Post by: yesyes123 on December 08, 2011, 06:43:31 pm

Yes. And the quality of the presentation of the textbook in general can affect me as well.

it does, i'm generally really anal about the display of textbooks which is why i almost always get first hand ones.

i'm also very fussy about the layout. particularly, if a section of a subtopic gets mixed with a different aspect of the course, i would get frustrated. case in point - cambridge essentials business management.

I don't mind when there are notes in the margin. It doesn't really put me off. Rather, it helps me as I get to see how someone else thinks. What I do find distracting is when there are random doodles that are unrelated to the subject matter all peppered throughout the piece. That's just annoying.

Both my Biology and Psychology textbooks were given to me by my friends, and to be honest, I actually find the second-hand "feel" of the books very comforting, and less intimidating. As long as there isn't writing or anything obscuring the text, it doesn't make a negative difference to me.

As long as it is not a mess!  If there's highlighting all over the joint then I wouldn't mind since they don't help me anyways.
Tell you what does peev me off though.  Buying exams or booklets with answers still written in pencil!

No. I study better when things are quite messy

I can't stand highlighting in textbooks. In my second hand A+ Biol Notes for unit 3 there was a page of ~200 words where, no joke, all but 4 of those were highlighted in the SAME COLOUR. Doesn't that make the highlighting redundant?!?! Similar things occurred on just about every page.

A few words here and there I can handle and often find beneficial.

I hate second hand books. It puts me off learning when all I see is a massive picture of a dick on the questions page.

I love second hand books.

I find that the notes in the margin are often really helpful, and I love it when someone else has already highlighted useful history quotes for me. Makes life so much easier! :D

Like frebb said, I find brand new books really intimidating. Usually if I buy new books I'll crack into them with a hightlighter/pen straightaway just to mess things up so I feel comfortable doing proper annotations later.

Lol, If your lucky like me...you can buy the second hand book which looks really new as the firsthand one for less than half price.
But srsly I hate when the book is being used by ppl for a long time.

It may put you off, but it turns me on ;D.

yes.
1) Having any writing or highlighting puts me off the book, as i am unable to completely understand every thing done it
2) Also having good quality books encourages neatness which i definitely lack
3) For this reason i generally purchase first hand books.
Never purchase a second hand book without looking through the pages!!! It's
gonna make your life a ton harder if you find distracting images / writing in random places. Try and see if any of your friends will
give you their good quality second hand books for a decent price. It's also better if
you do some research into the best textbook for you specific subject. If it's not on your booklist, it may lift your scores
up to try and purchase a second hand one.

Never gonna give you up.
Never gonna let you down.
Never gonna run around and desert you.
Never gonna make you cry.
Never gonna say goodbye.
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you. <3

My apologies for going off-topic.

A textbook shouldn't really affect the quality of your study unless it has been grossly modified, however I do understand that some people take pride in how their texts look so they can re-sell them at a later date.

Bad troll, lets get back on topic please.

Camo, is there any psychological reason which might make learning from a new textbook more appealing? (you are the psych expert! :D)
Title: Re: Do you guys think the quality of the textbook affects studying??

Well not using psychological reasoning here, more common sense. Some people are perfectionists, such as my handwriting (an error is approximately every third page) ant it is super small. I prefer my handwriting to others.

Some may be more inclined to buy new text books as it allows them to be able to start anew, highlight sections for their understanding rather than another's highlighting, etc...

Also most sensible people don't like buying second hand textbooks with crude drawings in them.

However I'm not saying its not a bad idea to check out second hand book sales. There is always the possibility that you can pick up something good. Also year elevens should ask finishing year 12's if they can buy their text books. I for one have a large number of English textbooks (thought it might help but errrrr.....), and I'm passing it on to my best mate (possibly going to be the dux of our school next year ;)) so he can get into computer science.

Any more questions, just ask.

Guys! I'm seeing this forum use the term troll far too often...
If I were to post on a cat lover forum: "hello, I recently bought a kitten and it's really annoying. I can't seem to give it away to anyone so I decided to put it to sleep by bludgeoning it with a hammer, it'll probably be better off in heaven anyway. The problem being, I couldn't bring myself to doing it. I'm looking for a better and quicker way to get this done, would asphyxiation be suitable?" That would be a troll, because you're trying to get a rise from people.

Bazza's rickroll wasn't like "OHGOSHDARNIT I thought that was good text book advice but then I found out he was just rick rollin' me   :'("

The quality of the textbook affecting study? Is this to say the quality of the layout or the quality of the content? Because if it's the layout it shouldn't really matter, "oh I hate this type font!" durp.
