cns1511: Hoping for 35+
UprightMan: Hoping for 45+, ideally 50
Jackinthepatch - Hoping for 45+

Once my school gets subject changes in order i'll be doing it. They are SO slow! I put in my form almost a week ago!

Hoping for 33+, nothing really special. But might expect less or more once I get to know the course content more in depth.

^ Decided on doing another English after all Damo? Would have been so cool to cruise through year 12 with only maths subjects.

Well ex-English Language taker reporting in.

Yeah, hated normal English and got 30 with very little work. Basically put it there to either bump up my ENTER with it in my top 4 if I get a good score or it'll be it me bottom two. I guess it was that smartest choice ENTER wise.

Hoping for 35+, not sure if I'll get close though.

I'm shooting for the skies...45+...ideally 50 =p

@Damo17: I'm pretty sure they don't let you pass VCE without an English subject?  ELang's sounds like it fits you like a glove anyway.  Are you finding it interesting?  I'm having the time of my life lol ... though the next time someone in my class asks the teacher what the hell a verb is I think I'll punch a wall.

I already did mainstream English last year and got 30. I haven't been in any class yet but have done a little from the book and I have to say that it IS REALLY much more interesting that mainstream. I wounder why not many people do eng lang.

Oh I see...

I agree with you; I saw my bro do mainstream English and although I'm decent with that stuff, it looked damn repetitive to the things I've been doing since year 8 'cept in depth and once I read the English Language description, I fell in love XD.  From what I gathered with many people who picked mainstream or literature, they were either:
-scared off by the description
-thought that they would play it safe with mainstream
-weren't properly informed
-made a poor/rushed decision

I have a few friends, who, after reading what I'm studying are kicking themselves for picking literature/mainstream over language and in my opinion, so they should.

I'm doing it. Ideal score - 45+.
It's so much better than normal English.

Language pwns mainstream. I did both last year for some crazy reason >.<

Ideal score, 48+, preferably 50. =] But in terms of achievable, I'd say only 43+.

off topic, sorry:

My school doesn't offer it, is it harder than normal english?

Depends on your strengths really. But I would say on a whole it is a bit harder than normal English. Anyone care to agree/disagree?

I agree; most of the mainstream stuff is the stuff you've been doing for years (hopefully) and thus you should be very comfortable with it.  From what I saw my brother do, you've gotta dig a bit deeper but English Language is almost an entirely different ball game.  A bit harder, but easily taken in one's stride particularly if you're a logic/analysis sort of person (i.e. a math-type), in my opinion.

Yay for EngLang! I'm aiming for a 47+, but I guess my ultimate goal this year is to develop my understanding of sociolinguistics and enhance my written communication skills.

How many people here are also studying Lit/English?

Doing English Language this year as well.  Hoping for 45+.

Anyway, what are you doing in class right now?  In my class it feels like we're heading in no direction...

Uhh, my class is revising over last year...it's kind of really irritating me.  Stuff we spent the whole of last year talking over...and they forgot ALL of it over a few weeks.  Kind of depressing stuff...hopefully they'll get the gist of it again, cos we're just about to start AOS 3, and I swear, if someone asks the teacher what an adjective is, or the like, I will have to strangle something.

Oi. What's an adjective?

Lol naa I know what you mean, and I agree.

We've had so much English Language homework... particularly regarding the Australian accent. I had to do a presentation on the General Australian accent.
What I've found is that books are far better resources than the internet when it comes to English Language, and its best to get Australian authors. I could barely find anything on the General Australian accent online beyond a simple definition.
My class is using The Cambridge Encyclopedia of English Language - Crystal, Mastering Advanced English Language - Thorne, and Insight Guide to English Language. We also watched Sounds of Aus DVD.

Omg.  We did exactly the same thing for the past week.  Other than that, we've only covered Australian English (the accent, slang and pronunciation).  Before that for some reason, we did Teen speak as well.

I'm using Mastering Advanced English Language - Thorne, and Heinemann English Language Units 3+4 - Taunt.

Yeah we did teen speak as well, but I haven't seen it in the textbook or anything...? We don't go to the same school do we? Lol.

My class has just been revising from last year and working on Australian accent/pronunciation, etc, as well as the influences that have effected AE. We've had to write a few essays already.

We don't have a textbook, however, the teacher brings in resources for us to use.

It's not in the textbooks that we use.  Instead, we had to do several interviews with at least two people - one person who is older than teen speakers and one person who is a teen speaker.  We had to do the interviews as evidence for the essay we had to write.

Post by: appianway on February 16, 2009, 04:39:12 pm
Hmm, I would've thought you'd have needed more than one interview with a representative from each demographic. After all, there's a myriad of social factors that affect language, so it'd be difficult to discern whether speech patterns in your individual were specific to the teenage group or a separate subculture.

We're just revising metalanguage at the moment.
Title: Re: English Language 2009 Roll call!
Post by: Gloamglozer on February 16, 2009, 04:50:24 pm
Yes, that's what we had to mention in our essay - the interview that we conducted was just a representative of the sub-group of teen speakers.

After all, it wasn't a SAC.  Just a little task to give the teacher an indication of where we are at.

From these replies, looks like a few people are revising as well.  It's good to know we're not the only ones doing revision.  :D

Thank god revision is over...my irritation has no grounds on which to feed now...Though I must say, the revision diagnostic test wasn't all to impressive when looked upon at a class scale >,<".  At any rate, it gives me more incentive to work harder.

Just started AOS 1; watching the Sounds of Aus DVD next class!  Glad that the learning will commence...hopefully.

I'm pretty sure it is.  However, I'm 100% sure it is compulsory if you want to complete the VCE.

It can't be that bad! The average mark for our school's metalanguage quiz hovered somewhere around 40%. It could have been indicative of the difficulty of the test though; our school typically does very well in English Language... last year, approximately 60% of students attained study scores of over 40!

60%?! Shit. Which school would that be? Our school would be lucky to get 10% above 40.

Mind you, this is only the first year our school will be doing 3/4 English Language lol.

Well, if you look at the distribution of study scores over 40 for English Language last year, it'll become quiteee obvious which one.

My teacher handed around a list of all of the 40+ scores on our very first lesson. It was somewhat intimidating.
