Title: Science at Melbourne
Post by: phagist_ on December 18, 2007, 02:51:13 pm
Anyone doing Science and Melbourne under the New gen model?

It's my number 1 preference and am really looking forward to it!

What will the CSP ENTER requirement be?

They haven't specified (it's dependent on demand) but I'm guessing ~88-89ish maybe?

I don't have a clue.. that's a really rough guess though, haha.
edit: btw, noticed you're from Keysy.. I'm from Dingley!

Aw ok.
My brother got a 83.20. He's gonna put it down on his preferences but probabably wont get it I guess. But we are from an underrepresented school so he might get a favour from Melb Uni lol.

Ohh Dingly I used to play tennis there once in a while back when I used to play for Keyzy against Dingly.

He might get it. In 2005, 82.05 was the lowest ENTER score to get in (not sure if that includes middleband consideration). In 2006, I didn't bother to check.

If he got into Melbourne Science I think he would be ecstatic.

I'm not sure how everyone else is looking at the the whole GUARANTEED ENTER situation but from my understanding I would believe that if demand was not excessively high for a subject then the actual ENTER requirement could very well be under the GUARANTEED ENTER score.
Science at Melbourne isn't the most sought after degree now is it?

Heh, but it usually doesn't drop below its Guaranteed ENTER. It still makes sense to have places offered below the Guaranteed ENTER, just that they weren't guaranteed :P

But its not the clearly-in mark right? (Well in a sense it is). But it isn't based on the scores from the years before. It is just a number that they have created that will ensure a high quality level of students as well as maintaining accessibility for students.

So couldn't it be said that clearly in goes by demand and supply while guaranteed enter goes purely on Universty choice?

Yes. The guaranteed ENTER is set as a "clearly-in" for full-fee students, but not CSP. The clearly-in is the useful indicator for CSP places.

Yep cool cool as I thought. I guess maybe with underreped scenario he may JUST may scrape in. If not other avenues are available =)

I heard if you get lower than 92.00, you have to have done *two* of physics, chem and bio

so does the guaranteed ENTER mean that if you get over that you are 100% guaranteed a place in that course with full fee?

What'll you do as a "breadth subject"?

I think he's gonna try some economics. That'll keep him away from the stupid fluff of stupid breadth subjects.

Yes

good boy! see, as if you wouldn't do maths.

i still say PhB at ANU pwns BSc at UoM though  :P

apparently ANU's PhB pwns every other science course in australia. *feels ashamed for monash*   :-\
i wonder how monash's science scholar program stacks up.

i have a friend who does that course (leachy on BoS). it's a good course. but monash definitely isn't as good as ANU or UMelb for science - the courses they offer aren't as good (comparing subjects with leachy, i've found that there aren't as many maths courses at monash than at ANU, and the ones at monash are generally a fair bit easier).
that being said, the science scholar program at monash is the next best science program for high achieving students in australia.

Oh cool ^_^
There's just no way I could move away anywhere, despite if there are better things. wouldnt be able to cope with it.

I'm doing BSc next year (changed my mind about Monash). I'll be majoring in mechanical systems with mostly physics electives. Concurrently a small voice in the back of my head is making me think I should major in mathematical physics. I think I'm naturally inclined to toss about between things. I'm so indecisive. :(

I've heard that melbourne engineering is horrible, but how is it for science? Is Melbourne one of the top universities for physics/maths? Or is physics included in 'engineering'?

Erm... I didn't know this thread was so old sorry  :-\

Different faculties, so nope.

Engineering at Melbourne is not horrible for Chemical Engineering, in my experience.

Cool, thanks. My school only offers UMEP so I was hoping my extra credit points wouldn't be wasted :P

I doubt they'd be wasted if you went to Monash, or anywhere else

I got credit for UMEP maths at ANU, so I got to skip the first year first semester honours maths course (went straight through to second year courses...).

And generally for science, and in particular maths, UMelb is definitely the best in Victoria.

I read Vtac guide 2010 and under Science at uom that doing this course will lead to careers such as Science and Veterinary Medicine
Major studies: incl. Chemistry, zoology, pharmacology..heaps more.

Does this mean undertaking Science will create an opportunity to do S&VM ?
Doing subjects such as chem, zoology in uni?

I think you only have the opportunity of doing veterinary medicine if you do the right major.

I think you only have the opportunity of doing veterinary medicine if you do the right major.

And the right subjects from first year, which is usually just Chemistry and Biology in both semesters of first year.
