;D
Well i tutor little kiddies like primary level and i wonder if it is okay to tell them to "shut up" when their annoying? or is this a rude word?
i rmbr when i was in primary school saying "shut up" was considered a bad word....but that was back in the day.
i just wanna know if its okay. ::)
-
It's not necessarily rude, but it's probably a bit harsh when used against primary school kids. I'd opt for "be quiet" as a substitute.
-
I think it's pretty harsh but if you use a cute super friendly "I'm only joking, but SERIOUSLY" tone it should be fine.
-
yeh i remember when i was a kid, shut up was a rude word and if you said it you had to sit on the naughty chair at lunch
but i think things are changing......films that are rated G still have people saying 'shut up'
but in all honesty, i wouldnt tell children/primary school kids to 'shut up'
-
Yeah I think it is just shocking (literal sense of the word) and might scare them a bit - like, "oh no, I did wrong." They might not be able to sleep at night is all.

lol. back in primaary when a kid said shut up the class would sorta stare at you and whisper omg she said a bad word.
well okay then.
i dun wanna make little kiddies cry and pee in their pants. --"

All I remember my primary school teachers used to go "SSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHH" or raise their arms up until the entire class notice. Sometimes we never do, busy chatting the times of our lives.

Shut up is two words.

T____T thanks guysss

maybe just go with the occassional 'shhhhh' it always works. If your related, I would threaten to kill them, that is all.
-
lol ill be horrified if a tutor/teacher said shutup to me
yeah like the one above "SHHH.." would do ;O well if i were you ill just be like SHUSH! LOL
OR you can try this idea which i spontaneously came up with! Tell them that if you're quiet i will give you a tick on my list and whoever has the most ticks will get a prize at the end of each month! LOL brillant much XP

oh and you dont want kids to come home and say shut up to their parents lool or else you'll make a parent very unhappy!
-
tsk tsk trueness
-
I say keep on using it. Kids would be hearing a lot of it when they hit middle school. Plus, kids really do need to shut up.
-
Glare. It always scares little people into doing the right thing.
I wouldn't say shut up is a rude word... but most children aren't supposed to say it so it could be perceived as being rude. And then they might just not like you. Which you may or may not want to achieve. ;D
-
Shut up is two words.
Awww I wanted to be the first person to say that :(
-
IMHO it's pretty rude. When you think of what you're actually saying when you say shut up, it's pretty hurtful and some people get really upset.
-
Who knows maybe kids may even comprehend the alternate meaning of shut up! 'You won 500 bucks, no way, shut up!'
-
Hmm well I think it's something that can be taken without offense between friends and siblings, but I wouldn't say "shut up" to a little kid unless they were an exceptional brat, and I would never tell my parents to shut up. Different situations call for different sets of vocabulary; you don't speak to your teachers in the same language you use to chat with your friends, and you don't throw around verbal abuse with your parents in the same way you do with siblings and cousins.
If you're tutoring these kids, it's best to stick to "please be quiet", or just give them the silent treatment until they stop talking.
-
I think you'd want to be a nice role model to the young ones and so saying 'shut up' wouldn't really fit.
So maybe the 'Shhh..' or 'Can you please be quiet..' will do.
-
^ Shut up can be one word 'SHUDDUP!' xD
I had a couple of teachers who got angry and said this. It can be used rudely...
-
You can also just tell em to shut up and if they get cross say you were singing this, btw i hate this crew: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRzMtlZjXpU

range from prep to 5 or so.
well deciphering the word shut up is like...
shut up= close up ..er that doesnt really work but u get the point.
kids these days know the F-word and say the F-word all the time.
I see it with my own eyes .
-
^ haha my 13 yr old cousin loves using the "F-word" as much as she can on facebook
its rather terrible :(
-
Dude I saw a grade 1 tell another grade one to "suck (his) balls" the other day. Shut up is fine.

it seems as though the younger generations are adopting bad behaviours at younger ages.... when i was in grade 1, anyone who heard that would have been 'Whhhooooaaaaa!!!! Im telling on you (to get brownie points :P)'

^+1 :P

It shows how the younger generation is a lot more different these days.
It used to be a bit of a "wow" but nowadays it isn't.
Either way it might reflect negatively on you if another teacher or parent walks in at a primary level.
-
Just look cross.
Looks mean a lot :)
