Region: South Yarra
Grade: A
Win Rate: twice in four years
Noted for: people thinking i'm a good debater until they see me debate
anyone else?
-
Haha, I'm in the Toorak or South Yarra division next year in A Grade. My team made octofinals twice, although we ended up losing to the same Scotch team both times...

Scotch's '09 team was pretty strong. '10ers are gonna suck.
-
Said '10er team which beat us twice won the whole thing in 2008 and made semi-finals in 2009. :p
-
Didn't this years Scotch B grade team contain 2 State Swannies?
-
I think I know one or two people on said Scotch team...
-
In Year 8, I was in Hawthorn, D-Grade.
Last year, I changed schools and moved to South Yarra, and our team won the D-Grade of that region, and got into the finals series.
This year, I'm back in Hawthorn, but C-Grade :)
-
B-Grade, I think it's Camberwell division
Our team is gonna be kickass :D
-
Gunning for the octos this year.
Last year we were robbed in the round of 16, everyone in the room including opposing team and opposing team's supporters thought we had won.
The adjudicator was like, i award this to the affirmative team and some dude on the other team was like 'lolwut? arent we the affirm team?!'
-
South Yarra division again this year at A-Grade...time to get our ass kicked by MHS/MacRob. >.>
-
Yea I am in A parade team we look pretty decent wouldn't have a clue of debating but the topics are pretty good for me never debated before
-

LOL MGGS moved to Hawthorn this year. The A-Grade MacRob team that got into the grand finals last year was sensational.
Although, we have the D-Grade state champions from last year in our region, so we could possibly lose the finals series if we get them in power-paired.

Yeah, I heard. Something to do with your debating captain not being able to make the days set out. :p
-
If only my school would move orchestra due to the music captain not being able to make the previous rehearsal time...
Oh, and last year's A Grade was astounding. 2 brilliant speakers.
-

Hahaha ;)
That'd never happen at my school...
-
Anyone doing Viewpoint this weekend?
-
Lol, at least you did better than us - we got knocked out in the second playoff. :(
-
what are people thinking of this upcoming topic?
'That we should set a maximum wage of $1 million for corporate executives'
-
hey TT, c'mon that's hardly fair, Two of the A1's this year are in the state squad, and two guys in year 11 last year got swannies and were nominated for state swannies (one of them in the state squad now). How was last year any better?
Wow, that's really good :) Do you reckon this years Scotch A1s are better than last years then?
-

TT's just mean. :) And no wonder they beat us...twice. >.>;; Does Scotch "rank" their debating teams?
Also, hi Tram, if you're the one I think you are. It's Vincent, the guy who randomly crashed UMEP. :p
-

Not sure if i can anwser that question unbiasedly cos i'm actually in the A2 team (yes we do rank our teams vincent) and we kinda have a but or rivalry going between our two teams. like....in year nine we made it to the quarter finals then were to totally robbed (we lost in a split decision) and they only made it to the octos and ever sonce then they've had the upper hand e.g. WINNING the grand final in year 10 and last year they made it to the semis-i believe vincent was complaining about them
despite this they are admittedly pretty good and should do well this year (but not better than our team :P) We're got one of the swannies (me ;)) and they've got the other so the rivalry is still going strong this year
and hey vincent, yea i've seen you at Dr He twice btw, once when you crashed the challenge class and once when i changed to the saturday arvo class. U gonna come visit UMEP maths any time soon?
and how did u manage to remember me btw? And i got ur fb add but i've actually goven up fb! so don't be offended if i don't accept you;)
-
Well done on the Swannie :) Only 1-2 teams get into the finals series from each grade in each region, right? If our C1s verse your C1s, (that won the D grade grand final last year) in the power-paired, we're screwed for getting into the finals, even just the play-offs. :( We should've stayed in South Yarra :D

just check the draw, see if ur against the Scotch 1 team. Yea they're actually pretty good, they're really, REALLY intense about debating, not surprised thay won last year. Which MGGS team are you?
And i've see ur've taken my advice about physics Azure:) Well insofar that u've changed the subjects in your signature, which we all know is a legally binding contract to VCAA ;)

I'm in MGGS C1 this year - was in C2 last year, but since we were the only team that got into the finals series in my entire school, then we got moved to C1 :) Yeah, I've watched the Scotch C1 team debate (as D1 last year) in the grand final - they were really good, surprised none of them got a swannie! I also watched the A-Grade grand final - that was just amazing... especially the Macrobbie in the state team.
We're not against C1 in the draw, we're against C2 in the secret topic, but if we do get to 4/4 then we might debate against C1, which will probably be an epic disaster because they're so good.

Ahhh...MGS is similar (except we don't explicitly rank our teams, although the one named MGS1 usually seems like it's the best one for whatever reason...). Our top two A-Grade teams this year also sound like your top two (xD); my one (MGS1) has the debating captain (me >.>) and has two Octofinals under its belt, whereas the other one (MGS2) has a Swannie (also vice captain of debating, haha) and a near-miss from the playoffs every year (usually ranked 2nd in the draw, although we've never debated against them).
And yeah, I keep changing Dr. He classes around. Gonna drop it next term though. =/ And I'll drop in on your UMEP class when I have time again - I have rehearsal at MGGS from 3:45 now until May xD. I remember you because I'm good with remembering pro people's names. ^_~

The Wiz? It has so many rehearsals - 5 hours a week, I believe? Looking forward to watching it though :) Same, I'm probably dropping Dr He next term. Are any of you doing viewpoint tomorrow?
-
Nope. Got a rehearsal for the upcoming concert...I'm a soloist, so I have to be there obv. >.>
-
Same, I'm probably dropping Dr He next term.
LOL why? Dr He is great, not particularly time-consuming either (I do the homework the night before or the afternoon before the lesson :P)
-

A couple of debaters in the Scotch A3 team are better speakers than anyone in A1 or A2. they choose to not debate A1, even though they were asked to. The teams aren't really ranked, you choose who you debate with.
-
You guys seem to have the best debaters in almost every grade every year... must have good coaches lol
Didn't debate last night but we won against Ruyton :) Our team's quite large this year so I'm debating the secret and advised topics :)
-
lol, yea...how'd u go last night azure?

Nice, we won as well, was in my first ever definitional debate :S We we aff, the other team challenged our definition.
Don't ever get into one if you can help it. I was 2nd aff and spent the entire time working how to shut down their definiton and JUST managed to get some "even if" rebuttal in.

Thanks, well done to you too! :) My first definitional debate was in the finals series play-off 2 last year. It was horrible and as my team had never experienced it before, we essentially screwed it up and lost the debate... it'll be better this year though. Btw, are you Josh's brother?
-
@ Azure: Ah well, just take it out this year, the experience is good. And how do you know my bro?
-

Probably not going to make it into the finals with your C1s in the mix... unless more than one team per grade in a region can qualify.
-
mmm, i remember they had a pretty crap topic tho, do you remember what it was Evangelion?
-

Not sure @ the topic, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were disadvantaged.
-
I think all you guys have demonstrated is how poor your own debating skills are :P You're having this massive penis-waving competition... over the debating skills of OTHER people. Who cares? I don't think this thread serves any useful purpose, and is just one big catfight. This thread is now locked for good. Cheers.

The South Yarra draw came out - I've got Melbourne High 1, Melbourne High 2, MacRob 1 and MacRob 2. Time to lose an entire season...xD

Ours is tomorrow (Camberwell division)
Topic: "That police should not carry guns on the beat", negative

We (CGS 2) won by one point, not a particularly interesting debate...

I know! We should have one by more (especially if our third speaker didn't ramble for 11.5 minutes - good speech mind you :D)
-
you only get scored properly in the finals i find lol.
we smash teams and only win by a point or two max. but last year in a final we won by like 4 which was a well deserved win and we actually felt rewarded

Yeah, I agree
Oh and congrats :)

Oh, a Melbourne High year 9 team lost by something like 10 points in their first debate 3 years ago.
Then again, they did propose something like building a pipeline from Queensland to Melbourne to relieve the drought.

LOL, that is indeed a poor effort!
In our house debating comp, there was a margin of 32 points in one debate! :D

Wow, poor effort indeed.
I've only heard of 72 the lowest and 78 the highest. Even that wouldn't give more than a margin of 18 which I have never seen before! Out of the 4 debates my team have been in or viewpoint, three of them had a margin of 1. LOL
-
In our house debating comp, there was one debate where the margin was 100. Not even joking...>.>

Did you have the marking scheme where marks range from 0-100? Because that's what we had and people could get 40s and 96s...
That would never. ever. happen in DAV.

Haha of course, of course. To be fair, you get really poor quality debates in house debating too...-cough-

You get poor quality debates pretty much anywhere... including DAV regionals and DEFINITELY house debating LOL. But most teams in the DAV finals series and Viewpoint etc... are pretty decent, some are exceptional.

OMG we lost to St Margaret's by only one point in the prelims and they won viewpoint :O
St Margaret's wins debating series
April 19, 2010
St Margaret's school has won the Viewpoint 2010 economics debate. The Berwick school went head-to-head with Scotch College in the final at Monash University on Friday.
The teams debated whether Australia should accept economic refugees.
“As the people who will bear the future consequences of policy implemented by government this debate made us more aware of the issue and gave us a much broader knowledge of the refugee issue and the social and economic implications of accepting economic refugees to Australia,” Rebecca Irvine, captain of the winning team explained.
During the debating series, organised by the university's faculty of business and economics, 21 schools from across Victoria challenged each other on a range of topics, from whether we should set and enforce a maximum 35 hour working week, to whether the developing world should give prioity to development over the environment.
The series aims to encourage students to develop public speaking skills and an appreciation of economics.
Adjudicators for the debates were provided by the Debaters Association of Victoria, supported by the Monash Association of Debaters.
-
I was in a team that lost to MacRob in an "enviro-week" debate by 22 points haha
-
you want a fuckked up dav story? last round my bro was in a debate in which only one person scored below 80. On his side the scores were 84, 80, 79 and they won by only one point..... heloooooo swannie :P
-
^ That's pretty good! :)
Anyone knows when the results for state finals are out? :D
They won't be out until all regions have finished their round 5.
Dates are:
* Playoff 1 - Wed Aug 11 (Sacred Heart Girls College, Oakleigh)
* Playoff 2 - Wed Aug 18 (Northcote High School)
* Octofinals - Wed Aug 25 (St Michael's Grammar School, St Kilda)
* Quarter finals - Wed Sep 1 (Simonds Catholic College, West Melbourne)
* Semi-finals - Wed Oct 13 (Ruyton Girls School, Kew)
* Grand Final - Thurs Oct 21 (Caulfield Grammar School, Caulfield Campus)
Have you won all your debates?
-
We (CGS 2) just missed out, came second or third on the ladder :(
-
Aww, my school's pathetic. We only have MWSC 1. lol
(Major understatement)
Lol, we have six teams in our league, total domination :P
-
Usually, you need to win all 5 rounds to be in the play-offs - if you are equally ranked with another few teams with 5 wins, then you all go to the playoffs.
-
30 people in all?! Haha, sometimes we could barely fill up to five.
(Does your school rank teams?)
Something like that :P
No, there's no ranking, most teams have at least one good person (we choose teams ourselves, so it's by friends, not skill)
-
Usually, you need to win all 5 rounds to be in the play-offs - if you are equally ranked with another few teams with 5 wins, then you all go to the playoffs.
Not necessarily true - we've made play-offs before with four wins, when nobody in the region was undefeated.
-
Into finals third year in a row. every year we make it a round further. Last year we were knocked out by glen waverly (i think) in a contentious debate where everyone in the room except the adjudicator thought we had convincingly won.
Also, our regional debates are always awarded by only one point, its pretty redicilous. Although for the first time ever we won a debate by 3 points tihs year. but yeah, the adjucation in my region is very average haha

Yeah, so did we. I reckon my region isn't very strong/competitive to begin with.
Yeah, "usually" because the regions we are in are usually quite strong.
