Post by: /0 on March 04, 2010, 05:35:56 pm
I'm practicing a chopin ballade atm, the same one that was played at the end of The Pianist
It's a nice piece, but I hate the octaves

Is that one Ballade No. 1?
I thought the piece at the end of The Pianist was Grande Polonaise Brillante at the credits.

Quote
The piano piece heard at the end of the film, played with an orchestra, is Chopin's Grande Polonaise brillante, Op. 22.

This movie is quite strange, not too bad though
I like the music in it! :D

I've seen Ron at piano comps and yeah of course I've seen Max play too! I went to the '09 Foundation Day Concert and Ron Ho played the Rach 2 (3rd movement), my favourite concerto! I also loved the one Max played at YPA - Tchaik 1... the second movement is heavenly. Both of them are amazing.
I'm not that good at piano, I passed my Amus in year 8, and now I don't even do lessons anymore cos I'm almost in VCE...

Because playing the Bruch in 5ths before rehearsal whilst laughing at everyone's disgusted reactions doesn't count as a concerto.

Hmm, let's bring some double violin music to MYO :)

I had him for like 6th grade, he's a super tight-ass I've heard (don't quote me on that)
I think I had John Quaine and some other piano guy (on the national board) for my violin LMusA

John Quaine was the replacement for Fintan in my LMus, supposedly Fintan couldn't make it.
I'm soooooo glad that happened, I definitely would have failed if Fintan was examining me

It's quite annoying, because even at my old school we had a concerto evening, but I might try and get a chamber music concert or a concerto concert up and running. If I have time to organise it with the MHS music captains...

Empty Chairs at Empty Tables.  I think my teacher wanted me to do a song from Rigoletto (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCFEk6Y8TmM), but I was too stubborn.  >.>

And yeah, we usually have a song or two at our Concerto Concerts.  Last year, we had two arias (one from The Marriage of Figaro, can't remember the other).

Concerto Concert is in September, haha (aaaages away).  Off the top of my head, last year we had:

Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto Movement 1 (Daniel Le)
Chopin Piano Concerto 1 Movement 1 (Kevin Kanisius)
Rachmaninov Piano Concerto 3 Movement 1 (Henry Wei)
Saint-Saens Morceau du Concerto for Horn+Orchestra
Mozart Clarinet Concerto Movement 1
Shostakovich Piano Concerto 2 Movement 2
Schreiner The Worried Drummer (AWESOME percussion concerto >.>)
Aforementioned aria from Marriage of Figaro
Another aria which escapes my mind (Phoebe Russell's brother!)
A timpani concerto which escapes my mind...
A flute concerto which escapes my mind...
A cello concerto which escapes my mind...
A trumpet concerto which escapes my mind...

We went a bit overboard with having three 20 minute piano concertos last year, though, given that we only had a term to rehearse.  Managed to pull them off in the end, but only barely (we literally played through the Tchaikovsky only once in its entirety before the concert)...

I need to know more pianists...

The closest I'm going to get to playing a concerto this year at school is Tango Ballet. I guess in strings we usually do some concertos though - we did this arrangement of a Vivaldi concert (which wasn't arranged) going into Black Dog last year, and in year 10 I played spring. Out of all of the seasons, my teacher had to choose spring... *sigh*

LOL, I've (sort-of) been offered a spot for next year, so I'd like to take up the May concert (our September concert is too close to VCE IMO)
I'm tossing up a few options, but they have to be easy for the orch :P

daniel le, same teacher as ruben lipohar and max foster.... apparently rita riechman the child "prodigy" of australia...

Indeed! =)  Reuben also went to MGS (as well as his younger brother, Richard Lipohar, who was a violin player instead...).

Just out of interest, do you know who his teacher is?

Assuming you mean Reuben Chen, his teacher's the same as mine, Alison :)

That's an amazing programme! (I love the Tchaik, Chopin and Rach!).
Is the flute concerto:
Concertino Op 107 - Chaminade
Mozart Flute Conc (No 1 or 2)
Ibert Flute Concerto
Prokofiev Flute Concerto
^ any of those?

Grrr I don't like Rita Reichmann >:[

What happened to Reuben? He was doing arts/law in my year... then he disappeared, apparently to London to study music... then I never heard anything about him again... o.O

The closest I'm going to get to playing a concerto this year at school is Tango Ballet.

LOL TANGO BALLET that's a funny name

Mark Mogilevsky (spelling?).  He has another student at MGS on music scholarship as well right now (Willard Zhong).

Ahh, I've never heard of Reuben Lipohar :( Who is he, does he go to grammar too?
Chaminade was the piece that got me into flute - when I heard it, I was like WHOA those runs are sooo fast! But now my favourite flute pieces are Fantasie - Hue and Sonatine - Burton. :)

He was a pro pianist who graduated 2006.  Got 49 and 50 in Solo and Group performance respectively, I believe (not that that's a precise measure of musical talent, but still...).

and ... yamaha piano competition state finalist and national finalist. mark chu beat him the 2 years before haha, i still remember that year so clearly, that was with ron ho and michelle nyugen in the junior division with michelle winning it, and mark and reuben played almost identical pieces (chu was learning from ronald farren price and reuben with stephen mcintyre)  mark played liszt transcendental etude (no 6?) and bach prelude and fugue (forgot no). Reuben played chopin etude no 4 and bach prelude and fugue (no 8 book I).

I love how you remember exactly what every. single. person. played at Yamaha :P

I used to study with Mark Chu's dad, until he got pissed off that I beat his son once in a competition and stopped teaching me properly.

I beat him ONCE. ONCE! Stupid parents living vicariously through children. Pffft.
