I have a DELL Vostro 1510 which I find very good.
The best for year 12 would be the MacBook Pro though.

That's a personal preference -->

I found it really fast and also light, easy to carry around and reading off the screen (which one would have to do a lot in year 12) is a lot easier and less tiring.

MacBook Pro is the best notebook for ANYONE! I'm so getting an apple laptop once I get a decent job.

For now I'm pretty stoked with my iPad.

MBPs are very good for students. What are you going to be using it for? It could be kinda expensive if you don't really need a particularly powerful one. Especially with the Christmas sales there are some decent study laptops for $600 or so

Asus have some nice, sleek design laptops, from experience they are very reliable. Toshiba are very good as well, we've got a laptop that's like 7-8 years old with like 2.6ghz pentnium 4 and 512mb ram which still works perfectly fine.
Im not too sure with Macs tho but from what i gather they seem to be very good laptops for students - specifically students who study arts/media

Well if you're looking for something cheap and solid, Officeworks or JB are probably a decent bet. No need to go to a specialized store.

Get something like this (that seems to be a pretty damn good deal actually, someone tell me if I missed something there...the graphics card is way above what I'd expect in a budget notebook)

Crickey! That's a pretty good deal. Altho from the picture it looks like the laptop would be quite thick and possibly heavy...

+1 That is a nice laptop. Very surprised at the low price. Would definitely run most games.

Oh the graphics card isn't that strong, it won't run many modern games but it's solid enough to play recent ones

Doesn't have a physical keyboard so it's not ideal for notetaking and such. iPads are described more to be 'media consumption' machines rather than media production.

Virtual keyboards << physical keyboards

iPad is not a great idea for notetaking, get a proper tablet if you want to do that

I dont think tablets are that good... My bro got one for our school laptop programme, and one of the most reoccuring problems is the screen cracking. I dont know whether it's just the laptop model they have or if it's a common problem with al tablets, but id say that you're better off with a normal laptop. Plus tablets are quite expensive.

Nope, iPads suck. And BTW, I wouldn't buy one now, a new one is expected to be released in Jan/Feb.

Yeah, I want to know!

Also, everyone gets laptops for VCE/Uni etc. Most of us are getting our parents to buy them too... What reasons can you give to your parents to persuade them into buying a laptop :D ?

As a rough rule, you can multiply the dual core by 2 and the quad core by 4 to get the "overall" power. That's very rough, there are several things it doesn't take into account but if you're just want a general comparison it's close enough.

My old laptop was a core 2 duo 2.5GHZ, which is a pretty decent CPU.

imo anything > core 2 duo is good enough for work/sufring the net/low quality games

Don't get a MBP please. Espec if you're a tehc noob and your used to Windows it will take you FOREVER to get used to it. They are heavily overpriced for the low specs they offer.
If you can go by 11:55PM tonight you can pick up this CRAZY notebook:

Here are locations, closest one is Essendon :)

If you'd rather more HD space and less RAM: https://www.mln.com.au/product/?itemID=1065&typeID=

But I'd suggest the first one simply because you can get external HDs for cheap. ($49 for 1TB today!!)

So gogogo, you only got till 11:55 :P

Just give them a call and try and persuade them to hold it for you at the same price. "Otherwise, I'll buy from somewhere else".
