Title: Myki and Ticket Inspectors
Post by: costargh on March 10, 2010, 06:48:18 pm
Has anyone had an experience with ticket inspectors and their Myki.

I know that there are plans to have myki readers that ticket inspectors carry around with them but I was under the impression that the technology was not yet available.

If this is the case then is there any way that they can check if your myki is valid? I'm referring to them checking tickets whilst on public transport as opposed to checking at a station. At a station they'd be able to check if they saw you not swiping off etc.

I heard of one person who was asked for a ticket and she showed her myki and they said we cant check that so you're ok.

So what's peoples thoughts?

Probably a good idea although an "I forgot" or "I didn't have time" might get you out of getting a ticket seeing as they're only new.

Wow, I travel via train every day and I haven't seen such a thing - still just the normal "Can I please check your ticket?" ticket inspectors...

I think they'll start checking them more seriously when metcards are phased out.

I agree that some are mean, but some of them are actually quite nice. If they were that desperate for power they wouldn't have given mercy to those who got caught...
Its just a part of their job..

It's not part of their job to have 3 burly men in uniform surrounding an old lady who clearly speaks very little English, loudly demanding to see her cards / know where she is going. I was the only other person in the carriage and luckily I could help translate. Imagine how many other people they've victimised who weren't around someone who just happened to speak their language.

If they wanted to be respected they would stop acting like fuckheads and show a little compassion... you know, like human beings...

problem is im pretty sure they have quotas (or mental issues), so as long as thats the case they will ALWAYS be fuckheads, it just helps them do better in thier job

I would be really scared if that happened to me, let alone an old women.

In Melbourne central when people are caught you always see 3 burly men surrounding the person and it looks so intimidating.

Its a common sense to purchase tickets when you use public transport services. I don't think anyone shall have the right to get away from purchasing a ticket just because he/she is old or doesn't understand the language well. How does a person know the way to a destination without being able to understand how the transport system works? He/she needs to understand a map to the least. If some people suffer from disability or come from a low socio-economic background, the welfare system is there to support them with concession cards, which are very legal.

From what I know, many people, whether old or young, have been taking advantage of the fact that you may get away from being fined if you pretend you did not understand the language.

Actually she DID have a ticket, she just had no idea what the men were yelling at her (it's even harder to understand a language you already have trouble with if you're being yelled at, and you're distressed)

they're wankers
