Title: Punctuation
Post by: GerrySly on February 24, 2009, 08:01:23 pm: How important is punctuation in VCE maths? My spec teacher seems to think that if you don't have the correct punctuation in your solutions and workings out then the whole thing is incorrect or worthy or losing marks.

I think that's a bit excessive, I mean if you have applied the correct methods and attained the correct answer, how can that be worthy of losing marks? Do I really need to get used to using equivalence signs ( $\Longleftrightarrow$ ), therefores ( $\therefore$ ), becauses ( $\because$ ) etc.

Post by: shinny on February 24, 2009, 08:40:19 pm: I'd say excessive and incorrect punctuation is likely to make you lose marks, whilst a lack of mathematical symbols is unlikely to. However, it definitely makes it easier for the examiner to understand your working out if you use the correct stuff. So basically, if you don't know how to use it, then don't do it, although I would advise you to just get in the habit. It definitely makes your own working out neater as well and makes it easier to track down possible errors and such.
