Title: Memorization type of subjects ?
Post by: Em. on December 11, 2011, 05:28:17 pm
So... for next year... I intend to do ; biology , psychology and health .. Both psych and health require alot of memorisation and biology too but not as much.. But it's still alot of memorization and I'm not sure if I could handle it....

Has anyone done all of these 3 subjects in year 12 and have achieved good results?  did you find it hard to memorize information ??

also , does anyone have any tips in regards to how can one improve their memory for VCE ?

It's just all about repetition really. Perhaps try that Anki program that's been recommended by many on this forum. I tried to use it this year and eventually got lazy, but it looks like it could be a very efficient method. Just type definitions and such into there and revise them every day. I didn't do that many rote learning subjects in VCE, but Medicine is essentially a crap load of rote learning. My experience is just to write up some good notes, repeat and teach the information to others and apply the information in several different scenarios and I'll tend to remember it all.

Bio has a little bit of memorisation, I've heard psych has a lot, but I can only really talk for bio.

Psych is half memory, half application. But its rather easy, and cause its so interesting it can be really engaging. :)

With mostly all VCE subjects, you'll be required to apply the information that you've memorised. I'll have to agree that theres more to memorise for psych than biology, ( because psych is a social science while bio is a natural science) but just remember to practice answering exam type questions throughout the year. Especially since psych and bio have a midyear.

You'll be fine :) At the beginning of this year, I was also like "omg legal exam is ALL of units 3 and 4" and it is a lot, But the best tip I can give is to study for your sacs as though you were being "VCAA EXAMINED" for that area of study - this isn't just to ace your sacs for good ranking, but also because it doubles up as exam study. Don't JUST study the revision sheet your teacher gives you before a SAC...Know every dot point for that area of study inside out. It might seem annoying studying so much more than necessary for that sac but it WILL help in the long term. At the end of this year, I found it so much easier to study for Legal exam (rather than cram) because the information had been established well the first time (when I was studying for sacs) and through constant reading and explaining it to myself up to and during exam period it just STUCK.

Also in psych, you'll learn about something called "relearning" where the information you learn is never really gone as such, there are always traces of it. The more you go over your notes, the better and more long term that information will stay in your head :)

and also use mnemonics - they are SO SO helpful
