I'm bored, so I was wondering if you guys know what you want to be doing with your life after Uni or whatever.
I have no idea what I'll be doing :D
Hopefully not lining up at Centrelink though.
-
I really hope in 10 years time I could become a successful financial analyst :D
-
not really in 5-10 years time....especially for science lol .... but i will probably be doing something science related, whether that be research or finishing a phd? lol or working in industry ... who knows....
-
Making a difference in the world, whether it be through teaching or by becoming socially proactive.
I also want to get published at some point.
-
Research scientist :)
-
Research scientist :)
in what?
-
Making a substantial change in the world whether it be in the medical sector or engineering designing new stuffs!
or... sitting at a computer desk all day
or... personal training helping combat obesity/unhealthy lifestyles
-
lol thats what everyone says... helping save or change the world... most of the time ur not really doing that in any substantial way unless your really well known and doing something worthwhile
-
russian diplomat? unlikely though
-
Research scientist :)
oooo nice, I'm also interested in which area, mathematics? :P
-
Research scientist :)
in what?
Electromaterials.
-
lol thats what everyone says... helping save or change the world... most of the time ur not really doing that in any substantial way unless your really well known and doing something worthwhile
Doesn't hurt to try... helping even one person can be extremely rewarding

Uni - LOL

Electromaterials.
It seems like you're also interested in material science. :D

well thats different then people should say "helping to change the life of some people" not saying helping to save the 'world'.... haha i just think its unrealistic in most cases ... i just think people need to save themselves if they can
-
no theres obviously people who will help other people but you know people should take responsibility for their own bodies as well

You know how there's three types of volcanoes; Shield, Cinder, Composite - danieltennis is going to be Mount Etna, the composite volcano and the largest and the most eruptive volcano there is in the world. He told God he would be back in a second. Man, it's so hard not to act so reckless. To whom much is given much is tested. Get arrested, guess until he get the message. He feels the pressure, under more scrutiny. And what he do? Act more stupidly. His friends couldn't get through to him. The drama, people suing him. His on VN talkin' like it's just you and him. He's just saying how he feels, man. He ain't one of the Cosby's, he ain't going to hell, man. He guess the money should have changed him. He guess he should have forgot where he came from. Wait 'til he get his money right. Then you can't tell him nothing, right? Excuse me, Were you saying something? Uh uh, you can't tell him nothing. You can't tell him nothing. He's back at reality, sitting there looking at the Sky. He realizes powerful thoughts, would never yield negative thoughts. They say he talks with so much emphasis. Awww, they're so sensitive. Don't ever fix your lips like collagen and then say something where you gonna end up apologin'. Let him know if it's a problem man. Alright man, holla then. Must be the Pharaohs, he is in tune with his soul, So when he buried in a tomb full of gold. Treasure, what's your pleasure? Life is a, uh, depending how you dress her. So if the Devil wear Prada, Adam, Eve wear Nada, he is in between but way more fresher with way less effort. Cause when you try hard is when you die hard. You are all looking like, why God? When they reminisce over you, my God. Man he promise, he is so self conscious. That's why you always see him with at least one of his watches. It seems we are living the American Dream. But the highest up got the lowest esteem. The prettiest people do the ugliest things. For the road to riches and diamond rings. We buy our way out of jail, but we can't buy freedom. We'll buy a lot of clothes when we don't really need them. Things we buy to cover up what's inside. Cause they make us hate our self and love their wealth. He got a couple past due bills, but he won't get specific. He got a problem with spending before he get it. We are self conscious but he was the first to admit it. Man he promise, she's so self conscious. She has no idea what she's doing in university. That major that she majored in don't make no money.
But she won't drop out, her parents will look at her funny, Now, tell me that ain't insecure. The concept of school seems so secure. Words are more treacherous and powerful than we think. Silence is the most powerful scream.

You are wrong.
A woman in Paris was on her way to go shopping, but she had forgotten her coat - went back to get it. When she had gotten her coat, the phone had rung, so she'd stopped to answer it; talked for a couple of minutes. While the woman was on the phone, Daisy was rehearsing for a performance at the Paris Opera House. And while she was rehearsing, the woman, off the phone now, had gone outside to get a taxi. Now a taxi driver had dropped off a fare earlier and had stopped to get a cup of coffee. And all the while, Daisy was rehearsing. And this cab driver, who dropped off the earlier fare; who'd stopped to get the cup of coffee, had picked up the lady who was going to shopping, and had missed getting an earlier cab. The taxi had to stop for a man crossing the street, who had left for work five minutes later than he normally did, because he forgot to set off his alarm. While that man, late for work, was crossing the street, Daisy had finished rehearsing, and was taking a shower. And while Daisy was showering, the taxi was waiting outside a boutique for the woman to pick up a package, which hadn't been wrapped yet, because the girl who was supposed to wrap it had broken up with her boyfriend the night before, and forgot.
When the package was wrapped, the woman, who was back in the cab, was blocked by a delivery truck, all the while Daisy was getting dressed. The delivery truck pulled away and the taxi was able to move, while Daisy, the last to be dressed, waited for one of her friends, who had broken a shoelace. While the taxi was stopped, waiting for a traffic light, Daisy and her friend came out the back of the theater. And if only one thing had happened differently: if that shoelace hadn't broken; or that delivery truck had moved moments earlier; or that package had been wrapped and ready, because the girl hadn't broken up with her boyfriend; or that man had set his alarm and got up five minutes earlier; or that taxi driver hadn't stopped for a cup of coffee; or that woman had remembered her coat, and got into an earlier cab, Daisy and her friend would've crossed the street, and the taxi would've driven by. But life being what it is - a series of intersecting lives and incidents, out of anyone's control - that taxi did not go by, and that driver was momentarily distracted, and that taxi hit Daisy, and her leg was crushed.
In other words, a single person can dramatically change the many lives of others. It's like a chain reaction or the domino effect. One person can change the world.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button?
-
I can give you another example.
There was this year 12 Vietnamese international student under the name of Phuc Dat. His parents had spent thousands and thousands of dollars for his schooling in Australia and had great expectations of their son becoming an aspiring doctor. It was two days before his Specialist Maths Exam 2 and he felt the pressure, after performing poorly in his ESL exam. Knowing that Specialist Maths is the only subject that scales over 50, Phuc knew that he had to gun Spesh Exam in order to compensate for the marks lost in his English exam. The school that Phuc went to, is extremely selfish with their funds and instead of spending money on company trial exams for their year 12 students, they spent all the funds to implement new high-quality automatic toilets that automatically wipe teachers' bum after they are done with the pooping. The teachers at Phuc's school are known for their extreme laziness and poor personal hygiene. It was so bad that it infringed the public health laws and it compelled the Victorian education and health minister to enforce sanitary measures to clean their act up. Phuc felt he needed more practice through trial exams, so he decided to surf the net to find pirated exams. So he typed vce into google and under the text box preferences, 'VCE notes' appeared and he clicked on the link and entered the home page of VN. He first saw a whole block of introductory text, but he didn't understand hardly anything because the elegant vocabulary of Mr. Levy was too high for him. Despite that, he still registered for an account and he entered the forum. He searched around the forum and came across this thread called, 'Extensive VCE Exam Resources' created by danieltennis, the little robin hood who stole exams from wealthy and prestigious schools such as MHS and Macrob. Delighted Phuc downloaded the Spesh exam package. However he had dial-up which meant it will take 1 day to download the package. So he left the computer on all night and the next day. the download finished. Since Phuc will have his spesh exam the next day, he decided to take it easy and only attempt one trial exam - the Heffernan 2007 exam 2. So he did the trial exam under timed conditions and checked the solutions. He got everything correct except for 1 extended-response question in which he lost all the marks to. He didn't even attempt the question because he didn't even know where to begin with. So he looked at the solutions, understood it and re-did the question.
24 hours later, in the reading-time phase of his exam, he quickly scanned through the extended questions and came across a question that was identical to the question that he could not even do in the Heffernan exam he attempted yesterday. He smiled.
1 month later, in the year where the UMAT was first abolished and the ENTER required for MBBS was 99.00, Phuc obtained an ENTER of 99.05 and he was offered first round offer into MBBS. He was over the moon, and so was his parents.
8 years later, at a party surrounded by close family and friends, Phuc's little baby cousin drowns in the family's swimming pool unsupervised. A family member soon notices, calls Phuc for help and jumps into the pool to save their little cousin. Phuc arrives and notices that the baby is unconscious. Remembering the procedures that he learnt at uni the year before, he applies CPR and restores live back into his baby cousin.
And if only one thing had happened differently: if Mr. Levy was too self-conscious to create VN; or if BoS didn't exist (danieltennis wouldn't find his way on here); or if Mr. Levy didn't permanently ban danieltennis because he was trolling VN; or if Phuc's internet was broadband, his state of mind could have been different and he could of picked a different exam instead of Heffernan 2007; or if the vcaa spesh exam writer wasn't so lazy and checked other previous company trial exams to see if he wasn't writing an identical question; or if vcaa/uni authorities had a different thought of mind and didn't want to impose the removal of the UMAT; or if the whole cohort of Victoria spent more time on studying rather spending precious time on Facebook, Phuc would not have achieved over an ENTER score of 99 and thus, would not have been able to made it into med school, his baby cousin will die and the baby's mother will commit suicide due to a high-level of depression.

In 5 years: hmm 2015 so hopefully MBBS III @Monash :)
In 10 years: hmm 2020... either a GP or entry into the world of Neurosurgery specialization ;)
-
-a melbourne uni student
-then as a job, Reconstructive surgery/research/GP @ a hospital
-or perhaps Chemical/bioengineering
:D

If dentistry doesnt work out, I like the idea of advancing the world's technology and understanding through research ;3

Case one:
5 years: Just out and working as an acturial analyst while competing part three acturial exams
10 years: Same thing, only fully qualified as an actuary
Case two:
5 years: Undertaking a Juris Doctor
10 years: Working in some financial position in soemthing that requires maths

I'm having doubts about whether it's worth spending another 4-6 years getting a PhD... it's a long time to be trapped in university, and I've heard bad things about it.
So in 5 years, no idea. Either a job somewhere, or a PhD.
In 10 years, even less of an idea.
-
5 years (2015): In third year BComm Actuarial.
10 years (2020): Last year of JD. :)
Then either become a fully qualified actuary and join a business firm as an actuarial analyst. Or do a clerkship, then work at a commercial law firm, and after a few years take an LLM for specialisation :)

If it takes you 6 years to do your PhD then you're doing it wrong. Much shorter than that if you have a decent program and you like your chosen topic.
Anyway, in 5 years I'll probably be finishing up PG med but after that I'm completely undecided on where I want to go.

if you become an actuary, I realllllly don't see the point of doing a JD, lol.
-
Because I am interested in both areas, and according to the lecturers, law is applicable to basically all areas - this includes insurance. Keeps options open too.

1) AZ, ur just copying me.......... :P

moreso the keeping option open bit tho, havign a act stud degree is while highly sought after is rather limting in careers from what i hear tho. And the law bit of course can't exactly hurt ur chances of getting a job in any commercial enviroment.

um danieltennis... i wouldnt consider that saving the entire world
That baby cousin would have grown on to cure cancer
-
finished my law degree and making my way to the top
-
Medicine hopefully... but if that doesnt happen... no idea..

in hospital

In 5-10 years time from now, I'd like to be doing something that I enjoy and have a passion for = LAW.
LOL.

I am thinking the same in a sense. Probably unlike you, my issue is whether I have what it takes to do a PhD and whether I would love to do high level research in Mathematics. I can say to everyone now that I love math and I wish to be a lecturer/professor one day but the math I have done so far is nothing compared to what I will be doing next year, so I really don't know at this stage whether a career in academics is for me. I simply don't hold enough knowledge in the field of mathematics to be able to say I 100% want/will do a PhD, but I do know that mathematics will feature heavily in my career, whatever it may be.
Recently I have been re-assessing my career path/goals and I think maybe after doing a bachelor's with honours I could work as an analyst say for the government or do a Master's by coursework first. This would be an interesting career, applying mathematics to real-world situations and working within a team that can have many specialists such as physicist, astrophysicist, statistician, biologist, other mathematicians, etc. There would still be plenty of time to do a PhD and have a long career in academics this way, but you get more life experience and diversity.
This might not even happen, I might go straight on to a PhD after my honours and start a career in academics. Only time will enable me to see where my passion truly lies after I actually have some experience with high level mathematics.
If it takes you 6 years to do your PhD then you're doing it wrong. Much shorter than that if you have a decent program and you like your chosen topic.
Anyway, in 5 years I'll probably be finishing up PG med but after that I'm completely undecided on where I want to go.
4-6 years might be referring to a PhD in the US and that is if you love your chosen topic. The average for completion of a PhD in the US is 7 years with 57% of students who begin a Ph.D. program in the US will complete their degree within 10 years, 30% will drop out or be dismissed, and 13% of students will continue on past 10 years.
For Australia, the average is more like 4.5 years.
If I end up doing a PhD I would love to do it in the US. The reason for the long length of PhD's in the US is because for the first 1-2 years there is a coursework requirement and an entry exam after the coursework so you can start work on your dissertation. The coursework is usually masters level where you can be awarded a master's degree along the way to your PhD. Australia's PhD's have no coursework requirement.

I did three months ago.
sooo u smoked weed with a guy and rooted his wife?
Nah man, I wish.
Instead, I had a nervous breakdown about journalism and the ins and outs of having no real job (which I think we can both agree, there are only outs to), the uselessness of a Media and Communications degree and the likelihood of ever being paid more than 50 cents a word for things that have a 10% chance of being published.
Then I missed science, so thought I should probs move and do like, med.
Good.

Im thinking hopefully doing a phd / finished a phd in some area of physics (=
-
Hopefully I will have finished a PhD in theoretical particle physics. Then hopefully do my postdoc work in the US or Europe.
After having a semester of quantum mechanics and seeing the stuff my mate is doing in third year particle physics I am certain that I want to make this my lifelong career.
-
In 5 years: 1 of 3 options ordered in most likely outcome, doing honours/postgrad mathematics. Or working full time as a chemical engineer or doing a postgrad degree in engineering.
Doing honours/postgrad maths is still high even if I complete my full double degree. I've got no clue how long honours in science can be deferred for and I'm assuming it can only be for a year because of double degree students.

sounds awesome! im also debating if i should do engineering,if not ill most likely do physics.
