Title: 2008'ers... Subject discussion!
Post by: enwiabe on December 17, 2007, 11:46:14 pm
Okay, now that us 2007'ers have had our glory on results day, it's time for those who are doing VCE *next* year to come out of the woodwork! Discuss what your subject selections were, your fears about them, your expectations etc. Hopefully we'll be able to help you (us 2007s) allay any fears and talk through any problems!

Should I repeat methods?

No, you won't have the time. You will be vastly overwhelmed with all of your highly demanding subjects next year. Just forget about it and move on.

Hmm.. dilemma.

Let me help you choose not to repeat with this scenario:

To get over 45 in Biology, you'll need to do at least 25 prac exams per unit
To get over 45 in Chem, you'll need to do at least 25 prac exams per unit
To get over 40 in Spec, you'll need to do at least 20 exam 1s and 20 exam 2s
To get over 40 in English, you're looking at 10-15 essays per book, and 10 media essays
To get 5.5 in unimaths, you're looking at every practise exam you can get a hold of as well as copious other amounts of work

That's already well over a couple hundred hours of work of revision. Do you really want to pile methods onto that?

You didn't do terribly, just say "okay that's my 7th subject!", smile, and get on with it. :P

Subjects:
English
IT Applications
Legal Studies
Methods
Physics

I didn't do a 3/4 this year as my stupid school discouraged it :(. Hoping to do very well next year.

Hmm.. dilemma.

Interesting.. So, where is a good source for these practise exams? :)

Practice exams will be available on this site very soon =)(they could be here somewhere already not sure though) ... and you always have the previous vcaa exams

that is exaggerating things a bit enwiabe. I got 44 for Bio and probably only did 25 prac exams for the year. I got 48 for Chem and did maybe 16-17 max for each unit

Post by: pillmatic on December 18, 2007, 05:00:25 pm
I wouldn't say its an exaggeration but 25+ exams does not guarantee a 45+ hah as I should know.I did in excess of 25 exams and ended up with a score lower then people who have only done 9-10.I guess doing as much practice exams serves to increase your confidence for the most part lol. I know that all the prac exams I did for biology were NOTHING like the exam. Ahah it all comes down to luck sometimes.

Well I have to admit I'm scared about Maths Methods seeing as I hadn't done too well in the end of year exams.English as well, this new course is making me nervous.Oh yeah and chemistry as well. I am dooooomed. Goodbye 98+

edit: as well as give you practice/exposure too lol

I got 45 in Specialist having done clearly less than 5 of both Exam 1 and Exam 2 altogether. I got 45 in Chemistry with 12 past exams per unit.

Study effectively rather than hard.

(I did no practice essays, except for school set ones, which was about 1-3 for English and got 36, out of curiosity. I did completely no past papers for Information Systems in 2005 and got 40 raw.)

Hey, first post for me.  :D

Next year I'm doing:
English
Lit
Maths Methods
Renaissance
National Politics

I did Revs this year, did no work and got 35 (and was very excited).

Do you think it will be hard work next year for me because of all my humanities subjects?

I don't think so. I mean if you enjoy your subjects and you're willing to work hard in them then they shouldn't be a problem. It's not like you cant get 45 upwards in humanities. But goodluck :)

Hey.
This is my first post. I did Biology 3/4 this year and got 43.
Subjects I'm doing in '08:
English
Ethics (Unit 1 only)
German
Maths Methods
Specialist Maths
Chemistry
UMEP Biology

Do you think this is too much?? Spoke to a few teachers and they said it would be possible, but quite stressful. My biology teacher told me that I would be fine.. Still unsure though..

Well as long as you manage your time wisely then it's definitely possible... however it may be a little too much considering the subjects that you've chosen require a lot of work/study... it really comes down to your time management skills (ahh business management lol) :)
Good luck

would it be too much to do 6 subjects in yr 12?

My friend did 6, he ended up with a 69. Overworked, and overstressed, he did not study effectively and paid the price. I vote against it.

Study what you think will be useful to you. A concentrated session for one hour focussing on a single task always beats out three checking the phone/msn etc every few seconds.

I think it would be too much personally. I dont think its worth it for the rough 3 point benefit (10%). You should be able to make up for the loss through applying the extra time to your other subjects in ur top 4
Title: Re: 2008'ers... Subject discussion!
Post by: JL_91 on December 19, 2007, 10:33:39 pm
for me, it really depends on who you are. some kids overseas (in highly competitive countries) study >8 final-year subjects in a year and still get fabulous marks, so that shows you that it is more than possible to do 6 VCE subjects in yr 12. i think that with great time mgmt and the 'right' mindset you can seriously do it!
i may or may not be doing 6 subjects in '08 (incl. one UMEP), as it says in my sig, but one would be a repeat if i did. on that note i need some advice...i won't reveal my methods cas SS, but my situation is this: i studied hard and found methods easy this year, after SACs and exam 1 should've gotten very high SS, but exam technique let me down in exam 2 which brought down my SS. i pretty much need 99+ ENTER, and this would be a very easy repeat for me...but is it worth my time? any thoughts...

why are you only doing unit 1 of ethics? if you are not going to take it as a subject, u might as well drop it? your workload does seem to be quite big but as some people have already mentioned, it comes down to you and planning your time well. personally i wouldn't want to do that much subjects because people who only do 4 get to concentrate so much on their subjects and they will probably do better in them and possibly get a better ENTER.

JL, i think u should probably look and sort of gauge which subjects ure doing quite well in n will probably be your primary 4, and see if the ss u can get for methods will succeed that by a lot. just a thought =)

I attend a Catholic school, so yes, unfortunately, religion is compulsory. This is from my vce handbook: "In Year 11 all students gain one unit of humanities when they study Unit 2 Ethics and Morality from Religion and Society. At Year 12 students undertake the school-based course - The Search for Meaning.".. This year Unit 2 was spread out over the whole year, so we ended up having less classes/week of ethics compared to a regular subject..

to monicak drop one subject that u are least good at
I need to keep:
English
Maths Methods
Chemistry
I would like to keep Specialist Maths, as maths is probably my best subject. That leaves me with ethics, german and umep biology.. I guess I could discuss the possibility of dropping ethics with my principal/re coordinator, but I doubt they would let me drop it. Even if they did, my workload would not drastically change, as ethics is a bit of a bludge. Which subject do you think I should drop, assuming that my German is as strong as Biology? Am aiming for a high ENTER..
Title: Re: 2008'ers... Subject discussion!
Post by: Mao on December 20, 2007, 10:51:30 am
does passing RE really matter? if u just sit there and do other subjects work and hand in half the work half the time?
if u think ur competent, UMEP (or MUEP) is really helpful, as passing practically as a 40 (or is it 45?), and good grades (not best) =50
if you like doing maths (and its endless repetitions), then i suggest keep it. doing subjects you like is really important, but also keep in mind that A: only 6 subjects counts and B: in case u've done 6 VCE subjects, UMEP/MUEP dont count (right? that's wot monash told me...)

*jealous* that means u only need to do 4 subs + RE + UMEP

How many subjects have you done in Year 11? Try to have an overall number of 6 or 7 subjects. If you know that the two Maths will be placed in your top 4, then German would be useful to take that 3rd spot (unless you already have a 50 in Biology 3/4). Chemistry is also a very rich top 4 candidate. UMEP Biology has the same potential as German, except it is restricted as a 10% increment subject, so I would choose German.

I loved methods CAS, it's so fun, esp for the calculator, i got to muck around with programming (however simple, even simpler than VB but meh), it was soooo much better that the boring 84+ (but a disappointment that the 89T only come in black, the blue 84 looks cool :( )
that, and we got some slightly more challenging questions...
