Title: SMF 2.0!
Post by: DavidB3ck on July 16, 2011, 03:00:59 pm
Just a quick announcement for members and staff...
We are now upgraded to the newest version of SMF, and have merged all the states into a single forum. Right now the forum is still under construction, but will be taken out of maintenance mode soon. Check back often! The next few days will be kind of rocky as we get all the kinks ironed out and all the settings tweaked to our liking. Expect some changes. We do apologize for the inconvenience, but we believe this was a necessary step in our evolution. This was a giant upgrade (and massive undertaking) and the forum software architecture has changed slightly. Some of the data... Like avatars and post attachments for instance... Could not be transferred over. Depending on demand... I will code something to port attachments (>2gb worth) over if need be. However, I will be leaving the old forums up for the time being at http://www.atarnotes.com/agora/. They are in maintenance mode (read-only), but it will give anyone interested an opportunity to acquire anything (like avatars and attachments) that wasn't transferred to the new forum.

Plans (pre and post public opening):

All boards marked [new] were manually added to guide in the organization and consolidation of the forum. Boards which are not tagged were directly imported and will soon be disappearing into the new boards. Once this is complete, the [new] tags will disappear. For the moment, this does not apply to VCE. Since we already have a large established VCE community, we left the boards intact to aid in the transition. However, they too will eventually end up looking like the other state forums. Boards will be grouped, consolidated, and arranged all pretty-like. :)

The main page of the forum has replaced the national forum, and anything that applies nationally and has no point being in every state forum will be moved there. DuplicationFTL.

As SMF serves as the backbone for the entire site, other parts of the site will need some work to become compliant. Shouldn't be too many glitches with this, but this is a warning just in case. As always, let us know if anything breaks/is broken.

The current theme will be modified to better suit the aesthetics of the site.

Settings... Permissions... Etc...

Hopefully all these things will be completed during this week.
Thank you for bearing with us. <3

PS: If you're logged into the old and new forums at the same time, you can expect to see things like 'session verification failed' and session timeouts. If it becomes troublesome... Log out of one of them. Or clear yo' cookies.

I really just want everybody to know how hard David has worked on this. At least 20-30 hours in the last few days.

It is a herculean task, and we ask for your patience while we do this. The forum will be back up ASAP :)

P.S. C'arn the mighty sainters!

Both of those posts were made before we realised none of you could see them :P

But we've now done pretty much everything detailed above in that post. If you notice any bugs, please chuck them here and we'll get on them ASAP. :)

OH also, I still need to make HSC, WACE and SACE look like VCE but they'll be trimmed down like us too (it's just that their being like that didn't affect reopening the site so I'll do those ASAP). Let me know what you think of the new layout and structure. All feedback welcome, because this was just our best guess at what would work in combining all states into one massive forum. We think we've really managed to make it a trimmed down forum that still has easy access to all the boards you guys use

I fixed this by clearing the cookies, restarting my browser and logging in again. I kept getting the error before restarting my browser and it wouldn't let me log in again.

Also modified posts aren't saving using the quick edit tool.

Great job enwobbles and David.  Forum looks fantastic!

I'm guessing all links are gonna need to be fixed in threads such as the uni subject reviews threads, english sample pieces threads etc?

No chance of a redirect?

Yeah that's an issue.

Copy the code to microsoft word and then "Find and Replace" wherever you get vce.atarnotes with atarnotes and it should fix :S

After a quick browse
-Vic mods need our permissions back please.  :p
-"Show new replies to your posts." is only showing up national forum threads
-Latest posts which appear at the bottom of the forum do not come up in the state forums.
-A couple of minor cosmetic things I noticed... the "Home" "Forum" "Contact Us" etc. buttons appear square in the forums, bust have curved edges when in the notes or hompage section.  Also, the Albino Design link links to nowhere in particular.  Not sure if it has always been like that and the site designer is still waiting to get their website up but yeah.

Aesthetics are still being worked on.
Forum totals just need to be recounted.
I'll work on fixing broken links.
Working on getting LaTeX back up.
Only chat option we have on SMF 2.0 atm. The restore button is kinda cool though.
Still tweaking settings.
Read the PS in the announcement.

It would seem that only admins have access to old AN while it's in maintenance mode.

No matter what I click on, I just get this:

Further, you can't see the respect count here either.
You have to go to each thread the user posted in to see each post's respect count.

We've lost the most online ever tally down to the new forum, from what was it 610, 910? to 66. :(

I tried to search for the thread related to this, but alas...

Search functionality returns database error. (search in forum/board, etc)

I think it was about 610 though, you're right. It was most definitely in the 600s.

Edit: Someone can merge my posts into a big, giant one if they cbf...

New posts do not give highlights properly.

e.g.

ATAR Notes: Forum (forum) » State Forums (category) » VCE (state board) » General VCE & Victorian Education (section board) » General VCE Discussion (content board)

New post in a thread in a contents board - thread bears "new" icon.
Section board shows content board with highlighted icon
State board shows section board with highlighted icon, content board text is bolded.
Forum view shows State board with highlighted icon, Section board text is not highlighted.

(basically, one too many nested levels. If everything is raised, causes cluttering.)

I assume it's admin. And yeh, I suggest raising it. Honestly, text generally isn't the problem - it's large images, and we've already got rules defined in the CoC regarding what's acceptable.

You can move it back to general national discussion temporarily...the thread exists if you have the direct link to it, it's just not shown on the forum page

Yeah I still have the direct link but trying to figure out where exactly it is located.

Anyone reading - it's here;
Carbon Tax

EDIT:
Found it, it's at the last page of the news/politics section

Speaking of which, a moved thread will get moved to the bottom of a section rather than being placed into it's chronologically correct spot

Seems to be because it's too big and hence is being shrunk (new feature?). I personally think we can raise the max resolution a tiny bit higher if this is something that has been set ourselves. A bar like that really isn't that intrusive. Vertical height of images is the main thing to be wary of IMO.

Very minor... but the countdown thing in my sig is in low resolution (fuzzy) until you click on it and it becomes normal again.

Seems to be because it's too big and hence is being shrunk (new feature?). I personally think we can raise the max resolution a tiny bit higher if this is something that has been set ourselves. A bar like that really isn't that intrusive. Vertical height of images is the main thing to be wary of IMO.

I wasn't going to mention this until the major things have been flashed out but since it has been mentioned I'd really love this to change so I can make a proper signature. Would be great if the 300 character limit was removed too, if possible.

Max width thing. Can be changed. Probably should... Seeing as most banners are 468 pixels wide.

Yeah I still have the direct link but trying to figure out where exactly it is located.

Anyone reading - it's here;
Carbon Tax

EDIT:
Found it, it's at the last page of the news/politics section

Speaking of which, a moved thread will get moved to the bottom of a section rather than being placed into it's chronologically correct spot

Yeah. Assumed SMF sorted chronologically... They do... But by using the id of the last post instead of the actual time the post was made. Normally not an issue, since the ids will be sequential. The port may have screwed that up. Going to either hack SMF into sorting by time, or renumber all the posts in the DB by time at some point later. It's 5am... Time for sleep. <3

Pretty easy to manage it all manually at this stage :P

For those on Google Chrome.

Does anyone else sometimes click upvote/downvote/show voters and it just doesn't work, but most of the time it does?

It is really sporadic for me.  I have deleted all cookies/cache. :S

Some more things I have found.  A few minor and a few more important.
-Each of the state forums still has a Water Cooler, UMAT, Buy/Sell and University boards.  These will need to be deleted, because they already exist in the national forum...preferably before people start posting in them and then boards will need to be merged, creating more work.
-(Minor) Latex Button in Post Reply is showing up as a broken image.  (this is in chrome, but not in firefox.  still happens after clearing cookies/cache)
-(Minor)  Everytime I have logged in, it never works at the top (says password error) and I can only get in from the dedicated log in page.
-You cannot bold only part of a link.  The bold code needs to go on the outside of the link to work.  :/

Also, the thing I was referring to before about the buttons being square and not curved appears to be chrome specific.

I... Don't know anything about LaTeX. It was an SMF mod. If it's an issue, I can maybe look into getting mathTex on the server, and build a custom BBC set for it. Not sure how hard/doable it would be yet.

Correct you are. I cannot think of a single occurrence where any queries were duplicated... And anyway the unique ID should stop that kinda thing. Perhaps SMF's automated repair functions did it while trying to fix something else. Not sure how much I should be concerned with the data integrity in the database.... There's over 500k messages, so I believe everything is there. Whether or not it's actually in the forum is sort of hard to check. There's 4 years worth of data. I assume it should be... And the way I ported everything over from the 5 databases there shouldn't have been any conflicts. At this point, we can either lose all the new posts on this forum and start over and try again... Or attempt to fix things. However, I'm not sure if SMF screwed it up or if I did. "Last post" is my main concern. Duplicated posts, not such a big deal, though missing posts is, though I'm not sure if anything is really missing or if it's still in the database or where it wound up.

Respect works as a decimal system, so after you upvote someone they go from 4.2 to 4.4 and so on. This only happens once you vote someone up/down.

In the middle the decimal stopped showing, but yes it is back now :P

The new SMF attachment system isn't entirely compatible with the old one... Of course I can code something to port them over. But honestly, I'm not sure if it's worth the effort or storage space to house 2gb of old attachments, since I'm not entirely sure what they consist of. The backup forum isn't going to be there forever... So... Opinions?

In all honesty, non-copyright, uploaded material should not be hard to download and transfer over manually. The bulk of uploads previously were by users putting up copyrighted trial exams, which is obviously not welcome anymore on our servers.

from my knowledge, most of the attachments in the maths/science are godly... collected over the years of FSN/VN. Also alot of the ppl who download them are lurkers and new members, and most of them don't know how to navigate the forum that well either.

also new latex cant code "\implies" it turns out to look like

when are we getting the old latex back? this new one is really bad... can't code alot of other stuff too

i realised this and started using \Rightarrow instead: still really annoying though, especially all the old posts that will be screwed up :/

yup, i don't think the latex installed atm is the standard latex typeset, alot of the conventional commands are broken.

although you can now type 1500 characters in the tutoring ad thing, but it still doesn't show, i typed up something around 1000 characters but it still only shows the first 250.

Ah. Good point. I should probably remember to change things in the database too and not just the code. >>

It's an SMF mod. Seems to be the only one too. I can work on installing true LaTeX support... But atm I have a fairly long todo list.

I'll just publically put this here that LaTeX will not be revisited until the enormous pile of crap to get through right now is finished. Sit tight, guys, and thanks for the understanding on this.

You lost all the attachments post-upgrade..?

I just replicated it again:

[Was a screen shot showing respect bug.]

Edit: Also... how do I mark all posts as read? I was hunting because I remember you already explained it to Nina, but I can't seem to find it...

Just need to link old IDs to new IDs. Should have it done in a few.

I don't know if this is just me but the read unread topics since your last visit is broken, I've tried refreshing cookies and waited for another topic to be posted to see if it works but it still says nothing, is anyone else having the same problem? Maybe because of some update or something you guys have changed?

Is it just me or are the "last post" sections on the VCE, HSC, WACE, SACE sub-forums broken?

I've still got

Yeh I've got the same thing, and I can't mark all messages as read, some just stay with the "new" bubble next to them. My read your posts since your last visit is broken as mentioned above.

Yeah they've been broken since the upgrade. Mao pointed it out and David is trying to fix it apparently, but I guess he's having no luck

SMF sorts by highest post ID instead of by the time it was posted. Generally, it makes sense because the newest message will have the highest ID. However, when we imported 5 databases into one... The IDs were still relative to each other but some were no longer relative to the time posted. I've reordered the IDs by post time, but it hasn't helped. Could be the topic IDs are out of order. I'll have to look into how SMF calculates the last post. I've posted on the SMF community forum, but haven't gotten any replies yet.

Why are there two ANU boards?

Australian National University
Australian National University

The older threads are the same in both boards, but the newer ones are different.

That was my doing, it just uses an externally hosted MathTeX. You could compile one on the server and use the server's version of LaTeX if that works better.

We're going to have LaTeX native on our new server we're moving to soon, so we'll probably sort it then. Won't be for a bit though.

The server that the mod pointed to crashed. So I switched it back to yours for now. <3

Except mine just redirects to http://www.forkosh.dreamhost.com/mathtex.cgi as it was putting too much load / using too much bandwidth on my server. This was back when I had an AMD Sempron 2400+ with a small amount of bandwidth as a server. Got a Core 2 Duo now, but the redirect is still there as I couldn't be bothered installing LaTeX and compiling anything :P.

Lol. Whatever. I'll get it on the server soon.
