More like a double degree.

Year 1,2 = PhB
Year 3 = PhB/MBBS
Year 4 = PhB/MBBS
Year 5-7 = MBBS

Year 5-7 = MBBS

:O And do you apply for the double degree through UAC, or do you have to apply after your first year of the PhB?

Been browsing the ANU site for quite a while now except still can't find any info on this. Can you so kindly direct us to info on this with a link please? :)

Yup, got an email from the admissions people and all -

First came into my attention when i was applying through UAC (the UAC site mentions it)

Dear Thushan,

My apologies for the delay in responding to your query – life is pretty hectic at the start of semester and I am afraid I missed your email for a little while.

As Hollie has advised you, we do have a pathway available to PhB students which links with the ANU graduate Medicine program. This an exciting opportunity that appeals to a number of our PhB students as it offers the option of the research undergraduate degree plus the graduate medicine program with a saving of one year.

Students interested in this pathway firstly apply for the PhB. If admitted to this four year degree, they can then take one or more of their Advanced Studies Courses (the research projects offered in the degree) in an area (or multiple areas) of medical research. In the 3rd and 4th year of the degree there is some overlap with the first year of the Medical School program leading to a saving of I year over the two degrees undertaken separately. However at any point students can change their mind and complete the PhB program as per normal.

Students accepted into this pathway are exempt from the GAMSAT but still need to sit an interview. Of course, if you decide to apply for admission to a medical program at another university then the requirement to sit the GAMSAT for that other institution would remain.

Please feel free to contact me again if you have any other questions. You might also find it helpful to come along to the ANU Open Day on the 27th August. I shall be attending the Open Day and would be only too pleased to talk with you about the unparalleled opportunities available to students in the PhB, including this pathway to graduate medicine.

In the meantime though, good luck with your studies this year

Kind regards,           Paula Newitt

An ATAR over 99 will pretty much guarantee you a place.

Hmm alright thanks for that. Do they put a lot of value into the application form, or is it just sort of like a final confirmation?

Hmm I don't really know... I got in based on ATAR :/ They lower it a bit if you have huge extenuating circumstances (great olympiad participation at an international level, or a hugely hugely underrepresented school), but you really need to be thinking at least 98, and definitely 99 if you haven't represented Australia internationally or had any other major obstacles/accomplishments.

I'm sure if I got an amazing ATAR like yours I'd get in without a problem haha, but lets hope that a 99.10+ and a decent application will be enough to get me through. Thank for the help, really appreciate it!

99.10 will be fine. Seriously, a 99.00 will be enough - I think the application is mostly for <99 ATARs.

from memory I believe that you can modify your application until the final closing date at no extra charge. Having said that you should do your own research first to confirm.

EZ - Can you tell us more about the PhB? It seems so different from the average undergrad degree. Not sure what it entails etc...

EZ - Can you tell us more about the PhB? It seems so different from the average undergrad degree. Not sure what it entails etc...

Ok,

So in a nutshell, the PhB is basically a super-duper charged version of a Bachelor of Arts or Science.  The differences are basically:

1. The University loves you.  You get away with all sorts of things which nobody else can do - for instance, half of my cohort jumped right into second year subjects right off the bat, and they got permission to take a lot of courses (which they didn't have the pre-requisites for) which non-PhB students got denied access to.  When people apply for exchange, they almost always seem to prioritise the PhB students, and in interviews, there's a reported difference between how they tend to treat PhB students and the rest.

2. You get access to Larry, who basically is a god of organisation.  He will help you (one-on-one) plan out your degree, teach you about the different options which are available to you, tell you what people in the past have taken, etc.  He will also help you assess your options with university life, make sure that all is well, and so forth.  Basically, he's there as a combination of a pastoral/academic mentor.

3. You're allowed to take Advanced Studies courses.  These are basically courses where YOU get to design the content.  Do you want to study Renaissance Literature?  Find someone to take an Advanced Studies course with, and it's a go.  Want to study all of Nietzsche's work in one semester, and write a 5500 word essay on it?  Go for it.  You're also allowed to adapt existing courses towards your own needs (eg. you might want to change the assessment requirements for a 3rd year subject, so that you can write a longer essay or something).  In science, this is usually more along the lines of you just doing original research: for instance, one of my friends is doing research work on Malaria at the moment, and another friend is doing a project about how superhydrophobic substances behave.  Or something.

Also there are other bits and pieces, but it's mostly stuff you pick up from experience.  It's just an amazing experience though.

Hahaha I've been successfully persuaded to consider the PhB - I just changed my UAC preferences.

Need to apply for accommodation as well. Burbs, how are you financing yours?

One of the PhB students who did the ANIP got posted in Tony Abbott's office, and ended up ghostwriting some of his speeches etc. for him.
