Hi,
Just wondering who here has braces? I am wondering what is the approximate cost?
Thanks
-
I have braces.
Ehh I guess 5grand?
Do you have private health insurance? MBF etc.
-
Nope, but i heard it can only refund like 800 about? Is it worth it overall to get it beforehand?

Correct. You barely get any money back at all...I don't understand what you mean to get braces beforehand? Beforehand what? If you need braces, get them...health insurance barely helps.
-
In excess of 5k IIRC.

Like just get health insurance then get braces straight after

Damn thats pretty pricey, is that like complete treatment until removal or just the application of braces?

Complete treatment. They have payment plans that are like $150 per month. There is also a lump sum payment at some point, and health insurance pays a certain amount (not much though) if you have it.

Yeah, $5,000 for 20 minutes of work..
Orthodontist's rake it in
If you need braces desperately theres no use getting private insurance as they usually have a 12 month waiting period for expensive procedures like that.
I had to get my wisdom teeth out and thats what prompted my family to get private health insurance[2 month waiting period for that procedure], You're looking for 'extra's cover' by the way which covers dental, optical, physiotherapy etc.
I spent literally a whole week looking for the best company and you can't go wrong with PeopleCare. For the cheapest price, they offered the highest % of refund (75-80%) whereas most lower-class companies only do 20-50%. Think you can get around 2.1k off braces last time I checked. And one payment will cover your whole family too
-
Interesting, what are waiting periods anyway? Is it like you got to wait a certain time then get the job done or you can get the job done and just have to wait that period before claiming the money back?
-
u can get braces at the royal dental hospital in melbourne which is public...but i think u have to wait really long and perhaps they only accept the really severe cases...not sure.. and i think u have to have a health care card...and even then i think they still charge like 2k..
not sure ... i think i might be getting braces >.< and the dentist said (im so getting a second opinion) to get jaw surgery where they break ur jaw and reallign it...and my jaw isnt even that bad i dont even have problem with chewing or anything...just to get two stupid baby teeth out and perhaps pulling the back teeth forward if thats possible...or else ill have to get have to screw in a tooth through my gum =(
how much is a one side brace like just for bottom teeth?

omg, i have two baby tooth that will have to be removed, might have to get braces or false teeth :S

or jaw surgery (cut jaw in half) + dental implant (screw metal through the gum roots) + braces (pull teeth at weird angles)
naa just kidding lolz
-
hey to the people who have/had braces
how was it the procedure? did it hurt? what was the reason for you needing tooth correction? did you do it privately or public?

The procedure itself does not hurt. It is the after-effect. The teeth are very very very very very sore, and you certainly cannot bite hence soft foods. My lower teeth were not aligned correctly and I have some jaw problem? [ Elastics will be used later on in the procedure ]. Privately.
-
hmmm hows the whole cleaning procedure? does it take forever?
i was just searching on the internet and apparently theres this machine an oral irrigator that you can use instead of flossing...
yeah i have some jaw problem too.
and if i get braces i wonder if they will have to take my wisdom teeth out even though they aren't causing me problems or impacted that much
anyway ill see how the consultation goes...

Cleaning procedure? As in before they put on the braces? They just pick all the small particles off with some sharp instrument and also they might grind your teeth with a circular saw if they're sharp. Then they have this super-smelly sticky glue they put on your teeth, then attach the brackets and there going to be there till the day you get them off. Then the wire obviously which is then held in by the colour band you choose. Each time you go, well...most times you go you get the wire tightened and/or new wire [ thicker ], and the after-effect returns [ sore for a couple of days ].
Hahaha I used to research it a lot too before I got them but it really isn't that bad [ besides the first week ]. After that it virtually becomes a part of you and you don't realise its there...[until you go back for tightening :P]
-
haha ok i see
i mean after u have braces on...the whole flossing, brushing.thats when i read about this 'oral irrigation' machine...although it prob wont be that different to when u normally do those things
first week will be hell!
but yeah will see what they say...havent even gone yet

Oh...um...you just brush like normal. Lol I don't do anything special nor have I been told to.
-

Have to wait for that long to have the procedure done if you want to claim it. It's to stop people taking out health insurance for a specific procedure then dropping it straight after.
-
Oh...um...you just brush like normal. Lol I don't do anything special nor have I been told to.
when I got braces i altered my brushing techniques from a constant circular motion to random. I think this helped get rid of the food particles which were sticking to the braces. you'll notice when you get your braces that it will be easier for you to have tartar build up and generally just develop poor oral hygiene more quickly. they also recommend for you to brush after every meal but i never did this nor do I think it to be completely necessary thing to do.

Correct. I did brush my teeth after each meal and very quickly grew tired of it...:P

LOL yeah thats why i just rinsed my mouth out after! ;)
Man they are so pricey. Health Insurance doesn't do shit. But i guess if it has to be done than it has to be done.

I had braces back in 05/06.
Never had too much pain, were easy to keep clean.
So grateful that my parents forked out the money, haha.
It's the best when you get them off. You can't stop running your tongue over your teeth. SO NICE.
Also, you suddenly have this fantastic looking smile that gets all the chicks.
1.Braces
2.$5000
3.Pain
4.?? ??
5.PROFIT

I had braces a while back too. And zomgSEAN is right, taking them off is the best feeling ever LOL. Your teeth feel really small and smooth!
-
I had braces 2 years ago but I really needed them since I had the tooth between the front and canine behind another tooth, so yes, when I opened my mouth people could see a tooth behind a tooth
It was pretty painful for me considering I had pretty bad teeth - I even had to take pain killers at school :D
I also needed a spring inserted to force my front tooth and canine to push apart in order to pull that tooth forward as well
OH THE PAIN.
but taking them off was amazing - fresh slimy feeling. mmmmmmmmmmhmmmm....
-
you visit the ortho or general dent?
-
I went to an ortho, when I had braces.
They specialise in your teeth and jaws, as I'm led to believe.
-
Definitely ortho for braces.
-
they might grind your teeth with a circular saw if they're sharp.
Lol I don't think that's the tool they use... ;)

Mine were 6500 plus an operation in a couple of years which is worth another 6500 = 13000.
But I am an abnormal case as I have a genetically missing tooth which must be inserted.

yeah same i have missing teeth...hoping it can be corrected with braces otherwise have to get implants
-
I had mine in 2001 till around 2005. I had to realign my jaw at first which took about 1.5 years. Then had braces for about 2 years then retainers :P Now my teeth enamel is starting to wear off, possibly because of the braces :(

Implants suck because you're not allowed to have them until you are 21 which means like six years of retainer which is just darned annoying.
I am sick of smiling with my mouth closed at parties for photos just because I want to drink and party at the same time and it requires a lack of plastic in the mouth.
-
I had mine for 4800. Great treatment!
