It has been just so devastating seeing the news coverage about this time of crisis for Queensland.. Premier Anna Bligh has been doing an exceptional job, I must say, her compassionate, calm and reassuring presence really does help. She has continued to give the nation what it wants, and that's facts and information. PM Julia Gillard, on the other hand, whilst I really want to say something good about her approach at the moment, I just cannot.
Here's hoping Queensland can recover from this mess soon.

yeah its very tragic and i wanted to go to visit brisbane in 1 or 2 weeks...might just be stuck at goldcoast
alot of destruction and the people who applied for queensland might not get their offers for a few days time until the electrical power comes back on

There is a charity cruise in Victoria to help raise money for the victims of the Queensland floods.

PM Julia Gillard, on the other hand, whilst I really want to say something good about her approach at the moment, I just cannot.
Here's hoping Queensland can recover from this mess soon.
+1, Premier Anna Bligh is actually helping out with sandbagging, etc. Brumby did next to nothing during the bush-fires... Gillard's role seems to be reciting memorised and un-emotional speeches and nodding in the background while Bligh gives here support and sympathies. Really hope they can recover quickly.

If you're into tennis, the pre-Australian Open "Rally for Relief" charity match is this Sunday at Rod Laver Arena. It should be somewhat similar to last year's "Hit for Haiti" one.
Tennis superstars Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Kim Clijsters, Sam Stosur, and friends will gather on Sunday afternoon in Melbourne for a special exhibition to raise money for the victims of Australia's flood disaster.
Tickets are $20:

I can't buy it online because I don't have a debit/credit card so I'm going to the venue to get them. The event says either 'Melb Park Box office' OR 'Fed Square Box office'. I've been to Fed Square many times before but I never knew there's a box office. Where is it, may I ask?
Yes, I am a geography noob with no good sense of direction. I'm dying to get those tickets! :D

Unfortunately for those who've missed out tickets for GA arena seating's sold out now. Word gets around so quick! They've just put out $10 ground pass tickets where you can watch in Garden Square on a big screen.
Also, I have no idea where the Fed Square box office is. If you're still intending on looking for it, maybe venture into ACMI and ask around or somewhere haha.

Hmmm power's been cut off in some parts, so I'd take at stab at probably? Yet on the news they've been reporting that people are able to contact family/friends through 'social networking sites such as Facebook' - so I guess ... they might have access.

Some of the photos are quite shocking to see how bad it has effected people.
The one that shines through though is their spirit and determination to beat this and become stronger as a result of how this event has changed their state. It will be a lengthy process to get it back to the way it once was but I am sure the state and its people will be much better prepared for the next one along with much stronger mentally along with now likely having a new network of people they have met allowing them to find help and ask for assistance if they need it.
Now the floods are hitting Victoria fairly bad too, I guess all local sport matches will be called off tonight and with most next week in doubt even though there is less rain forecast. Its just that this rain has been actual rain so the ground underneath which is normally dry and allows the top surface to dry quicket will be actually wet so will take a week or two for all areas such as sporting grounds and some roads to be back to a 'safe' state. Is that correct?

What is Julia Gillard supposed to be doing? Realistically, she can't do much more than offer her condolences, do you want her to have a song and dance of the whole thing? Firstly, this is not the time to be making political points. Secondly, if the PM were male and giving an unemotional speech, would you think anything of it?

I actually think that last question is really interesting. To be honest, I don't think they would. Howard did very little in such times and during the bush-fires, I actually don't remember seeing much of Rudd...
But Anna Bligh is doing an excellent job, redefining qld leadership (and only a few months ago she looked like a goner).

Do you guys know where I can donate quality goods to charities? I don't want to give it to a salvo store where it'll get sold for like $5, as in I want to actually give these goods knowing they go to actual victims in need.
