Title: L/P plates - how do you wear them?
Post by: 98.40_for_sure on November 25, 2010, 10:28:06 pm
I just read that apparently it's illegal to have any part of your plate covered by tint and/or wipers.
My current setup has the rear plate (bottom right of window) is covered by the rear wiper. The front plate (top passenger side) cannot be seen from the outside due to the dark blue tinting.
I'm hesitant to get external plates and wear them next to the license plate (does it look faggy?) because they may get stolen. Cannot think of any other way of displaying them without being pulled over constantly and being dealt fines. The back plate isn't really an issue since i can just move it to the left side but the front plate can't really be moved anywhere else without hindering my sight

If I were you I would look into external plates for the front. It doesn't look 'faggy,' but even so, i'd rather look faggy than be dealt fines for 4 years.

Kinda off topic but anyone know a decently priced + reputable driving school?

I'll probably go with RACV, but am open to other suggestions...

As for the plates, maybe get the tint removed in that small section so the plates can go on the windows?

Surely someone you know knows someone who knows someone who knows a driving instructor?

I've had a google sesh and founds some.  :P

Need to find money first though haha.

What if you get brackets for the plates that can be screwed into the same holes as the number plates?

Or better yet, just get magnetic ones.  :)

I'm not sure if you're allowed to use other state's plates in Vic. And magnetic ones fall off?

Yeah, but I don't want to learn off them.  They will be annoying.  And if I crash, there will be yelling!

They will have Victorian ones as well I am sure.  And I thought magnets were strong.  :S

Probably worth taking a visit to AutoBahn or SuperCheapAuto.  I am sure you're not the first person to run into this problem and they would have to have some kind of solution.

It's not that hard, if the tint is covering your P-plates then move them a little lower? I don't know I must be missing something.

I have these cool plates where they just stick magically, with no suction and they're not magnetic either. They're reallly thin and feel silky LOL. Know what I mean?

Supercheapauto is like my favourite place... it has EVERYTHING. From seat covers to steering wheels to numberplate anti-theft protectors!

Yeah, but I don't want to learn off them.  They will be annoying.  And if I crash, there will be yelling!

I feel you

Little tip - before you put the suction thingies on, spit on them. Mine used to fall off constantly, but since I did that I've never had that problem again.

As for how I 'wear' them, they're both in the very top right corner of their respective screens.

Unfortunately it's fairly unavoidable, they basically just teach you how to pass your drive test. I don't think anyone actually does 120 hours of professional driving, that would be ridiculously expensive.

Btw does anyone know if L platers can take passengers? I always thought you could but my dads friend said its not allowed.
And is there a maximum speed L platers can drive? I thought it was like 80 or something but I see Ls on the freeway driving 100..

L platers can take on passengers.

And there's no maximum speed limit for L platers in Victoria (this is not the case interstate, but if you're not moving there or not getting your licence there, then you don't need to worry about that).

Just think of it this way. L's is the same as a full license with someone who has a full license in the passenger seat. There is no restrictions on vehicles with the power to weight ratio bs P's have (so you can drive the most powerful car known to man, dumb yeah?), number of passengers or speed limit. I don't think it's safe to drive above 130 as most tyres are not created to withstand that speed without significant damage and/or risk.

I don't think there are 130+ zones. Highest I've ever seen is 110 on rural highways

There are some remote roads which are UNLIMITED.  8-)

NSW has really crazy/stupid laws (speed limits, your P/L plates have to be outside the car for some reason). They aren't quite as strict as ours, but they are much stupider.

I've heard that holiday traffic gets held up because of learners who are restricted to 80.. That would be so frustrating.

And I think it's funny that they can't do 110 until they get their full licence when we can do it on the first day of our Ls. xD
