Bored Aussie would be the most convenient I imagine. Used to play there but I've stopped for quite a while. Wouldn't mind jumping back on for a VN in-house if you guys are having one though. Shotgun TrueTears' team though.

VivaTequila on BA. /whois will say that I haven't logged on in ages, and I haven't because of exams. After schoolies when I move into a sharehouse, I'd love to scrim with you guys.

Wow I'm touched guys, taking them as compliments :D

I haven't played DotA in ages because friends have been moving to LoL, but I hate it so I'll be reverting back as soon as I move outta home. When I do, I'll join the VN scrims for sure :D

You've probably all played with me because when I did, I often hosted.

I can't believe you guys remember me considering I haven't logged on BA in what I guess would be like 4 months!

What are your igns? I probably will recognize you as well :)

edit: Does anybody want to play Melee Games? Or failing that, Civ Wars? Those and DotA are the three that I mainly enjoy playing.

hey Viva, when did u start dota? i think I've seen you around back when I still played, ever heard of clan aTi/M4sK/PIG/LaM on BA? How about the usernames Rainmaker, blackshatan?
Title: Re: Dota
Post by: VivaTequila on December 19, 2011, 12:31:19 am
Rainmaker is familiar for public games, and isn't blackshatan a mod or someone really respected on the server?

Umm I'm virtually unknown in the competitive scene in BA. I only ever play pubs, but I was previously a very skilled player. I just didn't devote enough time to the game to play scrims. Now I'm nowhere near as good.

A lot of people seem to know me, and people have been randomly welcoming me back to BA even though I have no idea who they are. I hosted nightly for about 6 months, mostly AP and APEM games.

The name is probably familiar because I was online and hosting a lot, and I ended up subbing a few times for, and playing as a sub with, CrazyOldMaurice in comp play, but that would be <10games total.

Other than that, I'm an old face in pubs. I think I've played it for 4.5 yr now.

Just a question, but what do you guys find so awesome about DotA, HoN, LoL, etc.?

I played a few times during yr11 english, but I seriously didn't find it to be that great... Maybe I need to play more? Is it really that fun?

btw, I'm not a "hater", just curious :)

Hardest game to learn. Once you know how, you can play it forever.

Why I like it: Every game is unique. It requires skill. It requires teamwork.

Just keep playing. Don't give up. It takes ages to learn but its so fun when you know how to play. You really need friends to guide you but just check out forums and read guides. I remember in Year 7, the first time I played DotA I would go on the forums and found out how to play each hero. I wrote down on a piece of paper the skill build and item build of each hero and then I promised myself that I would play a game using every single hero. 95 days later (I played a hero a day and back then there were only 95 heroes), I can now play DotA.

And one last tip: If the title name says 'NOOBS ONLY', it's definetely not 'NOOBS ONLY' ;)

Learn from your mistakes. Don't be afraid to die. Think about why you died and how you could have avoided it.

You know how many enemies and allies are on the field. Keep tabs on everyone, be where you need to be. If it's night time and you can't see 4 enemies on the minimap, maybe it's time to be cautious.

Know when and how to use skills. If vary the timing of something by a few seconds, will it make the situation better or worse?

Know your own ability and power. Whether you're able to chase down an enemy safely, or survive an attack for long enough to counter. Whether you can save an ally under attack without feeding them another kill. Whether you should keep trying to escape someone chasing you, or turn around and make a last stand so that reinforcements can avenge you.

The basic skills such as skill builds, item builds, last hitting, warding and juking will come quickly with attention. The decision making skills are much harder to refine.

I bought a new rig with dota 2 specs in mind like 3 months ago and I still haven't score a key. When will the game become public D:

Supposedly Valve credit the game not being public to the fact that their servers can't handle the immense bulk of players that want to play the game...

What would 1.6 million do in development? I mean, really. You need publicity for a game too.
Title: Re: Dota
Post by: Deank on February 23, 2012, 10:34:24 am
With PAX being the largest convention in Seattle at the rough time of the International (set for the labour day weekend, Aug 31 - Sep 2) alot of us are putting that at the top of our guess list. Is there a short list of places you are looking at?

That is a good guess, but nothing is finalized just yet.

The last international we saw a prize pool of 1.6 million dollars, are you looking to create the same prize pool?

At least.

As the rumours fly about the opening of the BETA, and the release of DOTA2, speaking as a man that runs on 'Valve Time' would you have a time frame for both these events? And do you plan them to be linked into things such as the International?

The gating factor on getting everyone playing Dota 2 right now is mostly about us having enough server capacity to support the Dota audience. Our release date is not tied to The International, but we do have a goal of everyone being able to view the matches live inside the game.

and dota 2 is a masssive community... People are atm willing to do anything for a beta key even give up their virginity i totally would if i didnt have a key and yes im a virgin..
Well the point is i think they are adding a prize pool for more of the competitive aspect from games such as lol . which has a huge pricepool

And if you don't do well in VCE for whatever reason, your passion for games may lessen a tad. Sure, many of my friends went hardcore after VCE (they all did reasonably well), so it is still an option. It's just me. I'll be gaming less and working on an epic GPA/WAM :D

Installing DoTA for the first time ever, I've got some friends from school that want me to play.

On a scale of 1-10, how steep is the learning curve?

It'll take you at least 1 month to fully understand items etc. That is, to be able to purchase items within a heartbeat // know all the items that make up specific scrolls etc.

I very well might, or I may soon. But I can't check now I'm about to go. Drop me a message asking for one so next time I log onto AN I remember to check. If I don't have one now, next round of invites I'll remember to shoot you one.

Quite the opposite, Dota is the original game. League of Legends was made based on Dota with a couple of changes. Also I can download Dota 2 but I didn't get an email for the key. It means I haven't got a key yet right? I don't want to waste time  downloading it if I can't play it yet.

Steam was probably like... hmmm, DotA 2? Is this really a good idea? Should we fund this project?

I can so see some guy being put in charge of making DotA 2 run successfully and being kept on an extremely tight leash and he'd have been sweating over making Dota a success so that his job would be sweet

and just a few months later it's in Closed Beta and it's their number 4 popular game.

They'd be kicking themselves for not doing it sooner I reckon :P

Forgive my ignorance, but doesn't closed beta usually come before open beta? I think it is in closed beta now and soon open beta will be released, before the game gets finally launched?

Is Dirge, Meepo and Lanaya too much to ask for? Far out, they're never going to get released because they're so unpopular.

I just really want dirge!!...

I also am curious as to how they are going to release Meepo because his default hero select skills are F1, F2, F3, and F4... but I can now bind my courier to F2 (and I do!) so it'll be interesting to see what kind of intuitive option they come with to deal with it.

Is anyone finding that their ingame experience playing Dota to Dota 2 has changed drastically?

Pretty much all heroes, I can last hit about 50% more accurately with. If not more.

Some carries who I used to love playing, I now suck with. And some, I'm discovering are incredibly OP (namely Lycan).

Anyone else finding wierd quirks which they like/dislike about Dota 2 which shouldn't technically be any different from the first version?

I haven't picked a hero in my 50+ games (pubs) of dota 2 so far, and probably only picked less than 5 times over 2-3 years of playing dota. (pubs as well)

Not saying I'm good though but randoming helps keeps the game interesting, and you learn the pros and cons of each and every hero, which would help improve your game level  ;D downside is that you don't master one hero in particular so your timings and etc. might not be as good. A little like the jack of all trades, master of none.

Dota 2 not having my heroes released has forced me to play others. I now know how to carry as a carry, not as a support :P

I normally (actually scratch that, always) play either Dirge (new>old but both were great), Meepo, or Visage (new, old, and old old). These guys would probably take up about 70-80% of my gameplay, I rarely ever play anything else, cuz these guys are so OP and people just have no idea how to play against them when they're played well.

And above: You've never played an -SD game accidentally? Never played a scrim? Because randoming in an in-house game would most likely be disastrous, save for the fact that they're seldom -AP/-AR games. Take the above guys post with a pinch of salt, he clearly only plays pubs. Pick whatever you want, when you want.

This is the single best ever game of dota i have ever seen.
http://www.dotacommentaries.com/index.php/commentaries/12898/

Some pubs i've played have been nearly as exciting and intense, but to see that type of momentum shifts in a pros game is insane.

if you have an hour spare watch that game. It is the most intense game ever between 2 international heavyweights. (D1)
haha I saw it when Doc first casted it ages ago. But Lumi is just as fucking awesome.

Fucking EPIC game, I miss the good ol MYM days, now it's just all chinese domination.

Makes it even better that its a F4F game, reminds me of the epic MCiTy days when they actually beat MYM :D

That turn around was insane. Clip over here for anyone who wants to watch.

Quote from reddit explaining what's actually going on for those who find the battle a bit too hectic.
Quote from: joker10101
The lead hero from the river is Naga Siren, her Song of the Siren allows her whole team to setup a NASTY team combo combined with Dark Seer's Vacuum while the enemy team sleeps. A near guaranteed team wipe if done properly, but the big black-purple dude named Engima had an item that gives magic immunity, he activated it the moment he came out of sleep and used Black Hole, which is a gamebreaking channeling AOE disable. Note the tentacles coming from the ground: that's Tidehunter's Ravage, which failed to disable the Enigma and was used a second time by a hero named Rubick that can steal spells. A near instant reverse team wipe, which is unheard of.

Just started playing a few days ago, quite interesting. Totally different to any type of strategy game I've played before (Starcraft, Warhammer, etc)
So far, I've played Omniknight, Lich, Axe, Dazzle and Jakiro - the first two are probably my favourites for now.

Last hitting is so hard #firstworldproblems

Professional gaming seems a bit silly to me.

In what sense?
You should see the Starcraft scene in Korea - craaazy
Gaming is becoming more and more popular of a hobby these days - gamers are no longer looked on as the nerdy type of people who can't say more than three words to another person. Naturally, eSports will flourish more as time goes by.

I did watch one Dota game, NaVi vs IG from the International 2012, the one that ended in like 30 minutes. Didn't get a thing the casters said.

I did watch one Dota game, NaVi vs IG from the International 2012, the one that ended in like 30 minutes. Didn't get a thing the casters said.

If you're having problem with last hitting, try using drow or viper, if not anti mage with quelling blade.

I find ranged Heroes harder to last hit than melee Heroes. Just not at that level where I can time the attack time and distance to target yet. Had fun with Axe today, got a few Hero kills even! I need to learn which items go with which hero, and how to use them. Some guy raged at me for not having Blink Dagger :(

Anti-mage looks fun to last hit with, he seems to have a good attack speed from what I've seen.
He's a Carry though, isn't he? I don't think a new player like me should take that much responsibility.

No you horrible person, come play Dota with me D:
Or Starcraft, I rarely see you on anymore.

I've nearly become Asian. I just need to watch anime, learn how to use chop-sticks, and enjoy sushi. Assimilation successful.

New player can certainly carry the game, easily, just gotta last hit. The trick with ranged heroes is that you can move closer to the creep and last hit if you can't judge the distance properly, so your basically last hitting like a melee. If you liked axe, try centaur or spirit breaker, they are naturally tanky and can gank really well.

Get with the times, DOTA 2 is now free so naturally you should move onto that. Unless you're just a sentimentalist and love the traditional Warcraft 3 dota. (all my friends do this too)

I have dota 2, but I don't like it. You can't improve perfection.

I had a game of it the other day and I had absolutely no problems with the legacy keys after having not touched it for at least a year. It was awesome!

A cool website for you to check out - DOTABUFF.

It summarises your stats after looking through your game history and posts up your records.

You can see lots of cool functions, for instance, who is a good counter to their picks.

If you wanted to pick a hero to counter lifestealer, for instance, just search the hero here and you can see that Drow, Riki, Templar, Ursa, and Omniknight are the best heroes to pick against him for the current week.

My records and stats

Let's post our finest up!

Lion is a good support, but I really like Dark Seer.

I find that, so long as the person playing him has an IQ of >80, he is impossible to fuck up. Four castables, amazing jungler, great ricer if he needs to be.\

Shell the carry.
Surge the carry. (half your shit is done with two clicks)
Put down your ulti wall. (can be done to varying degrees of effectiveness)
Vacuum tactfully. (again, this can make or break a fight)

But still, if you at least cast your stuff, 80% of the time you will help. A lot. He's a great support and really gets unrecognized as an introductory Dota 2 hero.

@Hutchoo: that was my first game with Medusa in Dota 2 xD I had a lucky game.

(yes, I do enjoy playing Medusa if you're wondering about my game history)

i have played every visage game on this guys account, and he's only recently (last day or so) started playing again. it's a mixed account, but most of the games are mine. i've never had so much fun playing dota than in the last year.
