A network protocol determines the type of error checking used, the data compression method, how the sending device will indicate that it has finished sending a message, and how the receiving device will indicate that it has received a message.

I don't think they'll ever ask technical stuff like this on the exam. IT Apps hardly goes into technical details. I don't think even topologies can be examined in 3/4

Yeah, they'll never ask a question like this on the ITA exam - on the SD, maybe.

Topologies probably won't be examined on the exam (it depends on how you interpret the dot point "an overview of types and characteristics of networks") but I think you should learn about them anyway.
