Title: Have you ever felt your work was unfairly marked by a specific teacher?
Post by: dekoyl on March 05, 2009, 06:02:28 pm
There's a teacher that I suspect has a problem with me and now with year 12, she decides to screw me over by deducting marks from my SAC without properly justifying her reasons. I'm yet to privately speak to her about this but I'm not sure what I should do.

Just ask her why, and if she doesn't respond then talk to someone with more authority.

roflmao i remember there was this teacher that just hated my friend back in year 10, i wrote an essay and it was A+. Then in the second semester my friend used my essay and handed it in and got only a B for it. Shows how biased teachers are :P lol

yes yes that has happened to me.
In chemistry, kurrymuncher and myself got the same question wrong in a redox titration SAC, but she gave him an "Outstanding" where as i only got an "excellent". :(
i guess she's just racist

It's more the exam that saves your bacon from crap SAC marks.  Remember, if your exam marks are higher than your SAC marks, then your SAC marks will be moderated according to your exam result and vice versa.

Maybe get some feedback for the same essay from another teacher?

Well nothing too important but I am pretty sure my old history teacher was racist...or something. A friend and I were doing a bunch of questions. Mine were detailed paragraphs with coloured in pictures (yay me primary school work do brain no hurt ftw plox!!!), one kid done shitty two worded answers and coloured in with red pen...I had to redo all the pictures because of the shade of green for the grass I used while he got a well done stick...

My italian teacher hates me and Im pretty sure she always marks me lower than her 'star' student. How is it that I always do good in the grammar part (only one answer possible so no teacher judgement) but never do well in the wrtiting part(which is assesed by the teacher)

I remember bak in Yr9, this student teacher absolutely hated me.

I got a C+ for an assignment she marked, while the class dumb ass got an A.

My actual teachers asked me wot she's given me and they were pretty shocked when I told them... and I didn't get on with my actual teachers that well either, so that's saying something.

Now the student teacher is a fully fledged teacher @ the same skool ;D

I feel like my english language teacher is biased against everyone. He has never given close to full marks (even with the year 11 dux last year), while other teachers give full marks for essays very often. This kinda makes SAC marking a bit worrying...

While you all tell anecdotal stories of teachers hating you, I remember describing my situation last year of my English teacher unfairly giving me GOOD grades (in my opinion).

In Year 8 English my teacher decided to mark me down because my vocabulary was "too advanced." Go figure.

Does your school cross-mark SACs? It's a long and tedious process, but it eliminates bias. Well, to an extent...

The exact same thing happened to my brother ... who's in year 8.

Freaky.

It can't be the same teacher. Thankfully for the rest of the state she retired a few years ago.

I've also had a myriad of other... "interesting" teachers, but none of them had such strange marking schemes.

Haha oh. Well my brother does have quite an extensive vocabulary and his teachers know that I'm a law student, so they assume that I'm doing the work for him. Pffft. Just because I do his art homework doesn't mean I do his English too!

lol.  When you do his art homework, are you sure you're not painting the words on the canvass for his essay that he has to do for homework?  :P

LOL no.

I do it because it was an elective forced on him (he didn't pick it) and because, in his words, "girls are so much better at this pretty stuff"

Some schools also cross-mark a cross section of SACs. So, they might cross-mark one A+ level essay, one A, one B+, etc. It doesn't eliminate bias, but it does help standardise the marking scheme.

Well aren't you a lucky one. I'm on the other end of the spectrum. I was, as i believe, picked up by my teacher. He never liked me. And i knew this as a fact because in one of our look both ways essays, I wrote the same idea that he mentioned in class. It was about the use of camera angles in the film- and how it showed some characters' vaunerable side. The topic was something about "S.W uses an array of techniques to send a message that noone is secure in life" or something to that effect. I got my report card back and had gotten a C- with the comments box saying that i drifted off topic. I went upto him and was like- would you mind sitting with me and going through the essay to show me where i went wrong/drifted off topic. He blasted at me ["are you telling me i can't mark ect ect"; but i didnt stand down. So i persisted and eventually, he goes "there was no use for the camera angle point...it was off topic". Yeah, owch.

Anyways, from that SAC on, i knew he had it in for me. He also did little things like correcting other peoples work before mine- even though i had been there first/asked him first..but meh. Im a easy going guy, so didn't get offended- just disliked him greatly.

The only thing that ticked me off is that he would constantly give other people A+'s over me. Then in the exam, most of those who got straight A+'s didnt perform as well. This hit in when i got  A A A+ = 37 whilst others got A+ A+ A= 40 and A+ A+ B+= 38. Yeah, but i sympathise with any of you guys. It's the worst position to be in, especially when SAC's aren't cross marked.

/rant. =P

Edit: Changed essay topic..i think it was that:P

I think the reason why some people get marked better than others for work that should essentially be on similar mark range is because the person who got a higher mark was probably in debating.

Had this problem in Year 9.

I've always been pretty damn good at English, So i hand up a poem, she puts up all the best ones on the wall (and later in the newsletter i hear) and gives them all back. (Mine was $#%^$#@ awesome by the way, i think i did well) So, I see her after class, she thinks i couldn't possibly write something like that, she pretty much implied that  i cheated.

That same lesson she talked up her own anti cheating system, typing a line of it into google. I was like to her - "You can type all of it into google if you like... check all the books in the library" (I mean come on where else would i really be bothered to cheat off) she made me redo it ... i was going to tell her to stick it but i just swallowed my pride and moved on.

Then a term later the same thing happened when a story i wrote..she thought there would be no way i was able to write this O_O. So much for moving on.

Oh and my methods teacher despises me (probably because i don't do any work though). He gives it to another guy much worse...basically humiliating and teasing him in-front of the class. So... i was so stoked since he told us he was leaving.. i showed up to my first yr12 methods class today.. he was there O_O *JAWDROP*. He was making veiled references ... there are some people that shouldn't even be in this class, judging by their exam marks (i think i failed)*looks at me* there are some people who are just going to die this year in this subject and wonder why they took it. (Yeah i hate methods... but the course im looking at requires me to just do it.. not even pass i think(

Nah doesn't really happen to me. Except I think I get way too high marks for English considering how bad my writing is.
