Title: Diploma of Mathematical Sciences at UoM
Post by: tazza on August 31, 2011, 03:33:50 pm
Hi, sorry if there is a thread on this anywhere already, but I was wondering if anyone had completed the Diploma Of Mathematical Sciences at UoM, and whether they found it to be useful or interesting, or essentially worth it?

I'm considering doing it alongside an Accounting major, however as there is very little written about it online/or in their brochures I was wondering if I could get some other people's experiences :D

I haven't done it but I am considering starting it next year.

Basically, you do the *exact* equivalent of a maths major (either pure maths, applied, stats and something else - operations research?), and so you can base your thoughts of it on the BSc maths major. Also, you can either complete it alongside your degree (i.e. overload your subjects), or after it.

PM abes22 who is doing biomed and doing a pure maths major through the DipMathsSci, alternatively,  if you're commerce and maths inclined why not consider Actuarial studies?

Cos Discrete Maths & Operations Research is cooler.  But I could be biased...  :P

Thanks. Would there be any advantage of doing a Commerce/Science degree at Monash compared to a Commerce degree with the diploma in maths at Melbourne?

Well on paper, yes, because a bachelor degree is higher than a diploma. So if you go to monash you will get 2 bachelors, whereas melbourne will give you a bachelors and a diploma.

However, the melbourne degree is 6 months shorter (or 1 year shorter if you overload), so that may be an advantage. Furthermore, if you're mainly interested in commerce (as in, you probably want to go work in some accounting form or banking etc), then having an extra science degree isn't going to help you all that much, especially in comparison to an extra diploma. If you want a job like that, it would be much better to try and join commitees to try and get internships from said firms.

Good luck!
