Title: Fastest Rubik's cube times?
Post by: pi on November 14, 2010, 04:13:05 pm
Just wondering what the PBs were around the VN community. I'm pretty slow, having best done it in 42 seconds (3x3). My time for a 4x4 was in hours, having only done it once  :(

How about everyone else?

Lol, looks exactly like the one I've got, but for $6 cheaper!

If it doesn't move fast enough though, just break it apart and use Vasceline or something on each of the inside faces and then put it back together (although don't do this unless you really want good times because they can be hard to put back together at first).

you think 42 seconds is slow? mine is about a minute longer than that. oh mediocrity :(

^ errr why did you buy online for 6$
you can go to any 2$ shop and buy them for like 1-2$ o-o

this one is 'original' by the actual rubik's cube company. my experiences with $2 rubiks cubes are not so good, having smashed one accidentally when I dropped it (the little cubes broke!).

they're probably of quite poor quality. i've seen some with off-colours (purple rather than red and such) and I suppose it's just an aesthetic thing. Also, i've never actually seen one in a $2 shop, I looked all around high point and ended up getting a rather expensive one. But that was years ago.

Hm, i've heard that vaseline can damage one's rubiks cube when used to lubricate the mechanisms.
It essentially destroys it from the inside out. Something to do with it being oil-based? I'm not really sure.

I assume a silicone-based product would be better.

that would actually be better, but the damage is quite slow (from my experience) and vasceline is much cheaper

my fastest is like 48 seconds :) was a fluke tho i got lucky with one of the combinations :P
usually get 55secs to 1min 10secs.

also DO NOT buy the el cheapo ones, not worth it. dont be a tight ass get the real thing they are soooo much better :)

My fastest was a minute 10, i couldn't seem to break the 60s barrier, so i just stopped trying..this was last year though, if i try now, it'll probably be 1:30 min.. Yea, cheap cubes aren't worth it, i think i bought 3 before a good one, ended up breaking them all because the axel wouldn't turn.
try 4x4x4 or 5x5x5. 5x5x5 is actually easier :D cause there is a set colour for each side, unlike 4x4x4..

I'm pretty bad because I never learnt the PLL's and OLL's for 3x3 but doing it the noob way I got it down to like 1min 20s.
My friend's in the 20s range, he's a beast!
With luck I can do the 4x4x4 in 15 mins LOL. I ceebs learning parity so I just jumble up the inner sides.

Your friend is certainly a beast! I don't think my method could ever get me 20s, my average being 50s-1min.

Still, world record is like 7.08 seconds... (yep, wtf?)

I think that's a bit unfair to say. You can't expect everyone to devise algorithms when they just want to have fun seeing it work.

Yea but he did learn the methods which result in faster times, I think it was all OLLs and some PLLs which helped him get down to taht as well as practice. i take like a min to jumble it up LOL

I've attached a book which a few chapters is solely dedicated to the rubik's cube. Alot of combinatorial mathematics (one of my fave areas!) can be played around with the rubik's cube :)

I think i'm too n00b to understand most of this, but after reading the introduction, it is clear that there is certainly a lot of maths associated with the Rubik's cube (all various forms of it). We are surrounded by maths!

That site is actually quite good, once you get used to all the acronyms :)

Sub-20s is so pro and 12 seconds is definitely international standard!
