Title: [MERGED] Random exam questions
Post by: HarveyD on November 02, 2011, 01:54:29 pm
May be a silly question but....
Does VCAA care if we use two pen colours?
i.e.
If i write my essay in black
and then edit it with blue?

It won't affect scanning or anything?

Post by: Greatness on November 02, 2011, 01:58:09 pm
I dont think it will, it may appear lighter on the screen if they scan it but that's about it. It should be fine! :)

I wanted to use black for context and blue for lang analysis and text response (would there be anything wrong with this)?? -- sorry weird question but alas these are the last minute exam worries!

i dont undertstand, why dont you all just use the same colour throughout and save yourself from these unnecessary issues?

Because you have a 4pen and want to balance the colour usage :)

I doubt it's a big deal anyway, but it definitely doesn't matter if you write different sections in a specific colour since different examiners mark different sections
Title: Re: Combining two pen colours (Blue and Black)
Post by: costa94 on November 02, 2011, 02:14:25 pm
why write in a four pen
enjoy having your hand die because you have to press so hard to get it to write decently, or otherwise its so faint and looks like shit

get inky uniballs you twats
glides across the paper, no stress on the hand

No problems with the VCAA supervisors?
Anyone else planning to do it?

Anyway, my friend wrote one of his essays in 4 different colours on the trial exam. He got his highest mark from that essay.

It is a sign people.

Could someone pleasetell me whether we have to fill out our student number in both letters and numbers on all three task books? This seems as though it will take at least 3 minutes and just waste time!

Erghhh.. Good question. I know that the supervisors will make us fill it out straight after reading time.... So yes, we will be wasting precious time. But i think i will just leave it to the end. And if they tell me off for filling it in then i will have a bitch about it lol.

Title: Re: Using watches as stopwatches

Are you sure we're allowed a digital watch? If I recall correctly they specifically stated (in the exam navigator) that you aren't allowed to bring in a digital watch/watch that has stopwatch capabilities?

Not 100% sure on this, however.

and it opens frontiers to cheat(you can write quotes on the gum, and inflate it in times of need)

Quote
Wearing of a watch of any type during an examination is not permitted. All watches must be removed and placed at the top of the student’s table/desk, where they can be seen clearly and easily by Supervisors.

Where there is any doubt about the functions of any watch displayed, Supervisors are authorised to remove the watch from the  table/desk and retain it in their care for the duration of the examination.

Stopwatches or watches with special functions such as an alarm or stopwatch are not permitted in the examination room.

I'm guessing that you won't be able to bring in a digital watch. You'll have to use a regular watch and keep track of time manually.

hmm still quite vague
"functions" refer to stop watch? :S

DOOOOOOOOOOONTT

Here's what happened last year.
Methods exam 2, decided to pop a piece of watermelon flavoured 5 gum in my mouth.
Got nervous during exam, started chewing like crazy....
Next thing you know, the gum, i kid you not, turns into liquid, so i basically had this massive amount of saliva mixed with gum in my mouth.
There were no bins nearby, and i didnt want to swallow it (thats what she said), so i basically had this pool of liquid sitting in my mouth for like the last 20 mins of the exam...

eh, during the end of my english practice exam we were supposed to fill in the booklets with the details as practice when I left til the end and I just had the title of my context to write down when time was up and my english teacher snapped up my booklet before I could finish writing it down to give the "real atmosphere" of the exam

or perhaps she was just being way too anal - but point taken - just get the info down asap.
Title: Re: Exam procedure help
Post by: Andiio on November 02, 2011, 03:17:36 pm
Would we be allowed to write the details before the exam starts? As in, just before reading time when the examiners are checking everything? I remember this happened in midyears - I saw other people filling in their details so I just followed suit.
Title: Re: Combining two pen colours (Blue and Black)
Post by: acinod on November 02, 2011, 03:18:20 pm
I think we can ONLY use black or blue pen.

Personally I'm writing the title and subheadings for my context piece in Black and everything else in Blue.

I wouldn't risk waiting until the end. Perhaps ask an examiner prior to/during reading time about what is and isn't acceptable. If they tell you that you can do it at the end, just do that.

This bird. Outside my study. Has been hooting ALL day, EVERYDAY, while I've been studying for the past week.

So what's everyone else up to in these last few hours before the exam?

I'm not really killing birds, I'm actually reading essays and looking over my notes.
No writing today. Hands must rest.

In the past two hours we have had a lot of these topics. Merged them into one. Please keep all of this stuff here so that the English board isn't inundated with questions about all of this - topics about texts etc. are getting pushed down.

And in general: if you have to ask if you can do it, you probably can't.

EDIT: I know it's confusing to read back but if you have a question just repost it in this thread. You should all be studying/relaxing anyway.

Okay, I have a question related to text response essays

I wrote this in one of my essays and was curious as to whether or not it was wrong:

'As viewers we are only offered an insight into...'

OR is it better to write

'Viewers are only offered an insight into...'

In my mind the first option appears wrong because of the use of 'we', but it somehow keeps on slipping its way into my essays.

It's been ebbing away in the back of my mind for a while now.

Yeah avoid the use of personal pronouns which include you int he piece, you're better off considering yourself as a non-agent in the whole essay author-audience relationship situation.
