Pencils are allowed to be used (in preference over pens), right?

Yep, just make sure that it's dark and doesn't smudge, so something like an HB would be good

Related to this - am I right in thinking, therefore, that the papers are not scanned (unlike chem/physics)?

Not as far as i know, otherwise they'd have that funny margin

My teacher is one and she says she doesnt mind as long as you use a hb or something that is dark. But it will piss them off if it is really light.

exam 1 is scanned to pick up the grey lead, exam 2 is scanned with a special version of a nuormal scanner and saves all the exams as files before being sent off to exam markin pplz so there can be none lost
