Lawyers call it The Zoo - not with affection. There is little cute or endangered about the people in the waiting area at Parramatta Children's Court.
Families form intimate groups. For some it is a day out.
The saddest sights are the ones who turn up alone.
There's one. It is gut-wrenching. He is sitting on the carpet, back against the wall, head down. Where are his mum and dad?
One girl who looks barely 12 but has just turned 16 is nursing her five-month-old baby. Her boyfriend, the baby's father, was picked up this morning for breaching his curfew and he is in the cells. He smiles as he gets bail.
The 16-year-old Islander is having a bad day. He has breached bail for the second time.
His soon-to-be ex-girlfriend has had a baby but he has found out he is not the father.
He wants bail but all he has for surety is $50 in a bank account. Or he thinks he has. His mother may have spent it. Bail refused.
But the defendants are no less stupid. Some have been caught stealing their lawyers' mobile phones right there in the court while the lawyer is telling the court that their client is no thief.
So sad...
