I'd say it depends on the subject. If you know your content well, then you don't need a tutor. You might benefit from a tutor in English though to get ideas flowing... I know that I'd hate having an English tutor, but it seems to help a lot of people.

By the way things look you are struggling with English (Look at my english SS, I was too). So I would recomend getting a English tutor because you could end up aiming for say 36 in English.

If I knew you could get a tutor for $25 per week (I thought it was like $50 - $60 per hour) I would have got a tutor.

I only ever had a tutor for year 11 English and it helped a lot. Start of that year I was averaging C's with one D+. After tutoring, my average went up to about a B+ with a couple of A+'s in essays and a B for my year 11 exam. Though I didn't use my tutor in year 12, what they taught me helped a lot and my overall marks for English were A's for SACs and a B+ for the exam giving me 35. Without the tutor, I possibly could've been looking at a sub 30 score which I wouldn't have been happy about

This, for me lol. I know I shouldn't be relying too heavily on my tutor but often when I'm hard pressed to form my own opinion on something, my tutor will ask me certain questions to try and help me out, and share her ideas if I'm really stumped.

Obviously it isn't good to let/expect your tutor to spoon feed you and I know people whose reasons for dropping their tutors in year 12 were because they "became too reliant on them" and they felt that "it's better to learn things yourself instead of expecting everything handed to you." You can definitely go well without a tutor but if you're seriously struggling with a subject/your school teacher is totally incompetent and you haven't learnt anything from them, get a tutor.

Some can, but it really depends on the teacher.
If you are motivated enough to write heaps of essays, then you can probably do without a tutor :P

I was only giving suggestions to annahinh because she's not allowed a tutor, I reckon a tutor is definitely better :D

Didn't have tuition for my highest study scores - if you push yourself, you can definitely do well.

Don't worry, your not the only one  who is in that position.
I guess the best advise i can give you for English is to write up essays each week and give it to your teacher ( or may be another teacher) to correct.
And with your other subjects, try to be an independent learner, and if you need help approach your teacher during your free's or ask a friend or so.
39 for methods without a tutor i would say a job well done.

Don't just hand it to your English class teacher, get OTHER teachers and peers to correct it. From my very limited 3-week experience, just handing it to your English teacher garners you nowhere near enough feedback.

Yes, unless you can get your english teacher to correct essays that you write by yourself :D

This is why I loved my English teacher.

Best thing to do I reckon is that if you think you need a tutor for a particular subject, try one for a week or two, and if you don't think it's helping or you think it's a waste of time, just stop. This is what I did with my English tutor at the beginning of last year (expect I thought she was sort of helping, so instead of two weeks of tutoring it ended up being something like 2 months..total waste of time btw). I never thought I needed a tutor for maths or physics so I didn't get one. If you think you have a firm understanding of the subject, a tutor won't do much IMO.
