, i'd be fine to get into MTH1020.
also guys.. i dont understand how you can fit in all these subjects???
at the moment, my unit selectiion is:
Semester1
- the compulsary Environment subject
- Easy chem (course requirement)
- whatever math subject i do.. probably SCI1020 (course recommendation)
- ATM1010
Sem2
- the compulsary Environment subject
- Biology (course requirement)
- ESC1022.. a geoscience unit
- ATM 1020
where do you get the room to do all these other units, and meet prerequisites?? it just seems that theres [==================] that many things you have to do, and [=======] that amount of space to do them
-
Talk to someone when you enrol (if you havent already, if you have call up the faculty to organise a time to come talk to someone). I can't say whether it will be fine or not but go see.
I think you're a bit confused about what you need to fit in. See http://www.sci.monash.edu.au/undergrad/progamstudy/pleorthree.html You need to have a maths subject out of whatever's listed, and then go for option 1. It's simply picking 3 sequences so people don't go mental and do one of everything and then realise they don't actually meet prereqs for any 2nd year unit. Don't worry about that physical earth life science crap. You just need to essentially choose 3 subjects, and make sure you meet the maths requirement as well
(doing MTH1020 in 1st and then MTH1030 in 2nd semester will cover the maths requirement)
You can even do something like this and it meets all your requirements:
Sem 1
MTH1020
ATM1010
other science sequence (ie ASP1011 I am not plugging anything)
random arts unit
Sem 2
MTH1030
ATM1020
other science sequence (ie ASP1022 I am still not plugging, it is merely alphabetically first)
random arts (or other faculty even :P) unit
I hope some of this has made sense

ah yes, i see what you're saying. however i am doing a Bachelor of Environmental.sci @ monash, not B.sci
The course requirements are:
the two ENV units (compulsary)
6 points of: Biology, chemistry, maths and physics (which i'll do in 2nd year)
12 points of other (ATM units + geoscience unit for me)
edit: and for the record, i dont even know what i'm asking lol. it just seems once i've done all the course requirements, it leaves me 2 or 3 maths subjects i have to do to do 2nd year ATM units... which i cant fit in
-
why can't u substitute the sci1020 (which i have done is and is the easiest math unit around hands down, and i did methods lolz) in first yr with mth1020? and do mth1030 in second yr or something..
-
On Allocate+ for ATM1030 it shows the staff as Lyle Pakula. Is this the lecturer you said was good TrueLight? And does this mean I get him? :P
-
im hoping to do this subject as well, hopefully ill see some of u guys @ monash this year.
-

ou really he's doing it again, lucky you.. yeah hes great.. well for me lol and he not old like most other of my lecturers... yeah if it says on there then i would say u are getting him
-
ah to the guys doing atm1030 i just skimmed over the lecture and its NOT lyle!!!! thats sad for you guys he was so good, his voice sounds a bit boring lol .... ah well how u finding it?
-
uhm yeah......the guy we have is so boring.
-
lol awww i feel sry for u... hmmm whos ur tutor?
-
WELL...i actually accidently missed my lab this week.
1.5 hours in traffic lol and then i couldn't find the class... they weren't in the room that my timetable said.
-
LOL thats ok i think its usually a tute so thats ok .. now ur going to be turned off by weather and stuff cause of him......ah lol is he doing it structured like the topics i wrote somewhere here?
-
well i dont know what he's doing actually...he's been talking about fire...and showing us pointless videos and animations that nobody understands.
I havent really learned anything yet, and i don't have the textbook so hmm...
-
OMG wow he must be a really crap lecturer >.< from last yr to this yr... what have they done!
oh and the book isnt that good as well... but i guess ull need it with him... we had really good lecture notes lst yr....still got them somewhere lolz
-
this is so no fair lol :(
-
nope its not.... the perils of a bad lecturer in uni....ah.... i was probably psyching you out and then it turns to crap lol.... although lyle did mention at the end of last yr he might or might not leave cause he wants to do something else with more money and like research and stuff.... oh well there goes a great lecturer... but i reckon he was getting paid like 80k a yr lol
-
well i dont know what he's doing actually...he's been talking about fire...and showing us pointless videos and animations that nobody understands.
I havent really learned anything yet, and i don't have the textbook so hmm...
yea, and we haven't really been given any specific reading (as far as i know), so it's kinda hard to know what we're doing
-
bucket who r u?, im in the same lecture,
i dont think we had a lab last week cos it was first week.
-
Hello, is anyone else having trouble with the lab report, that we basically received no explanation for?
-
lolyes its gay
-
yes i did atm1030 and 1020... highly recommended... but thats cause i liked how the lecturer taught the subject...
I had a calculus 2 lecturer that was really good with how he taught the content! Everything hade literally stayed in my mind and it still is! He teaches 'Group Theory and Linear Algebra' which I could do next year if I decide to major in pure maths or applied maths. Sorry that this is off what this thread is about, but, I just wanted to put in my 2 cents of how a really good lecturer lifts up your performance in a subject!

for anyone wanting to do or interested in atmospheric science
the Australian Bureau of Meteorology has a module that teaches you the basics including these concepts:
-The geographic features that contribute to Australia's unique weather and climate
How the sun's energy drives the large-scale motion of the atmosphere
-The concepts of 'air masses' and 'fronts'
-How atmospheric pressure and air flow are linked
-Cloud formation and rainfall
-Severe weather events such as thunderstorms, tornadoes and tropical cyclones
-How satellites and radars monitor the weather
-How the 'daily weather map' is constructed
-How computers predict 'future weather maps'
-The natural limits to our ability to forecast weather
-The importance of local knowledge in interpreting weather maps and forecasts
-How you can find the latest weather information on the Bureau's web site, and make a simple forecast.
