Does anyone have a vague idea what the cutoff is gonna be for this year???
There was a sudden increase in the umat scores required for 2010 compared to 2009 (jump from the 150s to 177).
Since this year's umat was relatively easier would this go up to high 180s???
-
Hmm...it's too hard to predict!
Last year I know people who got in with mid 80's percentile and 99.50 ATAR
Plus you have to consider that your ATAR is also going to make a difference, so you obviously need a higher UMAT if you have a lower ATAR and vice versa

Nah, UQ choose purely by UMAT, you just have to get over a certain ATAR (OP1/99) and then they rank you based on UMAT scores.
And they have the "bonus points" so if you do something like spesh you will only need ~97 ATAR...
-
Oh right, I didn't know that!
So I'm guessing that because I did extremely well on the UMAT and hopefully I do well on my ATAR as well, plus I do Specialist Maths I should be able to get a place at UQ?
That's not too bad then, so I guess if I don't get Monash or UNSW I'll always have UQ to fall back onto :D

Yeah I'm assuming you'd be guarenteed a place at UQ.
To the OP: I don't know what it'll be like this year, but I can't see the cutoff being more than 180-185.
-
i reckon the cutoff for uq for umat will be around 90 :)
-
Hmm I got like 165 total or something on umat... got ripped by section two :(
I'm going for 98 atar + i do specialist maths.. would bump me to 'OP1'. Is it worth me applying to UQ? or should I just save my money??

It would depend on how passionate you are to do medicine. The people who REALLY want to do it, will go anywhere to do it - no matter the cost.

What does 165 translate to in terms of percentiles?

I am applying to everywhere in NSW, TAS , VIC (only monash zzzzz) and SA.
I REALLY want it, and will basically do anything - sell everything I own to pay for rent, etc etc.
I would just prefer to save the money and time if I am out of the range which UQ accepts.

73rd percentile :( I really wanted to get around 80-85.

Apparently Monash implemented the 50 - 50 - 50 rule... that is gonna bump the cutoff in other states...
-
Nup, not true. Monash stipulates a minimum of 150 total, but it's not 50-50-50. It can be 25-75-50 for instance.

I got 54/42/71
I thought Monash had a higher cut off...?
btw total is 167 not 165 :P underestimated before, only actually checked then

That 'rule' is basically for the 99.95-ers. If you get 99.95 and get less than 150, then they won't take you. Their UMAT cut-off for everyone else is much higher than 150.
But I have also heard about the 50-50-50 for Monash this year...

I disagree, some options just aren't possible for some people and I don't think it says anything about their desire to study medicine. They also shouldn't feel less deserving because they don't want to travel etc.

Hmmmm considering that the lowest i heard getting into uq last year was 85, i think you might not make it....but defs try for james cook and hopefully you'll ace the interviews :)

I think I might just go biomed at melb, better opportunity right now

Oh really? Hmm, from whom?

thats good lol, wipes out some of those 100% that got like 40 in section2,

The grad entry pathway ain't no walk in the path either. Everyone seems to be going for the BBiomed/MD route at Melb and the cut offs for both appear to be going up.
Unless you get a 99.90+, you are going to struggle to get in anywhere that uses UMAT. Still apply definitely, but don't expect much, and if you get an offer, then you have to consider it. I got 55 overall (52/43/69 - 73rd%ile) on UMAT 2010 and nowhere gave me an interview.
Your best chance is to go to JCU in Townsville or Griffith Gold Coast. JCU is interview/ATAR only, whilst Griffith was ATAR only (99.65 was the cut off for last year). But then you have to consider whether or not the move is worth it when you could stay here for an FFP at UMelb if your ATAR is 99+.
You have the whole summer to stress over such choices, I assure you...

hey man, would you have any idea what a competitive application to UNSW would need, given a UMAt of 92? I think I can probably get 99.75, is that enoguh? I think I am good at interviews, so im busting a gut to get one at monash, hopefully I can bump up my enter to 99.9, which will take a bit of luck as well.
92, is one of those umat scores that is low enough to have me quite worried.

I think you should be fine. With 99.85 I think I needed 57 for an interview and had a 55, so you'd need to be pretty unlucky.

I also heard Monash was 50-50-50 this year....
Oh really? Hmm, from whom?
y12 friend who goes to MHS from his careers counsellor.

Careers counsellors are often quite clueless. I thought we've had plenty of people already disprove the 50-50-50 rule and say that it's just minimum 150? Minimum 150 never made sense to me though because that just essentially means minimum of 50 overall score, which is clearly way lower than what's required to get an interview anyway.

the 150 minimum i think applies to 99.95'ers
it means they still have to have that minimum score to be offered an interview
-
Theoretically, it applies to everyone. Given the demand, it applies to only 99.95ers.
-
Ah right, forgot about that ATAR stream...
-
sooooooooo many mhs guys with good scores...
*drool* congrats!!!

Definately agree, I'm very reluctant to go interstate because financially I know that I won't be able to afford it, plus I have other plans of starting up a side business with my family and others here in Melbourne which I don't want to scrap :)
-
Btw, if a career's counsellor said something, don't believe it, it's said by a career's counsellor....!! Often they have little knowledge of what actually happens and often provide misleading information :)
If you want to know, just call up Monash :P although im 90% sure they won't say anything :P

Just btw, this counsellor was judging interviews for monash med last year, and has a son (and also maybe a daughter) doing med, so I think she knows what she is on about

I hope this is true! Might lower the cutoffs a bit... :)

LOL phew! if that's the case and I get an interview, I would have JUST scraped in! (got 51 in s2)

a couple of good guesses ay?
-
yeah ahaaha
-
if that 50-50-50 thing is true, apparently a MHS dude will miss out after getting 100 percentile.
apparently he got like 105 on section 1 then bombed sectioni 2 lol.
dicks on him. he can probably consider himself unfortunate!
poor bastard.
-
Man, if they do take that 50-50-50 rule, I would have just scraped in with a 50 in Section 2! D:
But I guess it DOES eliminate a lot of the competition ;D

Got in contact with head of admissions for medicine to find out for you guys. (Monash)
Hello Devraj,
Thank you for your email asking us for clarification about the minimum UMAT. Our minimum ATAR (sic?) to be considered for the MBBS in 2012 is indeed 150 (the unweighted sum of the three section scores), however, we haven't specified a minimum in each section.
Kind regards,
Karyn Asher
Executive Officer
MBBS Admissions
Hope that helps, and Illuminati, you're safe :P
-
Good news for Illuminati then :) He'll be pleased :)
Although a 150 ATAR is gonna be tough :P
-
LOL Illuminati has a one-way ticket to med!
-
So am I the only one thinking about interviews now guys? :S
-
Everyone put in their applications? :)

Hey, blame VZ for that info! :P

The cut-off will rise sharply this year.
Why?
Because in previous years, most students have not been aware of the UQ bonus points scheme from other states but more and more are becoming aware now, that's the reason for last year's massive jump and this year's coming massive jump.
-
No offence to anyone, but the UQ bonus points scheme is the most unfair crock of bullshit because...
a) Your ATAR already gets boosted because Specialist Maths and LOTE have ridiculously high scaling so these candidates are effectively invited to double dip and
b) I don't see how completing a LOTE or Specialist Maths makes you a better candidate for studying medicine
/end rant
-
Specialist maths scaling is not ridiculous anymore...it's deflating...hope it goes over 50 at all this year
-

We need more Thushans to take specialist, improving the overall cohort of the subject and hence, boosting the scaling of specialist to where it once was... :D

I disagree, you need more people doing it who will push up the mean but who still will not be better than us, that means that we will get the advantage of a higher study score :P
So you need more people who just aren't as smart as us doing it but will do better than average ;P
