Title: Need help with first car buying
Post by: 98.40_for_sure on September 05, 2010, 12:58:23 am
When looking for a nice car for a cheap price, what would you take into consideration?
Pretty much im looking for a nice looking one, <10,000, and im not sure what kind of kms you would be looking for.
Dont know much about cars

Thanks for expert opinions!

You can get an 02' Holden Calais with Leather for that price. Try and find one in a good nick, low kms etc. Don't look on Carpoint. Go Pickles or Fowles-can find a v. cheap one at an auction.

If I were you, I wouldn't invest the money into a car. I would try to save around $17,000 - $20,000 (first home buyer) and invest that money into a property such as a 2-room apartment or a 2-room flat. Then let two people rent out your property. A property never loses its value, a car does. It's an investment for life.

Just with 17000??

You have too show your income too support the repayments..

Yes, just with $17,000. You have to understand that it is very difficult to save $17,000 especially for an average working Australian family. Most families only save a few thousands dollars annually.
It's best if you ask your parents to apply for the mortgage under their name, but of course, you will have to take full responsibility

Sorry but I doubt a decent property can be bought with $17,000.

That money could get a car with vtec yo

No property is worth $17,000. What I meant was you have to deposit $17,000 in order to be granted a loan.

wait does 99.95 need investment advice or does he need a car? im guessing he doesn't want to invest in a first car in search for a return... im guessing he needs a car to drive for himself

but yeah not sure just go around the different dealers checking for a car you like with low kilometres

The real question is: does he really need a car? If he really needs a car urgently, I guess it's best if he spent the money on the car instead of investing into a property.

Lol, i haven't thought that far ahead about investing in property.
Just for uni next year, i can take my dads car but then i'd be at uni 5 days a week, morning to night and he can't get anywhere.
So instead i was thinking to get my own car.

I've heard that monash parking lot is a dangerous place for a nice shiny car, so i dunno if i should drive a bomb or get a better car.
Experiences anyone? Car door bumps, key slashes etc

Lol, i haven't thought that far ahead about investing in property.

You should definitely think about it! :) I'm trying to save up and hopefully I can purchase a property by the end of next year or in two years time. Investing into a property is the safest and the best investment there is possible!

Seriously you can pick up a decent car for <$5,000....
There's no need to spend heaps on a nice new car...
you could probably go to car city and get a good deal??

Get a nice holden. For not a lot of money, you can get the luxury of a middle-upper class car (Calais/Berlina).

Driving is not just a means of transportation, driving is a freedom, and it's something you learn to enjoy. There's nothing quite like cruising down the highway on a sunny day with wind on your face.

In regards to Monash parking lots, I drive an Audi A6 and it's been fine for the whole year. Never even though of the possibility someone would scratch it on purpose or whatever.

Apparently all the people at monash are inexperienced drivers and fail at parking thus dint your car and drive off. The cameras aren't good enough to capture license plates and the people operating them are too lazy to even care when you complain about your car being damaged.

I think Monash is the safest place possible to park a car.

The electric motor for the roof of my convertible stopped working the other week, so I couldn't get the roof of the car up once I got to uni.
Left it like that in the undercover parking all day (until 5pm) - came back and it was still in perfect condition.
I took precautionary measures by taking the front of my CD player off, my etag, and the money in my ashtray.

That having been said, I spose there is a danger that with so many noob drivers, your car may get hit when someone's trying to park.
This hasn't happened to me, and I'm not sure how common it is.

All this having been said: you should get a cheap car.
This is because you yourself are a noob driver.
I don't mean this harshly... it's just fact.
Consider it to be a "consolidating my driving skills" car.
I'd advise you to spend no more than a few thousand dollars.

If you do have left over money, then I'd agree with danieltennis - a first home savers account has one of the highest returns around, making it an awesome investment. Including the government bonus, I'm getting a 23.2% return on the money I've invested in my ME FHSA. The trade-off is that you basically can't touch this money for any other purpose than to buy your first home, but property purchase is also a fantastic investment itself.

The blue car parks near monash sport are soo small, no wonder most ppl drive those funny looking little cars. There was a low speed accident near that area a month ago.

Safest option would be to part near the staff.

In regards to buying an old car, how many Km's do people here think would be reasonable to have on the odometer? (I'm looking for a toyota camry sedan, late 80's - early 90's model)

Yes, no house can be bought with 17k, but an acre of farm land can be bought for that money. Sit on it for 5+ years, then hopefully get a subdivision permit and boom! you're rich.

Get a holden (and spend every cent of your income on lower, rims, exhaust, sound). Go drag that ford idiot pulling up beside you, because you eat that shit for breakfast.
