Title: Your opinions on "bro" and "wing"?
Post by: ReganM on November 16, 2011, 07:55:22 pm
As in, "I am WINGING the EL exam".
lolol. Is it an example of teen slang? is it new? is it from america?

Also, "bro". I've noticed it being used a lot amonst my asian friends (I come from a suburb full of asians, LOL), and it has kind of replaced "mate", is it an example of azn kinship or what? ):

umm, wouldn't it be a complete meaning shift rather than a conversion. O_O

It'd be a conversion from a noun to a verb, like Google to "I'll go google that".

But wing..? Ohhh, are you talking about wing --> winging it?

I was referring to wing (birds wing) --> wing (..what would you say wing means.. haha)

ReganM, I think they mean "wing" (bird wing=noun) to "wing" (doing something without preparation=verb). That means it undergoes conversion (as well as a shift in meaning). Remember conversion does not involve adding affixes!

i think bro is outdated, however if you use broskies, trueskies, cuteskies, they would be classiified as contemporary slang terms!

basically meaning people will do more of what they do best.

also... "Wing" isn't really teenspeak.  It's been documented since late 19th century lol.

Every age group uses it.
