Title: The Good Rap/Hip Hop Thread (including underground rap)
Post by: burbs on January 07, 2011, 02:42:12 pm
Usually I'm an indie rock/alternative hardcore fan (Radiohead, The Strokes, Pixies, Clap your Hands Say Yeah etc.) but I hold a place in my heart for good rap.
To me good rap requires a good use of the English language/rhetoric, humour/story telling or fucking sick lines that make you go 'aw shiiiiiiet' and give you unexplainable boners.
Eminem, Weezy, Yeezy and Jay-z are great mainstream examples and LOS or Madvillain 'underground' versions.
Discuss this genre here, no haters.
Starting topic: who is the best rapper alive?

My favourite rappers/hip-hop artists are Eminem, Jay-Z and 50 Cent. Although my all time fav was 2Pac (but he's not alive). My fav songs include 8 Miles, California Love, Changes, and Encore/Curtains Down.
Don't mind rap, but R&B/soul and linkin park style rock is more my type.

The best rapper alive? Most definitely Mos Def, especially with his collaboration with Talib Kweli. His flow is simply unmatchable and his lyrical content, honest and pure. The only way to tell how good a rapper is, is simply by checking out his freestyle, the way Hip-Hop was to be heard.
Mos Def http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_LQiuQ1xIBM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmqXKbxDoJ0
Eminem is kinda eh. Don't get me wrong, I love his first album as well as his demo but he just went downhill from there. Currently, he is only living in the shadow of his former self. My favourite tracks: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-BEEIfn2M0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEV-VHaJ0_g
Lately, I've been listening to a fuckload of Sage Francis. Best political rapper around IMO, blows Immortal Technique out of the water. A Healthy Distrust is definitely one of my most recommended albums.
Now it's all about freestyle. Here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imwTKVxV658&feature=related RIP Eyedea. The best. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_qMbzfF31k http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40MA0pl7Oa0&feature=related
Glad you brought up Madvillain. MF Doom has one of the most unique flow I've ever seen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRHyBwNtkLA

Jamie T, Mos Def, Jurrasic 5. I'm not a big fan of late 90s early 2000s era american rap (eminem, Snoop Dog, Dr Dre) HOWEVER the up in smoke tour will never be topped.
At the risk of being lauged out of AN... Anyone into Ausie hip hop? Downsyde, The Hoods, Bliss n Eso, The Herd, TZU, Seth Sentry? They're good and local which means you don't have to wait 3 years for Jay-Z to tour some time... and then pay 500 bucks for a ticket.

Swedish House Mafia, Far East Movement, Nelly, Taio Cruz
You can tell my taste in rap isn't that black, haha.

I find Aussie Hip Hop somewhat mediocre. They don't really have the same intensity, flow and rhythm of their American/French/British/Canadian counterparts. Considering that we are quite new to the scene, hip-hop here is still trying to define their sound. However, one thing I notice they do well is laid back stuff a la Seth Sentry.

ture, but i find it easier to relate to. i.e. refferences to the bronx and compton I don't realy have anything to do with. But aussie house parties, melb. city and brusnwick actualy relate to me. so I like it more. Just a matter of taste though, and a lot of aussie hip hop artists are kina... ameturish.

How's everyone doing? Been infactuated by the Lil B Cloud Rap spin off such as ASAPRocky lately. Not sure whether to continue going down this hipster path or return to what I've been digging before.

Clams Casino has the best production on LiveLoveA$ap which improved the mixtape heaps. Did the songs Palace, Bass, Wassup, Leaf and Demons. Rest of the songs were alright I guess
Any Death Grips fans up in this bitch?

Man, it's been 2 years since Guru's death. 2010 was a horrible year for hip hop.

not a huge fan of Aesop so I probably won't check that out but I'm intrigued by the Nas one. He's been on a dry run since practically Illmatic so it seems like a bad idea to go for this. But hey, I could be wrong.
Good call on SS. Quite possibly the only aussie rapper I find bearable.

Oh my, where do I start. Tupac, Biggie Smalls, Ice Cube, Eminem, Eazy E, Snoop Dogg, The Game, Dr.Dre.
But I highly recommend you guys go and listen to a guy called 'Immortal Technique' his raps are amazing and are mostly about politics and the issues of the world. Not your usual 'thug life' stuff.

I've listened to Immortal Technique - I have a couple of his albums. I don't like him a lot nowdays his songs are way too political for my liking and contain a lot of conspiracy theories which I disagree with. But I will concede that he is a great rapper - some songs such as "Dance With the Devil" and "You Never Know" go very deep and tell amazing stories.
BTW Guys, KingOfTheDot a Canadian rap battle league (one of the biggest at the moment) is going to host World Domination 3 this year. So far the line-up of the rappers battling is really good. 360, Manaz and Anecdote are all competiting.

Immortal's best songs are his non-political ones so this
Linkin park are one of my all time favourite bands!
I have literally listened to Minutes to midnight 100 times....in one week (not sure if possible thought...lol)

2 Pac is definitely the king, no doubt. Excellent rapping skills and flow but his lyrics are actually real deep and intelligent too. I know all rap tells a different story (see snoop) but the one 2pac tells is deep as hell.
The guy who raps from linkin park (Mike Shinoda) set up fort minor and i reckon they are bloody excellent, lot of depth as well, nothing can rival 2pac but i think they're more similar to him than most people. It gets a bit pop-song-ish in some of their tracks though but thats how the market is today if you want to sell a record and get airplay. If you haven't heart fort minor or only heard remember thje name, seriously hit em up and check out cigarettes or kenji .
Tech N9ne and Hopsin have some amazing skills, composition and flow but it aint nearly deep enough, i think hopsin at a shot at that in ill mind 5 though. Hopsin just recently finished touring down under as well.
Taking any suggestions for good deep stuff (assume ive heard nothing)

Yes! mike shinoda was awesome in fort minor!!!!
luckily enough he still came back to linkin park!
And regarding rap, no one can beat 2pac and biggie

2pac and biggie are pretty overrated imo, mostly hyped up by people that care abou their deaths more than their actual material. Never cared much for pac but i'd admit that biggie is fun as hell and really enjoyable

personally i like till i collapse (rip nate dogg) the way i am, esp first verse hail mary killuminati ether my melody remember the name
for some reason, i think if you can construct a really great record, that's more impressive than good freestyle skills. ofc they involve quite different skills - see canibus
i know lil wayne cops a lot of criticism but i still like him. i think hip hop has evolved from its roots, and thats just part of music. i predict that the way drake is heading, he will have a lot of emulators soon. specifically, his mix of singing and rapping, altho i think the most impressive song with this mixture is 2pac's 'keep ya head up'

I guess I'll stop being a prick and keep this thread alive by helping out.
A lot of the older stuff, circa 90s or the golden age of hip hop, tend to have a lot of stuff from the era such as black empowerment, life on the streets etc. I don't really know what constitutes deep so I'll try and give some reccs I think fit it. Obviously I can't name them all and there are probably a fair few I miss out purely because I'm not familiar though might be up your alley (De La Soul, Del, The Pharcyde, Digable Planets, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Eric B & Rakim)
Black Star (made by Mos Def and Talib Kweli that alo produced some really cool solo stuff) A Tribe Called Quest - Low End Theory and Midnight Marauders are considered really good albums Gang Starr I guess Moment of Truth was one of the forefronts of the 'conscious' hip hop genre. Slick Rick Souls of Mischief 93' Till Infinity is a really laid back fun album which I guess is also socially conscious. Part of the Hieroglyphics crew featuring Del tha Funkee Homosapien who is quite loved but I'm not familiar. The Roots - Before becoming a stage band for Jimmy Fallon, they wrote some really cool stuff. Things Fall Apart is probably their best acclaimed album Wu Tang Clan Probably not what you're looking for but a personal favourite and probably one of the best known groups in the genre.
There are some newer stuff, being more contemporary, which are more accessible. Maybe I should have went this route first
Shad Also one of my favourite tracks and he writes some great contemporary stuff Sage Francis Writes some incredible material on politics that are more nuanced and less preachy than Immortal Tehnique. Some of his friends on Rhymesayers such as Atmosphere, Brother Ali, Aesop Rock and Eyedea write incredible stuff as well and make rounds on scribble jam and other battle rap circuits Eyedea (Rip) & Abilities Probably not for everyone but a lot of talent went into writing this IllogicFrom wiki: His style has been described as having "a classically metered flow"[4] with "deep lyrics and poetic verses."[5] The song is off of Unforseen Shadows, his first album I think MF DOOM I don't really rank artists but if I had to point to a gold standard in writing, this guy takes the cake. Also influenced a fair few rappers with his style. Flow is dry as hell so it might take a while to get into. Discography is somewhat of a mixed bag due to the amount of stuff he has put out. Madvillain and Danger Doom collab albums, as well as his solo Operation: Doomsday and Mm.. Food Scroobius Pip Took a really interesting direction with spoken word
Will write more when I hafe time
