Title: Steps 2) and 3) of ATARNotes.com expansion: Tutoring + Books
Post by: enwiabe on July 24, 2011, 02:02:33 pm
We’ve added not one but TWO new sections to ATARNotes and they’re huge!

David is the best web dev ever. Seriously, a talented individual who poured uncountable hours into these projects and we are LUCKY to have him on board! So much so that when our lazy ass layout designer took too long with the layouts HE WENT AND LEARNED THE CSS TO DO IT HIMSELF. But on that note, we will get somebody in to touch up the books layout and possibly tutoring layout but I think he did pretty friggen’ well on his first attempt!

The first is the one you’ve all been waiting for, the tutor listing and review. Please check it out and add your service to the list because we’re CLOSING the advertising board in one week!

When you add your services, the little “score” box next to the subjects you list is for you to put what score you got. That won’t show up until you e-mail [email protected] with proof of your scores (in the form of a scanned statement of results).

The second section is a major book listing and review! Just like tutoring you can browse and review VCE books and study guides. You can rate them as well, so you'll be able to sort books by ratings and see which study guides everyone likes etc.

Hats off to NINA for adding nearly 800 books herself. Manually. I’m surprised she hasn’t gone insane yet! Now, here’s the important thing for us about books: buy your books from our affiliates. We’re affiliated with The Nile, Booktopia and Book Depository (their affiliate system is on the fritz atm so we can’t give you guys a link to that yet unfortunately). All of our books have links to our affiliates to buy them from the websites and if you get your  books from them, they’ll give us a cut! You were going to buy those books anyway, so everybody wins. Please leave all your feedback in this thread, because these are brand new sections and we’ll be relying on your feedback to make them as awesome as possible!

Jordan does deserve some credit. He did do a lot of the design for tutoring... At least the most important parts... And it is his design system overall. Also, we prefer The Nile if all else (prices, etc) is equal. <3

I saw this half an hour ago and was going to post, but didn't want to ruin the surprise :P

Good work, looks impressive.

nb, there's also an "add a company" button which you might want to do manually rather than have companies add it themselves?

Nope, we can't be responsible for adding every company, so we're encouraging people to add their own services. We'll check them for validity etc.

On that note, please PM me if there are any errors you notice (e.g. if I listed something as 3/4 when it's a 1/2 book). Also if a book you need isn't on there :) the booklists I used were by no means comprehensive.

Oh right I thought he was talking about individuals. Sorry, Russ! Yeah I'm going to go through and add all the big names and after we'll have a spiel in blue up top about e-mailing me if you want your company added.

No, I think that's the 2005-2009 version. The yellow one is the 2nd edition and I have added that book now, so you might want to delete your review and copy/paste it

Right I get it. Two different versions. Dlt the 2009 one - pointless.

how do I delete my review? :S

Go to the link in the Book Review section. Click on the book - you will be taken to its equivalent page on The Nile. The "The Nile" page shows a blue-coloured book and if you squint a bit, the cover says 2005-2009. I added it because it was on the booklists of two major school book suppliers. I'm not sure who will buy it - I've made it clear that it is 2005-2009 now.

Thanks for the kind words. And thanks to Dan and Nina for adding crazy amounts of books (mostly Nina :p). In fact... I think there's still a book about procrastination in there somewhere. Also, I'd like to mention... We will be having someone look over and polish and possibly fix any of my CSS mistakes.

Is the advertising board getting removed or just archived? as in, can we put links to our old ads in the new ones and will they work after next week? its just that I can't fit in everything I want to say in 250 characters :/

It'll just be archived. People who want to link to their endorsements etc. can still do so :)

The 250 character limit was absurdly low in hindsight and will be bumped up in the enxt 24 hours to 1-2,000 characters.

Just wanted to know what the sponsored ad feature entails? I assume being listed at the top of the tutoring page with a sponsored ad note next to it? Seems like it's $5 for 1000 ad views - does a view count as someone clicking on the ad, or is a view just everyone that goes on the 'Tutoring' page? Any limits to how many sponsored ads you'll allow at once? And lastly, is this feature working yet? Sorry for all the questions but I was just about to pay up for it and figured I might as well check some things before I do :P

Shinny, you basically get a promoted ad every time somebody searches for one of your subjects. So if someone were to search for English, if you have sponsored ad views yours would come up in a highlighted box. I've credited you 1,000 of these views because a) I want to try it out and b) I think that is the -very- least you deserve for your service to the community :P

Fatal errors are occurring in the tutoring section (they're database errors). I think it might be related to my manually crediting Shinny 1000 views from the DB D:

Sorry David when you wake up and see this. Until then, it's a known issue just so everyone knows it's being taken care of :P

If so, maybe write postcode underneath it to be clear?  Or maybe I am just stupid. :p

I do have a few suggestions but want to see the thoughts of others.

"Recently Reviewed" section for the Books Section so it can be seen who has been reviewing. Also if the books on the default homepage could be arranged horizontally and then vertically obviously it is more aesthetically pleasing.

Is there also a way to incorporate the costs of texts (without having to go through manually)?

Tutoring
-Variable rates. I occasionally feel a bit generous and do tutoring for a lot cheaper for holiday cram sessions/charity fundraisers/skype etc. and having a separate ad seems to clog space up quite a bit. This can be possible done as a "from x$", though I could see this getting abused perhaps =\
-Non student reviews. I personally think there is value to a review of a tutor without them actually  being a student. This could be hidden by default, but could be shown if one wanted to see these.

Most issues fixed. Still need to add variable rate... And for anyone whom buys a sponsored spot... The "max views per day" isn't in effect yet. For the time being... Maximum views per day is unlimited. Should have this done tomorrow. But yes, the sponsored ad system is functional. Also, as Taiga mentioned... Still need to do more CSSing on books.

It seems like it would be pointless to have them removed from the main list if thats what you're referring to? If their ad doesn't get shown at the top of the page they could be missed completely when someone is browsing the page they're on.

I swear I changed the limit on edit before I left. Perhaps it didn't upload. I'll fix it when I get home. Also, click on the sponsored ad views remaining thing on your listing. I'll make that a bit more prominent.

Just as a bit of feedback, I'm already down to 500 pageviews left in under a day so perhaps more page views per $5 is in order? It'd cost me approx $75/month for advertising if it keeps going at this rate. Not saying that I need to permanently have a sponsored ad, but I'm just not sure if the number should perhaps be adjusted. Up to you guys. Otherwise chances are I'd just get sponsored during peak periods.

I think we'll have the option to disable sponsored ads showing on the homepage, which is where the bulk of your ads are being viewed. That means that you can set it so that your ads will only show up when people search for your subjects.

Also, I'll recredit you 1k ads when this takes effect and we get the kinks ironed out :P

Yeah noticed with Shinny's ad that it he has credits taken out every time it comes on the homepage.

Rather than 1000 impressions, perhaps a lower amount of clicks? Or that just when someone's ad pops up  after a search? Homepage would make the deal not worth it for the customer

Yeh, I was thinking a click-based system would be more fair. Simply not showing the ad until a search is done is a bit pointless as well since many people would just scroll down the list and see what's available.

It does need some tweaking. Also keep in mind that when there are more sponsored tutors, you won't be the only one there... And the views will be divided amongst.

Should be instant. Did you order 2 lots of sponsored views? We received 2 payments from somebody with no tutoring ad. I was going to e-mail them tonight (only found out a couple of hours ago), but if that was for you, then that solves that mystery :P

On books, is this a mistake? Both are exactly the same book(s):  (page 4)

Did the physics study design get extended by a year, that same thing happened to accounting didn't it?

@Rohitpi, the system doesn't allow repeat ISBNs so they're definitely different, but I must have linked the wrong images. If you click on the books it'll take you to the equivalent The Nile page, which should provide better info on which year/syllabus/whatever it's for.

I'll have a look and fix it tomorrow when I have a computer

Can we rate tutoring companies? When I click on a number /10 it doesn't seem to appear, and therefore, I don't proceed with a submission of review. Should the number I click on appear?

Yeah. The select box was a bit too small though... So it looked a little off. Should be fine now.

Can there be a feature so that users can't submit their reviews more than once on a particular book, I tried on one book, and it seems that it is possible to submit two reviews (I didn't actually click 'submit', but I could fill out all the pros and cons, etc,).

Also, if I sort by 'ratings' (low to high or high to low), there are about 98 blank pages (after pages 1-3), I think that may need to be fixed. Probably due to the fact that only like 20-30 books have been rated so far, C'MON VN!

EDIT: This review looks a bit troll: http://www.atarnotes.com/?p=books&a=view&ISBN=9781864781274

You cannot submit more than one review per book. Try it.

Gottcha. I thought you could, seeing as though I could fill the form. Clearly not. My bad :)

Yeah that would be why. However, I'll make it so it actually only counts books that have been reviewed.

THIS IS WHY I DON'T CODE AT 2AM. I apparently need rest. I had both files open and apparently copy-pasted the code to the wrong one. All fixed. However, please don't hesitate to email me if I do something stupid again... That goes to my phone.

There are a couple of tutoring ads that are pink highlighted - what does that mean? Are they not visible to everyone, because they've got a giant "Approve" button sitting at the top and I wonder if they need moderator input?

And secondly, I was looking at tram's add and next to his score there was a "Verify?" button. I thought if I clicked it I'd be shown his emailed transcript or whatnot...I wasn't and it now says "Verified" (not that I think he's lying, but just FYI). In future I will endeavor to not push random buttons :S

Lol. Sorry. Thought Dan would've briefed you on this. :p Verify button is to verify their score after they have submitted documentation. Pink highlight means they haven't been approved yet... Only visible to staff.

I think they need to send scans of their documentation to [email protected], so only enwiabe can see it...

I think they should be able to just PM a mod though.

It's something that is open to manipulation or abuse. For example, I'm <Company/Tutor> and I see someone's given me a poor review. I pay them/threaten them/whatever to change it.

I'll only consider revisions to reviews that are PMed to me and with good reason. For example, iffets buggared up her review by not seeing one fo the questions, leaving it as 1/10 for Vincent, and I was happy to remedy that mistake.

All the VCE Biology textbooks are absent from 'Books'. Is this is a mistake, or are they just not available from the sponsor sites?

eg. Nature of Biology 1, Nature of Biology 2, Heinemann Biology 1, Heinemann Biology 1, Biozone, etc.

Just means it wasn't on the booklists of either of the two suppliers I used :P

If you could list them for me I'd really appreciate it so I can add it to the list

- Nature of Biology 1 (1/2) and 2 (3/4)
- Heinemann Biology 1 (1/2) and 2 (3/4)
- Biozone (IIRC this has a textbook and a workbook?)
- anything else? Nelson?

Done - sorry about crossing out bits of your post, it was just to keep track of what I'd added and not.

I couldn't find the ISBN for the Nature of Biology CDs though. Also there's 2012 edition of Biozone coming out soon so I've added that too
