Title: Can your eyes get better?
Post by: Studyinghard on January 22, 2010, 01:47:57 pm
Any eye experts in here 8-)?

I had my eyes tested around 2 years ago and it showed that I was short sighted and had a reading of -1.75 in my right eye and -2.0 in left eye and today went for another check which showed that my eye sight had become better by 0.5 on both eyes.

Is that even possible?

Dunno, maybe they made a mistake in one (or both) of the tests?

It can improve? hm didn't know about that. I guess there could have been little things that could have changed the outcome anyway because on the day of my first testing I was playing games right before I went for the test :P but today I went out into the sunlight and sort "cleared" my eyes up but I didnt think it would make that much of a difference

Yeah I find that after going out in the sunlight (without glasses) or in the pool, my eyesight actually gets better. I don't know if short-sightedness can actually "get better" in any way (mine's just gone worse), but I've heard of a lot of people having pseudomyopia, where you go suddenly short-sighted but it isn't really short-sightedness. Have a read of: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pseudomyopia

Short-sightedness almost always improves, and long-sightedness gets worse.

Are you sure? I might have some chances in the future to improve my eyes then! :D

But by personal experience up to this stage, my eyes have gone from -0.5 on both eyes to nearly -2.0.

Yeah same with my cousin. He went from -1.75 in both eyes to -2.75. Although at the time we both used to play the same game but then right after I found out about my eye sight I stopped playing from that very moment but he kept playing so maybe that had something to do with it?

Yeah, I guess it has. But sticking my eyes in front of the computer is compulsory for me...my school's a computer-based school...:(

Maybe I should stop using my laptop for a while. Maybe my eyes might get better that way.

Well actually its not that I stopped using the computer but just stopped playing games for around a year which I supposed help a lot. I dont know maybe the optometrist got the check up wrong but does that happen often :S?

I still use the computer every day though but not for like hours on end.

On a slightly different note, isn't short sightedness hereditary?

My left eye went from -3.75 to -3.00

Right eye didn't change though (-3.50)

Yeah, in most cases. If you're mother or father's short-sighted, good chance you will be. But its confusing, cos the doctor said I probably got it from my grandma. Complicated genetics....><

I've been shortsighted since I was 6, and it's gotten significantly worse over the years, although the degree to which it has has lessened as I've gotten older (apparently because I've stopped growing). I wish my eyes could improve, but I doubt it's ever going to happen!

if you've got a spare $5000 (or can pay off an interest free loan) I highly recommend checking out laser eye surgery. Best thing EVER.

Short-sightedness almost always improves, and long-sightedness gets worse.

Actually... when I asked my optometrist whether my eyesight would get better or worse, she said it would most likely get worse... I have myopia (short-sightedness) that onset during VCE... no doubt due to the countless hours I spent reading, writing and using the computer.

Edit: Just before anyone who knows me in RL gets in first... no, I don't wear my glasses often... usually only in lectures and when driving.

I like my new glasses =D

But an improvement in eyesight would be brilliant.

I hate contacts, just starting to wear them. They hurt my eyes :(

Theres no way it would possibly get better...unless you somehow unstretched your eye balls, infact it gets worse untill your about 20 because your eyes are still growing

Oh, that's not the issue... I'm just too clumsy and for some reason I find that my glasses screw with my depth perception.

What is it like height? keeps growing until your 20?

well I dont think its impossible otherwise how would I get a prescription for it? I mean wouldnt the optometrist like keep testing until she found the same or a bigger number

Yep, it sort of is. Your eyes don't "solidify" until you're around 20. That's why, in a general trend, people with short-sightedness when they're young often get worse very fast over the "growing period" that is puberty, and once you stop growing and stuff, then the short-sightedness more often than not steadies out.

And short-sightedness can definitely go better, no argument about that. My cousin inherited short-sightedness from both my aunt and uncle, and it got worse and worse as time went on. But after a holiday during which she used little or no technology, her short-sightedness got better around 0.5 degrees.

Yes, if you get more than one letter wrong during the eye test at VicRoads, you will need to wear glasses when driving.

My eyes aren't *that* bad and I only got one letter wrong... like... I think I thought it was an O and it was actually a Q or something.
Anywayz, for me it's not compulsory to wear glasses while driving, I just usually prefer to.

Yay i just came back from a 3 week holiday. I think my eyes may have improved because i found i didnt need to use my glasses as often even though i only really wear them when watching tv or computer. But i wear them just in case. :)
