We all know the majority of people here play piano (no offense intended - I play as well :P).
Anyone actually play guitar?
If so, could you recommend a couple of songs that I could learn?
I've got a Legend acoustic and I'm getting the Maton EM225C soon :), so no electric distorted nonsense.
Only been playing Tommy Emmanuel for the last year or so.
Any song of intermediate to advanced difficulty that sounds awesome would help me out. I've become a one-trick pony because I don't know what else to play besides Tommy (he is the King after all).
Thanks fellas,
Sammy

Wow...
No one plays the greatest instrument ever invented?
:(
-
I do.
-
i'm going to learn how to play it :) (hopefully)

I do.

You won't regret it.

I play, not currently during VCE.
I have a Jap fender Strat, can't remember year, but it's a good year!
It was a 40th anniversary edition of a famous one, it's a sweet guitar.

Playing guitar was my only escape during VCE. The lack of games/movies/tv shows etc. meant that I relied on my guitar more than ever to alleviate my boredom.

I do this occasionally when I'm stressed out. Blackbird ftw

I'm thinking of starting these holidays (just like I did the previous two summers; I SWEARS I'M SERIOUS THIS TIME). Tossing up between acoustic and electric though =S

Hmm sure? Other places recommend electric first since it's apparently easier on the fingers. In terms of the music they can play, I'm happy to go either way and eventually intend to learn both. Just wondering what to start with to gauge my talent and interest.
EDIT: Crap, realised I just hijacked your thread OP so hmm. Some random songs that my friends keep playing while I'm around; Wonderwall by Oasis, I'm Yours and Lucky by Jason Mraz.

In Electric, when you play, things such as timing and your general knack for the instrument aren't so heavily reflected in the sound. Also, sloppy finger work, still produces good sound. However, on an acoustic, this isn't the case. If you don't press down perfectly and in the right place, you'll have a sloppy sound. Same with timing, bad timing on acoustic, you bloody notice it. If you learn electric you'll neglect all these aspects, it will become very hard to become a really really good player later on, because you'll develop bad habits. Trust me, learn the acoustic first, then move onto electric. Once you graduate (LOL) acoustic, if you pick up electric, you'll be able to muck around with sound distortion and stuff but your timing/technique will still be impeccable.
Trust me, acoustic.

+1 Sound advice. The transition from acoustic to electric will be much easier than vice versa.
Don't worry about the hijack. It's all good.
I was looking for fingerstyle songs. Playing Wonderwall and Jason Mraz eventually becomes tedious and repetitive (i.e. strum chords. strum chords. strum, strum strum lol). I used to play rhythm songs, but now I'm focusing on fingerstyle. It's much more challenging, but more rewarding.

Ah ok, that makes sense. I guess since I want to learn both eventually, I might as well develop some good habits. I know I'm the type to develop bad habits (e.g. handwriting, general body posture etc.) and stick with them forever. Thanks!

It's a lot harder than you think!
-
Any of you niggas on Ultimate-Guitar?
-
I do.
Woot! What are you playing at the moment?
I'm currently learning
For the Love of God - Steve Vai
Pride and Joy - Stevie Ray Vaughn
(I know these are on the VCE Solo Performance list, but I don't do VCE Music. I have a feeling my guitar teacher thinks I should do VCE Music, though)
EDIT: and in other news, my friends bought me a new practice amp for my birthday, last week. Roland Microcube. Cutest amp ever.
And I'm also learning some jazz standards for my school's stage band.
And with my band, I'm playing:
Misery Business - Paramore
Monkey Wrench - Foo Fighters
Sweet Disposition - The Temper Trap
to be performed at school (my guitar teacher thinks we should play in the quad - nobody told him that no-one ever hangs out in the quad)...next week, I think, was the plan, but we haven't rehearsed in weeks due to exams, so it'll probably be sometime next year.
Any of you niggas on Ultimate-Guitar?
I am, same username ;) Haven't been on the forums in a while, though.
-
As a matter of fact, I do recall seeing you around in the Pit.
-
^LOL really?
and MBBS, I learnt Blackbird maybe 2 years ago? Can't remember...but I may have the sheet music/tab lying around somewhere...you can have a copy if you want.
EDIT: The original Beatles version - I think it's a bit simpler than the version the kid in the video is playing.
-
Yeah. I don't really post much in the Pit though. Metal reg fo life
-
LOL. I can't even remember which forums I posted in, it feels like so long ago :S
Going on UG = hours wasted that could be spent actually practicing guitar and getting better at it.
Much like how going on VN = hours wasted that could be spent actually studying.

Yeah. Al is more of a Jazz-fusion dude but I do enjoy his unorthodox flamenco style
-
how difficult would it be to self-teach guitar given that i have no musical background at all?
-
i play guitar and all u really need to do is search up chords on google and watch guitar tutorials on youtube.. its also helpful if you know a friend who can pay guitar and is willing tot each u some stuff
-
For any musical instrument. I always say get a competent teacher for at least the first 3-6 months. You would need some good technique hammered into you (teehee). After that, you could choose to drop or continue, though I would always recommend the latter
-
err it is hard to learn solo
i did for the past 7 years and you would think i'd be a pro by now but.... i guess it depends on the level of playing you want to reach. just normal chord songs you can do solo easy enough, but if its music pieces then id suggest a teacher defintely
-
Self-learning can only take you so far. If you're aim is just to learn a few songs and strum some chords, self-learning is ok, but if you want to take the instrument seriously, I would recommend getting a competent, knowledgeable teacher. I've learnt so much from my teacher, everything from fingerstyle to jazz chords and improvisation to popping and slapping bass to fast metal solos. If I'd taught myself, I'd probably never be able to do half of what I can with my guitar.
-
Yer i agree get a music teacher.. i ma still an amateur guitar player like Justin bieber... thinking of getting a drum kit and guitar teacher as soon as i get enough money to do so
-
Used to. Back in Year 7 LOL
Thinking about starting again, anyone know where i can get a cheap acoustic from? :)

Acoustic Centre has some decently priced guitars. I'm buying a Maton from them soon.

Try second hand stores like Fretted Instruments in Fitzroy. You might find a good quality instrument for cheap.
-
For the guy who wanted fingerpicking songs try under the bridge by red hot chilli peppers. I'm currently battling my way through that and I think it's difficult but i'm also pretty terrible.
-
^ great song...though I use a pick to play it, most of the time.
-
How do you play the opening notes? 5th fret A string 3rd fret B string. Surely that requires you to play without a pick.
-
I do the low note with pick, high note with my 3rd (ring, not middle) finger. I think it's called hybrid picking, not sure. Seems logical to me, as the rest of the song sounds better with a pick, and it's cumbersome to pick one up b/w the intro and verse.
-
Learning how to play the guitar :)
Still learning the basic chords and stuff
So far I can play 'House of the Rising Sun', but not very fast lol
-
Was waiting for a thread like this to pop-up, ha.
I've been playing for about 3 years now. Haven't ever had a lesson. I don't like the idea of someone else telling me how to play.
LOVE blackbird. Probably my favourite song to play.
I play in a pop/rock/punk band. So exhilarating playing shows.
Guitar was an awesome relief from VCE stress.
-
taught myself as procrastination from a law essay... atm playing most normal chords, slowly getting on to finger picking... i'm getting started with here comes the sun, which isn't sounding too bad atm...
-
For those of you who've been playing guitar for a while, do you reckon you've lost a lot of sensitivity in the tips of your fingers? I've only been playing for a couple of days and they already feel weird.
-
I've played bass for three years now, and you get much more insensitive with bass than with guitar, especially with slap bass.
-
yea, i can stab a pin into my fingers and not feel anything :S
-
The skin toughens up. I've been away from guitar during exams and have been playing heaps recently. My fingers are bleeding :'(
-
same with rowing.. not sure if anyone here rows though...

Yep. It's fingerpicking as per your request. It's not that hard but it sounds great (and very sad, especially if you know the story behind it.)

Yeah, I do know the story (his kid falling off a balcony, right?). And yes, I already know how to play it :P. It was one of the first songs I learnt (both the strumming and the fingerpicking).

Okay then, try road trippin' by Red Hot Chilli Peppers. OR Classical Gas by Clapton

Lol I have already learned Classical Gas (the Tommy Emmanuel version). When I get uncapped, ill have a look at the red hot chili peppers.
Thanks mate!
-
classical gas eric clapton style sounds amazing! ive seen people play it on youtube and it looks fairly simple chord-based hand formations, but i try and have never been able to get into the fast-paced segment :/ i think this is when teachers come in handy....

The trick to learning this song is just practice. I havent had any lessons, but I was still able to learn this song. You have to play the fast sections extremely slowly until you can play it through without mistakes. Then all you have to do is slowly speed it up.
-
I 'acquired' the L&M Guitar Series from the internet and it's pretty damn awesome. It's amazing how much freedom learning the C-major scale gives you, since it makes u learn all the note names and their position.
But barre chords are ridiculous :|
I tried to do barres across the first fret but no matter how hard I push down with my index finger, it seems the fat between my joints doesn't push down as hard as my joints. So all the strings I hit with my joints sound and all the strings between my joints are muted. When doing a barre across all the strings it's usually the second and third strings which are muted. How do you get over this?
-
^^time and practice^^ I've heard of people trying those hand grip things (the ones you squeeze) to strengthen their grip.
-
hmmm kk, I'm gonna try that and some finger pushups :p
-

+1
The only way really. I struggled initially to do barre chords (especially on the first fret), but eventually, over time, you'll find that it will become much easier.
-
I had far more of a problem co-ordinating my pinky and getting my fingers to stretch than I ever had with barre chords.
-
strength and proficiency come with practice. LOTS of practice. There's no shortcut.
-
Anyone here able to sing and play? I'm trying to do so but even with simple chords (mostly against me! songs) the moment I start singing I lose rhythm and co-ordination in both hands.
-
Haha. I'm trying to do the same with Against Me songs.Try doing it with the music until you get it.
-
I can sing and play in tune, despite the fact singing is by no means my forte. It might be better to practice with songs that are simpler and very common. For example, Waltzing Matilda etc. That way, someone else can usually play/sing with you, helping you to keep in time.
On a side note, I just gave my guitar to a friend, so for now, I have nothing to play on :( Gonna buy a new one in a month (feels like a year...)
-
Haha. I'm trying to do the same with Against Me songs.Try doing it with the music until you get it.
I've recently fell in love with them all over again. The first time i heard White Crosses i was annoyed because of how different (read:poppy) it sounded but i gave it a few runs and it's sort of alright i guess (not my favourite.) However, I then found an acoustic version of white crosses on youtube followed by discovering Tom Gabel's solo album (Harsh Realms in particular) and i just can't stop listening to them. I think i nearly cried when they cancelled their tour to Australia.

When strumming a chord, say, A minor or C major, I usually use my left thumb to mute the 6th string. I reckon it's really hard to be accurate with the right hand when strumming, so I just strum all six strings. Is this a bad habit? How important is it to be accurate with your right hand strum?

I learnt classical for about a year so was always taught to have my hand middle of the neck. It took me years to realise that muting strings with the thumb is the easiest/best way to strum so no, I wouldn't be concerned. Look up people playing on youtube or wherever and you'll find muting with the thumb is a common practice.
-
I mute all the time now :]
I just learned how to play Paranoid Android and Subterranean Homesick Alien, cool stuff
Can't sing them for shit though, so many high notes

Going to buy a Maton EM225C on the weekend!!! Finally getting my new guitar! Any tips on where to get it? I'm thinking Acoustic Centre or Billy Hyde.
-
My Boss RC 20-XL pedal just arrived today, woo. Looping fun times!
-
Finally!!! Got a Maton EM325C from Billy Hyde with a hard case and strap. Pumped!
Quick, song recommendations; I'm on a high and I'll play anything right now.
-
Just learned a few Bruno Mars songs (only found out that he existed a couple of days ago). Also had a go at a few of the obvious guitar songs (Wonderwall, Jason Mraz etc.).
-

im keen to get into a band! or just to have jams.

SAME! Learning Tommy's version was by far my most epic guitar moment. By far my favourite guitar song.

I play as well :-) Been playing on and off for 2 years haha. Haven't learned a single song yet!
Last song I was trying to learn was Hana by Masaaki Kishibe :3
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvkmosEt_RM
I really should practice more after this year is over xD
Some songs I like:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9efHwnFAkuA I'll be happy when I can play the song at that tempo! Haha
-

Hmmm. I'm thinking of getting an RC 50 (especially seeing as the exchange rate is so good right now). I need something with stereo in/outs.
-

BTW: every sound is coming from that one device!!!!!!!!!!:OO and no, im not promoting it lol - its just so good ay..
-
Anyone watch 'Riff Of The Week' by Dave Weiner? The old ones are much better than the ones he's been uploading recently
Also recommend his two CDs (instrumental guitar but doesn't sound like he's just jamming over a backing track or showing off technique)
